Unused CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Concept Shows Off Some Comic Accurate Takes On Frank Grillo's Crossbones

Avengers: Infinity War is set to be released next month and with so much of the movie shrouded in secrecy, fans continue speculating about what could be on the way when Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy assemble to battle Thanos. We're obviously going to have to wait and see but one of the most intriguing aspects is how it will deal with Captain America: Civil War's fallout.
In that movie, The Avengers were split in two when Captain America and Iron Man fell on very different sides of the Sokovia Accords and the heroes all went their separate ways when all was said and done.
Of course, one of the men responsible for splitting The Avengers down the middle was Crossbones. The villain deciding to blow himself up is what led to the Scarlet Witch inadvertently harming civilians and while a lot of fans were unsatisfied with his role in the movie, it was definitely memorable. However, it turns out that the character - played brilliantly by Frank Grillo - could have looked much different.

Beneath The Mask
Brock Rumlow was horribly scarred in The Winter Soldier after crossing paths with The Falcon and this piece offers an interesting glimpse beneath the mask broken by Captain America during their fight.
Now there's a face only a mother could love! Poor Crossbones narrowly survived being trapped in the falling Triskelion and ended up with a permanent reminder of crossing the star spangled Avenger.
Perfecting The Villain's Appearance
Crossbones wears a relatively straightforward costume in the comic books but it runs the risk of looking cartoony if not handled the right way and this version definitely ended up working on the big screen.
In this piece, a greater emphasis is put on giving Rumlow an actual skull on his face mask, while the armour also looks bulkier and makes the villain look quite a bit more formidable as a result.
In the movie, the fact Rumlow was essentially on a suicide mission just to blow Captain America to smithereens was something of a surprise but this take on the suit shows off those bombs of his.
Once again, the focus is put on the C5 Rumlow is packing but his mask also looks quite a bit different and the pieces running across his chest create the crossbones effect as opposed to spray paint.
This version of Crossbones is quite a bit more grounded as the mask looks a little more tactical as do the "bones" which run across his chest. It's a cool but somewhat unsatisfying take on the character.
Is it me, or does this costume look like it would fit in well in Gears of War? The bulked-up bad guy in many ways looks a little too good here as it would be hard to root against someone as badass as this!
This take on Rumlow's suit really takes away all the comic book elements in order to give him a realistic appearance which would be 100% believable on the big screen. Who really wants that, though?
Once again, Marvel has given Crossbones an awful lot of armour here and while that would have no doubt made him a better match for Captain America, it wouldn't be very practical for Frank Grillo!
The Mask
Those alternate mask designs were pretty cool, right? Well, we're now taking a look at more alternate designs and it will be interesting seeing which of these you wish had made the cut!
This is a very good look for Rumlow and really increases the fear factor in a way that the final version didn't. After all, wouldn't you feel pretty damn intimidated seeing this guy coming at you in a fight?
The intimidation factor is once again very much on point here and it's interesting to wonder just how much of a different a slightly different design would have made to the villain's overall appearance.
To a certain extent, these masks are all a much of a muchness but they each have very good qualities, so feel free to let us know which of them is your favourite in the comments section down below.
Crossbones' Gauntlets
These gauntlets made a return in Spider-Man: Homecoming and these next few pieces show how many different designs were considered before Marvel ultimately settled on that final version.
These things are huge and while they would have no doubt packed quite the punch, weapons this big could have run the risk of looking cartoonish or impractical in a live-action setting.
These are cool but are again so massive that it might not have made sense for Rumlow to have carried these into action and use them when he finally came to blows with Steve Rogers again.
These are very cool but it's fair to say that Marvel ultimately found the right look for the villain's gauntlets, especially as they're not actually something he's known for using in the comic books.
