CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER Nearly Featured A Battle With A Giant Red Skull-Controlled Robot

Captain America: The First Avengers co-writer Christopher Markus has revealed that one draft of the 2011 movie would have seen Steve Rogers battling it out with a massive Red Skull-controlled robot...

Captain America: The First Avenger was a solid introduction for Chris Evans' Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the final battle saw the villainous Red Skull transported to an unknown destination by the Tesseract. We'd later learn that he was stranded on Vormir as the guardian of the Soul Stone, but it sounds like the final act of that movie could have been very different.

During a recent interview with Yahoo Movies, co-writer Christopher Markus revealed that an earlier version of the 2011 movie featured the Star-Spangled Avenger batting a giant HYDRA robot.

"A large chunk of the third act was Cap fighting this robot," he revealed, confirming that it was going to be called Panzermax and controlled by Hugo Weaving's Red Skull. As fun as that might have been, the writer would go on to explain why the robot never made it in front of cameras.

"I think eventually it was a budget and time thing," Markus explained. "Where it was like, 'We really can’t be spending that much time.'"

The MCU was still in its infancy way back at the start of the 2010s, so it's no wonder Paramount Pictures - the studio Marvel Studios worked with before being acquired by Disney - wasn't going to throw that sort of cash at the project. Whether this concept could be brought back down the line is hard to say, but many comic book fans remain anxious to see more HYDRA and Red Skull on screen.

What do you guys make of this scrapped idea from Captain America: The First Avenger?

So we would've had iron man, cap and Thor all fighting big "robots" in their origin films? I know they wouldn't all technically have been robots, but I'm sure you get what I'm saying

@CaptainScotland - reminds me of that wolverine film where he went to Japan and fought the bot. Very uninspired

Kev has said multiple times how greatful he is to Bob and Disney, for the support and resources they have provided Marvel Studios over the years, the fact that a movie like Infinity War or Endgame simply wouldn't have been possible without them and how amazing platforms like Disney+ are in terms of storytelling.

How ESSENTIAL it was for Iron-man to succeed for MS to truly be born and grow as a Studios, which happened in the end, time jump 10 years in the future and Marvel Studios is a f*cking juggernaut!

There is something i was saying even BEFORE Disney+ was announced, even before the Fox deal, now i'm not saying i've changed my mind, but i realize that things have changed and maybe Disney has changed and from my pov, maybe for the better, i mean...we'll see, i dunno if it has changed...enough.

But what i'm saying is that, if we get to the bottom of it, i think Disney and MS are very similar, but in the end, aren't the same, like...in terms of the philosophes that they share...or do they?

For example, the way i see it, Disney is China's bitch in the end, so they will do everything in their power to please them and not to upset them.
Bob too is China's bitch or at least, knowing the environment he works in/for he knows what he "SHOULD" do and not do, what he should say and how etc...

So when i see big giants like Disney acting in a certain way, i'm not even surprised to see lil guys like John Cena equally being China's bitch.

BUT -and i could be wrong here- i don't think Marvel Studios or Kev, falls in the same category.

If anything, they're RESTRAINED by Disney.

I realize how ironic and paradoxical it all sounds after stating all that shit about Disney plus the Disney moolah etc... but that's how i see it.

It will never happen but i genuinely believe that if MS were to divorce themselves from Disney because...i dunno, Disney mofos went bankrupt and sold MS to someone and eventually they took over everything, srly i'm no expert i'm just spitballin here, basically if we end up in a scenario were Marvel Studios is a standalone-ish Stidios and one that doesn't have to answer to anybody then...phew lad. :')

Kev would go f*cking BALLS DEEP.
He would do everything and anything, WHEN he wanted and HOW he wanted to do! :P

I'd love to see the day when Kev goes all Bane to Disney:

Shiiieeet, i'm getting hard just thinkin about it! >:)

I also believe that MS and Kev in particular, gets a pass from Disney for various things, because they don't want to lose him, he has a certain degree of power in the Disney house unlike...Lucasfilm i reckon.
A kinda power he GAINED over the years and because of the success and money he provided to Disney.

I don't have any f*cking facts, none of us have em, but this is how i perceive their status quo and of course, i could be wrong, the future could prove me wrong.

We'll get R-Rating movies, we'll get a gay kiss in Eternals, soooo it seems good, i'm open to it, i'm not forcing my views on anything but i still feel like if not now, there will come a day when MS will be just too big for Disney, ESPECIALLY if they keep up this pace, i feel like Disney plus came up just in time, now more than ever, MCU needs to spread their wings!

@Doomsday8888 - They better not cut the gay kiss from Eternals! They went public about it, and Marvel never been public about queer rep in films before their release (we learned about Valky in Ragnarok and Ayo in BP after those were already out). I know Disney and its divisions (cough Lucasfilm cough) are notorious queerbaiters, but I feel like MS gonna do us right.

This!
Exactly how i feel/seem em!

That's why even if they were to cut it, i would put the blame on Disney.
They'd be cockblockin em (pun intended? :P).
Cause like you said, MS even went public with that info, so it GOTTA be worth something, right? For their credibility, i mean.

@WakandanQueen - This film is not being released in China due to Chloe Zhao being the director, so if any movie has the chance of featuring explicit gay characters, it’s Eternals.

@Doomsday8888 - When you watch Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, you feel like it could go more adult later on down the line. Back when they were indie.

Now an argument could be made that they wouldn't have made as much money if they did that, so it's probably more beneficial that they were bought by Disney and had to kind of toe the line a little.
Not that they ever compromised their respectability or tone at all, because I never once felt that what I was watching wasn't being true to itself or was ever being overly restrained by censorship.

But now, as you suggest, they are in a position where they can take chances on a couple of projects, like Deadpool and maybe Blade (although even if it remains PG-13 I'm sure we are indeed "gonna like it" still). Maybe Ghost Rider.
(I mean how do you market Ghost Rider as family entertainment, anyway?)

It would have been nice for a more involved confrontation between the two. I STILL don’t get why Red Skull touched the cube and got trapped on a planet and turned into a Spector when everyone else touches like it’s a paper weight. Was hoping Red Skull would have come back as a Big Bad at least at some point. Waste of potential

Well in the comics he fought several Sleepers, so nothing new here.

Honestly? The flying wing was way cooler. TFA was a fun time. I do think it's a shame they never brought the Skull back because Hugo Weaving was about perfect.
I would have loved to see the Sleepers, including the one that was a giant Red Skull head.

The First Avenger was pretty much perfect for me so I’m very pleased it didn’t feature another giant robot.

@Dredd97 - he wasn’t. First off, his theme changes to a more spy soundtrack in Winter Soldier. Second, in Age of Ultron Danny Elman alters the avengers theme (for the worse) before it reverts back in Infinity War
