CAPTAIN AMERICA: NEW WORLD ORDER Star Anthony Mackie On What Makes His Cap Different To Chris Evans' Take

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie has explained how his Captain America will differ from Chris Evans' take while revealing his preparation to wield the shield both in diet and training.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier followed Sam Wilson's transformation from sidekick to the MCU's new Captain America, and if what we saw in the finale is any indication, the hero most definitely deserves the mantle. Actor Anthony Mackie has knocked it out of the park so far, but will he be able to top what Chris Evans did while wielding the shield?

During an interview with Men's Journal, Mackie was asked outright if he believes his Captain America will be better, to which he shared a very interesting response.

"Mine will be different," the actor replied. "What you have to realize about Sam - he’s a superhero who is not really a superhero. There’s no secret serum. There’s no this or that. I just have wings on my suit that I got from the military. So everything that I do, I do as a common man."

"When you see me, you might think, 'Oh, I can be a superhero, too,'" Mackie continues. "Whereas if you look at Hulk or any of those guys, you can’t compete."

Thundercats Role And He Won't Let Anyone Else Play Him

The site also asked how the Captain America: New World Order star is preparing to play the Star Spangled Avenger, and it sounds like it requires a big commitment. "The most important thing is diet. I go to a lean protein and veggie diet of fish, chicken, and turkey with assorted vegetables. I don’t really need carbs for energy."

"I have high energy already. So I just kick out all the bad stuff. I’ll do that for three months - eating five to six meals a day so I can get some bulk on my frame. Then I’ll carb-load for about a month."

"For me, it’s impossible to burn fat and build muscle at the same time. One of them has to be sacrificed, so I try to put the muscle on my frame first, because I have the muscle memory," Mackie added. "After that, I strip all the water and fat out of my system by doing lightweight, cardio-heavy workouts in the morning then cardio again in the evenings."

Mackie has always been in superhero shape, but being Captain America requires him to take that to another level. It certainly sounds like he's prepared, though, and he'll need to be if the rumours about The Leader sending Hulks after Cap prove to be correct!

Captain America: New World Order arrives in theaters on May 3, 2024.

He's got a point. He's just a dude with wings, something I can be as well. Finally some representation for me as the common man

That's what I do like about this Cap. Even tho Rogers was a great human being and had heroic efforts without the serum...

With Sam, there is no bottle. Just fighting and aerial experience.
Origame
Origame - 9/27/2022, 8:01 AM
@KWilly - ...by that logic everything great from Sam came from his vibranium jetpack.

But even then, no. Not everything great about him came from a bottle. He was a great man before the serum. And most of his greatest moments came from his leadership skills and complete selflessness.
KWilly
KWilly - 9/27/2022, 8:09 AM
@Origame - Yeah, I said he was a great human being without the serum. But he is not superhero Captain America without it. So I know you can apply that logic by taking away Sam's wings and whatnot, but I understand what Mackie is going for here.
Origame
Origame - 9/27/2022, 7:57 AM
Yes a common man.

...with a jetpack with indestructible wings and an indestructible shield.

By that logic you're more of a superhero than black widow, hawkeye, and iron man.
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 9/27/2022, 8:01 AM
Ya, Cap is a World War war hero and a super soldier who can do things other men can't while Falcon is an air-force guy who stole his wings and then Tony Stark upgraded a few times for him. Mackie flies fast and shoots stuff while Cap can get down and dirty and even get Thanos to be surprised at his strength of will. I loved the Falcon but him taking Steve Rogers nickname is just ridiculous. Captain America is not a military position or title it's Steve's nickname that was given to sell war bonds many years ago. It's not an official military position that needs to be filled.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/27/2022, 8:23 AM
@WarMonkey - Steve Rogers was promoted to Captain in The First Avenger. He also worked for SHIELD as a special agent. While they never say that Captain America is an actual role in the military or not, he IS a Captain, and they DO have him dress in his costume rather than just putting him in the standard military fatigues.

Regardless if it's considered an actual position or not, he is a recognizable symbol and a sign of good will and hope to the people of the country. Why would they NOT want to replace him to keep that going? After the events of End Game they were quick to replace him with John Walker. John Walker didn't work out, so now it's Falcon.

Again, why would the military not want there to be a Captain America?
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 9/27/2022, 8:37 AM
@CorndogBurglar - He's not a symbol of hope he's a man that did what he believed was right. Also, a captain would be a downgrade for an Airforce pilot.

I guess it's because I believe in individuality over the collective that I feel this way. I don't see him as existing for the greater good I see him just as an individual who makes his own decision and if that means he stands alone against the world then he has no choice but to do what he believes is right. I'm Team Cap, not Team Ironman I guess you could say.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/27/2022, 8:51 AM
@WarMonkey - Captain America is a symbol of hope though. Yeah, Rogers might have just been a guy doing the right thing. He may not have even thought of himself as this symbol. But the Captain America moniker became something more than just a guy. And it became that because of Rogers. And considering that the military goes out of their way to replace him lends to the idea that Captain America is an actual position in the military. And when Cap goes against orders in Civil War, they go after him.

Captain America is supposed to be the living embodiment of America and its principals. But to your point, Cap doesn't really think of himself as that all the time. In the Civil War comics he outright goes against American ideals. When the Stamford incident happens the government passed a law that all heroes needed to register with the government. A law that was legally passed and supported by the American people. But Cap felt it was wrong. He was supporting the illegal activity of vigilantism.

Point being is that Captain America can be both. He can be an official position within the military machine while also having his individuality and ability to make his own decisions. But that doesn't mean the government won't hunt him down if he breaks their laws or doesn't follow orders. Just like anyone else.

WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 9/27/2022, 9:13 AM
@CorndogBurglar - Oh maybe that's where we differ, I don't think of him as a military man. I see him as a EX-soldier who broke away from institutions like the military or gov't because he knows they are run by people that could be good or could be bad so vigorous defense of an institution goes against who he is an an individual.

I see him as a role-model not a symbol which is very close to the same thing but with one clear difference, a symbol can be replaced while a role-model can be emulated but never replaced. (An analogy; getting a new dog after it passed on would be like a role-model while someone getting the same breed and then using the same name would be like a symbol for me)

Also, I just really loved The Falcon so don't like him not being The Falcon anymore. Falcon was actually one of the, if not the first, Marvel character I ever knew of growing up in the 80s besides Hulk cause of his show. I was a DC Super Friends guy growing up and I think it was in a cereal box comic where I was introduced to him.

CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/27/2022, 8:27 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - I'm not a fan of the She Hulk show, and never liked her solo comics either. But I did like her when she was an Avenger. She was more serious in those comics. So hopefully they can do that with her in the MCU and separate the silliness of her solo film from other more serious projects.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 9/27/2022, 8:32 AM
@CorndogBurglar - I still remember making up a comic and in that one, three people died. It was avengers disassembled. The first one was union jack who just got back from space or something, maybe he wasn’t even the first one, he was like a zombie and he blew up killing Stephen Lang. Wait Scott Lang. Stephen Lang is a real person. At the end Hawkeye sacrifice himself. But the middle one was she hulk ripping vision down the middle because he was popping out Ultrons as I remember Tony so cleverly describing it. That must mean I read it again a lot more recently. Might not have been Tony but that was def the phrase. They counted it as 3 deaths tho I count 4. Anyway it was all brought about by scarlet witch. Good stuff
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/27/2022, 8:37 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - Yes! Avengers Disassembled is so awesome. And yeah, She Hulk hulled out and tore Vision in half. And yeah, it was 4 deaths if you count Vision, which you should.

Also, that series and entire Era really was exactly how Dr Strange should be portrayed. I never liked the idea of him being an Avenger. He should be like an advisor that they go to whenever something out of their experience comes along.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 9/27/2022, 8:43 AM
@CorndogBurglar - I’d say apart from everyone (but the eTeRnAlS) fighting Thanos, was one of those, everyone hellbor we all lose types of moments. They were all honorary Avengers, from Green Arrow to Jack Sparrow, but I wouldn’t say he’s still an Avenger ya feel me. It was expedient that’s all
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/27/2022, 8:54 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - Yeah true. But Strange is almost always mentioned when people talk about the next line up of Avengers in the MCU. And I just don't personally feel like everyone needs to be an Avenger.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 9/27/2022, 8:56 AM
@CorndogBurglar - yeah strange and *Black Panther got their own realms to take care of, asterisk by BP for obvious reasons. So yeah I’m with you on that
