From the announcement of Tom Holland's casting as Spider-Man, comic book fans have been eager to see their friendly neighbourhood vigilante make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Captain America: Civil War. Several people who have seen the film, such as Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, have praised Holland's performance and declared him the best Spider-Man yet. With the latest trailer, audiences are now able to see Spidey in action. Towards the end of the trailer, the vigilante makes an appearance during an Iron Man and Captain America showdown.
The new Spider-Man's look is very similar to the classic Silver Age costume of the comics. Specifically, one can notice similarities to the designs by artists Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr. Sam Raimi's film trilogy depicted a costume with silver-colored webbing and large angular eye lenses. Meanwhile, the Marc Webb reboot featured an outfit that adhered closer to the comics' version, complete with web-shooters and dark sunglass lenses for the mask. This version was noticeably different with track shoes being used as boots. By contrast, the MCU Spider-Man is closer to Lee and Ditko's version, especially regarding the black webbing pattern of the suit and rounded shape of the eye lenses.
While there is no webbing under the arms, the red-and-blue color scheme is spot-on, and the mask's eyes are nearly identical to the comics' depiction. Furthermore, the lenses appear to adjust themselves, hinting at the possibilty that Tony Stark could have designed the costume and mask, thus allowing for flexibility and movement. It remains to be seen if he did help Peter with this suit or if he creates another costume for him during the course of the film.
Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to released on May 6, 2016.
