Samuel L. Jackson Isn't Happy About Nick Fury's Exclusion From CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

There was no sign of former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury in Captain America: Civil War and Glass star Samuel L. Jackson is still unhappy about it! Find his comments on that after the jump...

Samuel L. Jackson is one of Hollywood's most prolific actors and his role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe obviously stands out as quite possibly his best. However, he's been notable from his absence from a number of movies, including Captain America: Civil War

Fury not making an appearance in the movie didn't make a whole lot of sense given his history with Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Glass star has now expressed his disappointment about not being asked to return as the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director in that massive ensemble.

"There's lots of stuff you can do with him. But has he been used wisely? Yeah, except for things like Civil War. It's like, if all the Avengers are f**king fighting each other, where is their guardian? Where's that dude who comes in and goes, 'Alright, everybody go to your room. I'll be in there to talk to you in a minute.' Either he's the guy that brought them together and he's the glue, or he's not. I felt a little- I felt a way about that."

We saw very little of Fury in Avengers: Infinity War and there's no word on whether he'll have a significant role in Avengers: Endgame. For what it's worth, Jackson claims he hasn't read a script for that. "Not Avengers: Endgame, no. I generally read the scripts I’m in," he teased. "I don’t just go to my part [laughs]." There is a chance he's misleading us, of course, but we'll have to wait and see.

Do you think Fury should have been included in Captain America: Civil War? Sound off below.

@Saga - not as packed as infinity war was

I get his point, but Fury defusing the Avengers would have made for a pretty uneventful and short movie. Simply put, Fury wasnt necessary to the story they were trying to tell, and as Jackson points out himself, would try to stop them from fighting which probably would have only served to stagger the momentum of the plot moving forward unnecessarily.

@ArthurFleck - i think he's saying fury should have been there to at least try to defuse things due to his role in forming and managing the team.

@ArthurFleck - i think fury wouldn't have been able to defuse anything, but it at least makes sense for him to do something
ArthurFleck
ArthurFleck - 1/18/2019, 6:14 AM
@Origame - I dont disagree that it would make sense, but would it have added to the story? Was it essential or perhaps something that would have been left on the editing room floor anyway?

Sure it would make sense, there are tons of things that could be added to any movie that make sense in world... but it doesn't serve the story or the pacing or the narrative flow of the movie. It clearly wasn't NEEDED cuz the movie was amazing without it and didnt suffer from not having that scene added. It would have been fun fan service to throw Fury in there and give him something logical to do, but that's about it.

@ArthurFleck - You're right. It actually was necessary that he not be there to talk sense. Also since the split was programmed to happen had he been there he would have had to pick a side. This way he's neutral.
CabbageMan
CabbageMan - 1/18/2019, 8:04 AM
@ArthurFleck - I still think it would have been better having him there, he had more reason to be there than half the heroes there. It feels kind of a plot hole that he didn't do anything, they didn't even need much screentime for him. They could've had him kind of discovering something fishy, some clues of someone trying to put IM vs Cap, then... out of nowhere... Surprise Moth*f*er! Zemo stabs him on his good eye! Then at the end of the movie he appears on a hospital bed saying "Ha! I knew all along!"

@ArthurFleck - i think it could have. Give his own perspective on things. At least that'd be more than spiderman and ant man.

@CabbageMan - I mean, I get why he's not in the movie but you're actually not far off with your description of how they could've fit Fury in. Like, he could've tried to calm things down and failed, and while they were all fighting he could've been the one to expose Zemo's plan and convince Tony to go and help Steve and Bucky, only for the fighting to kick off again once Zemo showed Tony the video of Bucky killing his parents. Essentially it's the same film we already saw, just with a small Fury subplot woven in where he tries to help and ultimately fails.

But then, maybe that's why he was left out in the first place. He may have known about Bucky killing the Starks and kept out of it to keep his own hands clean. Plus, he faked his own death so getting involved with either side puts him at risk with the government so heavily involved. We know Fury is a good guy, but we also know he can be a little shady too, so it makes just as much sense for him to stay out of it.

On a personal level, I totally get the frustration. You're like the only person left out of the party.

And even on a fan level, I get it. Nick Fury is frequently the dude who connects these different characters together. He's the Kevin Bacon of the Marvel Universe.

But on a narrative level, it was obviously the right decision. If Fury was there, he'd have to take a side (or even offer a third option that could defuse the situation). And while he's not nearly the adult in the room that Jackson is making him out to be, he does carry an authority with him that would disrupt the balance between Tony and Steve as equals.

Don't know how I feel about him being Spidey's new handler, though.
CaptCoulson
CaptCoulson - 1/18/2019, 3:11 AM
@Spock0Clock - yeah I think I agree, especially when you consider that the only two main players who were left out of Civil War were done so because they were getting a whole other film of their own (and he didn't get to be in THAT, either... although admittedly it would've made even less sense to stick him in Ragnarok than of CW).

But, yep, in a more macro sense of the universe, it would've felt right, but I respect the Russos that much more for sticking to the story they were telling, most of us seem to agree it was a pretty damn good flick but at the end of the day, there indeed wouldn't have been enough of an organic reason for him. you gotta kill your darlings.
CaptCoulson
CaptCoulson - 1/18/2019, 3:14 AM
@Spock0Clock - plus after all, Jon Favreau was a huge part of this whole gigantic machine for getting it started working so well to begin with, and even HE got cut out of Infinity War lol
everyone must bow to story
CaptCoulson
CaptCoulson - 1/18/2019, 3:48 AM
@Spock0Clock - I wouldn't be surprised though if that's literally just for Far From Home. I mean, I don't think Feige ever promised we'd necessarily get an A-level Avenger assist every time (of course I'm not suggesting you were thinking that either), I think Nick Fury and Maria Hill are going to be it for this movie's Iron Man slot.
Maybe by Part 3 they'll be able to toss in Dr Strange or something (besides, I feel like I remember Feige suggesting that by the time we'd be getting the likes of Spidey 3, that late into Phase 4 (if it's not even 5 by then) that having more just 2-3 big character team ups will be more common in the MCU, not just always sticking to solo movies and the major Avengers movies)

@Spock0Clock - Fury could use any hero and it would make sense, they are pawns for his plans it's what he does,he could ask Iron Fist for a favor and it would make sense.

It’s strange to complain about not being in a film while detailing how your character would have undermined the central dramatic conflict of the plot.
MyBeard

@Chewtoy - Yeah. Since they would ultimately have to ignore what he said, it would have amounted to one scene just because.

well, given that the Russos themselves have put straight up lying their asses off on the table when it comes to these last 2 films (whereas, coy or sly with answers as they may have been in the past, they'd never outright lied about their work, hence why I completely believed that "the A4 title is not spoken in any Infinity War dialog", but now i know better) even though Jackson can be fairly blunt when talking to the press, I'll go with him still just covering for now.

At least, god, I really REALLY wanna believe that for the friggin "ending" of this whole 10 year journey, they'll include Fury to SOME degree. To not would just seem practically blasphemous at this point, especially how we've heard time and time again "the combination of these two films will bring together/tie up all the different threads that have been going all these years".

actually, wait a minute. Given that Fury's dusted in IW's post-credits scene, then alive and very much involved in Far From Home (which just so happens to be the very next Marvel release after) they'd pretty much HAVE TO have him featured in End Game to some degree, right? It seems like it potentially wouldn't make any sense at all if not.

goddamn you Russos I can't believe how much you have me legit stressing over this film lol

@breakUbatman - ehhhh I might more appropriately argue that Cap is the HEART.

I don't know, can you be the heart AND the glue? lol We used to have a very obvious answer in this of Coulson, but I think he's been a little busy lately with other things.

breakUbatman - 1/18/2019, 3:25 AM
@CaptCoulson - Think you can be the glue and the heart. Nick and Phil put them together but I've never felt they are essential to the Avengers.

I didn't mind Fury not being in Civil War, but I didn't like that they just outright ignored him, or pretended he couldn't just waltz in like he usually does. They should have at least explained where he was, seeing as in Age of Ultron he was able to come to their rescue out of nowhere.

He's right. It made total sense for him to be there, and he wasn't. Yet Spider-Man and Black Panther were shoe horned into the movie. I like the movie, and them in it, but it still didn't sit right with me.

Leaving Fury out of the conflict was a perfect decision, but not having him involved in helping Cap break everyone out of the Raft was perhaps a missed opportunity
