CAPTAIN AMERICA: NEW WORLD ORDER Director Julias Onah Explains Meaning Behind The Movie's Title

Captain America: New World Order director Julias Onah has explained the meaning behind the movie's title, while also sharing his thoughts on why now is the right time for Sam Wilson to wield the shield.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier followed Sam Wilson's transformation into Captain America and, by the time all was said and done, he had earned the shield.

His story will now continue in Captain America: New World Order, though there's been a lot of speculation about why the movie has that title. There was an episode of the Disney+ series titled "New World Order," of course, but it appears the name being carried over to this adventure is more coincidence than anything else.

IGN recently spoke with director Julias Onah and asked him straight up what the meaning is behind Captain America: New World Order.

"What does that mean? The decisions he's going to have to make, and the situations he's going to be confronted with are radically different from what Steve Rogers had to deal with," the filmmaker explained. "And as a result of that, because he's a leader, now, of this team, he's got to make decisions that are going to have massive implications."

"So, the world has changed around him and he's a changed man, and I think that leads to some really exciting storytelling."

Onah would go on to share his take on why Sam is the right person to be Captain America following the events of Avengers: Endgame. "Well, look, he is a different human being and coming from a different set of experiences. Back in the Winter Soldier, we saw what it means for somebody like him to take the shield. But it is also a very different MCU."

"It's a post-blip MCU. It's a post-Thanos MCU," the director adds. "So, the world has changed a lot too. And the role of a hero has changed."

If what we saw in the finale was any indication, Sam is going to make a great Cap, and we're definitely intrigued to see where this story goes. It's been confirmed that The Leader will be the movie's big bad, while we also learned at D23 that Danny Ramirez is going to suit up as the MCU's new Falcon.

Captain America: New World Order arrives in theaters on May 3, 2024.

@ShamusG - was just about to ask the same thing. Now I'm wondering if we'll get a team up with the New Avengers or at least some of the members showing up.

@ShamusG - I guess it's safe to say he will have his own "Falcon" now, but apart from that who knows.

@ShamusG - I'm guessing Sabra and Falcon, but outside of that no idea. Maybe one or two more? Doesn't need to be a big team really

@ShamusG - that's the key part that stood out to me. Does this take place before or after thunderbolts?

"So, the world has changed a lot too. And the role of a hero has changed." - eh? How has the role of a hero changed - they do good, save people lives and fight bad guys - its a pretty simple model.

@Radders - I guess it's not black and white anymore what is good and what is bad, but that's not really a new thing. Has been going on since atleast Winter Soldier

Unless the movie has nazis it’s a really bad name for a movie with a black and Israeli/Jewish superhero

I still wish that Bucky was Cap. He could wear the mask and have the general public not know it was Buck. Just like in the comics. Then someone like Zemo could reveal it in the second movie and he has to deal with that. Throw in Yelena as the Black Widow and it's ripe for the Bucky-Cap Brubaker run. Damn that would be something.

@slickrickdesigns - no "avengers" today. But maybe by this movie, the team shown during the Antman Disney attraction is formed. That team included Ms. MARVEL and capt marvel

“ Back in the Winter Soldier, we saw what it means for somebody like him to take the shield. “

What is that supposed to mean, “someone like him”?

Let me guess, they are are going to continue on with this race angle and make it all about that. Sam’s race didn’t matter to us. We liked him as Falcon. He was one of the team and a good character.
His love-hate relationship with Bucky was fun to see.
His race never mattered and was never even touched on th the MCU because he was just part of the team.

Now suddenly they have to belittle the character and make it all about race?

If anything the conflict should be that he isn’t a super soldier and can’t take the same beating when facing superior enemies.
If Sam faced Thanos the way Steve did he would be mashed to a pupp in seconds.
That should and should have been the issue.
He has the heart but he doesn’t have the physical tools.

@TyrantBossMedia - Sure, maybe for you race is not an issue, but it would be in the real world though. Be honest and don't tell me people wouldn't lose their shit if Captain America was real and all of a sudden now there's a black dude replacing him. I mean, people are losing their shit and crying like babies now because of fictional characters being race swapped. I don't understand why tackling the realistic conflict that would arise with a black Cap triggers so many people.
