Robert Downey Jr. Recalls The Last Time He Worked With Stan Lee On CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

During Stan Lee's long, eventful life, he made several cameos in the films that were adapted from his work. One of the most popular is from Captain America: Civil War, and now RDJ discusses his scenes...

During  the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga, which consists of the first three phases (23 movies), the late Stan Lee crossed paths with Tony Stark more than once, but arguably the most memorable moment the two shared was the 'Tony Stank' scene in Captain America: Civil War.

The scene serves as a bit of much needed humor after a very tense and emotional climax between Tony and Steve, and it also saw Stan deliver one of his funniest lines to date.

During his appearance on the Howard Stern Show, Robert Downey Jr. opened up about working with the legendary Lee.

One of the last times I saw him, we were shooting Civil War. And in his cameo that day was he's, I think a UPS delivery man, and he had a great line. He goes, 'I have a package for Tony Stank.'

RDJ goes on to discuss the scene in more detail, talking about how Lee would go so far as to confuse him for Iron Man!

That was one of the last times I saw him, and the crazy thing was -- he said that on the first take, he nailed it -- then they go, 'Alright, resetting, let's do it again.' And after that, he started saying, 'I have a package for Robert, uhh...' And I said, 'Oh my god its wild, even the guy who created the character thinks of me in a moment where he's talking about the character... This is so meta. Stan Lee is forgetting who I am in this moment.

tan was my unofficial Godfather, and i think the unofficial Godfather to a lot of kids growing up. It's not an overstatement to say he helped raise me, and them.

I miss him.

See this is why I still say I was genuinely surprised at that ending of End Game. I figured it was almost a certainty that Cap's story would be "finished", but not necessarily Tony. There is perhaps no other actor in the modern era who has so gotten off on the playing of the character he was than RDJ in this series. He's reveled for years milking the interchangability of himself and Tony Stark when not on camera. He [frick]ing LOVES playing this guy. I mean he was still gonna get paid, and rightly so, when the studio's making that much money anyway it stands to reason he gets a solid chunk (especially when it's not like they knew he'd practically be a co-lead in Civil War way back in like 2010 or even 2012).
So I didn't expect him to get this level of finality, that he'd of been as fine with the idea (cause it ain't like he's had a ton of consistent success playing anyone else). I figured, okay he has a regular, physical person may "die" but they'd do a clear set up for like an AI version, as I think happened in the comics. But nope. And with how they did do it, I don't WANT that to happen now. I'm still not crazy about this notion of him being in Black Widow, I hope it's just going to be repurposed footage like in Far From Home.

@CaptCoulson - RDJ can play Tony via many plot loopholes. AI being the most obvious. So I wouldn't be surprised to see him return in some capacity.

@KungFuKoala - while certainly correct, technically he could. But actually (and not like I ain't been proven way wrong before) I genuinely do not think that will happen. At least not for a good LONG while. They want his death really to mean something for this universe.

But I also went into End Game feeling pretty confident that Thanos WOULDN'T be definitively killed, that he'd be securely "handled" and the immediate problem solved, but still be out there in the fringes for a possible like mega sized multi-villain story return 8-10 years later. Then they killed him TWICE! lol
i suppose technically a sort of possibility still exists with the multi-verse concept inevitable, but... oye

Sounds like they were working Stan Lee to the bone to the point of confusion.
