Captain America: The First Avenger was a big test for Marvel in 2011. Could they ever really make a movie about a character called "Captain America" a box office hit? After all, Steve Rogers had always been viewed as something of a B-Lister compared to the likes of Spider-Man and the X-Men and anti-American sentiments across the world meant it was simply titled The First Avenger in some places.
The movie actually performed well both critically and commercially and launched a franchise which culminated in Civil War grossing well over $1 billion at the worldwide box office a couple of years back.
We've already looked at some amazing Captain America and Red Skull concept art but what about the posters which didn't end up being used to promote The First Avenger? Well, we've come across a batch of them which are sure to get you talking as they're very different to what ended up popping up online and in theaters. This very patriotic poster shows a Captain America clearly not willing to mess around and while it makes for a great visual, an argument could be made that the hero looks a tad too sinister here.
This poster features Captain America standing tall and ready for action with gun in hand. Given the controversy surrounding gun laws in the states, Marvel might have decided against that imagery.
Steve Rogers once again has a gun in his hand here but this poster otherwise bears a striking resemblance to the ones we ended up getting ahead of the movie's release back in 2010 and 2011.
This idea is better in concept than execution and while it's good to see Cap standing tall here, there are arguably better ways to sell the movie (you know, the muted colours don't really help either).
