COMICS: DC Announces New Batwoman Ongoing Series and More!

The second stage of Rebirth is set to kick off come next January, and NYCC revealed details on three new titles and 2 mini-series that will be a part of it. Firstly, Justice League of America and Super Sons, both originally announced as part of the first Rebirth wave will finally see release. JLA, written by Steve Orlando and drawn by Ivan Reis, will debut in February, following 4 one-shot issues in January focusing on the four known team members: The Atom (Ryan Choi), Vixen, The Ray, and Killer Frost.

Next, new details were finally revealed on Super Sons, the series due to focus on the adventures of Damian Wayne and Jonathon Kent. Though originally solicited for a September debut with the creative team of Chris Burns, Dennis Culver, and Joge Jimenez, the book has been pushed back to February. Jimenez remains on board, but at the writer's board now sits Peter Tomasi, cowriter on the current Rebirth Superman series.

The only new ongoing series to be announced was Batwoman. Marguerite Bennet (DC Comics Bombshells) will pen the series, with Detective Comics scribe James Tynion IV cowriting the first arc, while Steve Epting handles the art. Bennet describes the series as a globe-trotting mystery, and declares that "There has never been a heroine I have loved more than Batwoman.......To be a queer woman and to see a queer woman as not just a part but a pillar of the Bat-family was life changing, inspiring, and gave me the courage to pursue this career in comics. The opportunity to add to Kate Kane's story and legacy is both an honer and a sincere dream come true". Battwoman will commence with a Rebirth One-Shot in February, before beginning the regular monthly series.

Lastly, two new 6-part miniseries were announced, joing a growing group of such miniseries which currently includes the like of "Midnighter and Apollo" and "The Death of Hawkman". Cary Bates and Greg Weisman will return the character they penned together for the New 52 with "The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom", promising the return of the classic hero and an explanation for his years-long absence that will transcend time and space. It is worth noting that Captin Atom was in part the inspiration for Watchmen's Dr. Manhatten, a character assumed to play a crucial role in the overall Rebirth story. The second miniseries announced was "The Odyssey of the Amazons", written by Kevin Grevioux and drawn by Kevin Benjamin. Set before the birth of Wonder Woman, it follows a group of Amazons on a globe-trotting odyssey, encountering an assortment of legendary beasts and beings along the way. Both mini-series kick off in January.

What do you think of these announcements? Are you looking forward to any of them? What other characters and stories do you want to appear in Rebirth Wave 2? Sound off in the commetns below!

Hmm... I like that less popular characters are getting more time to shine, but the only series here I'm interested in are Super Sons and The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom. Never been a fan of Batwoman, but to each their own.

@BrettMan - I like the Captain Atom art. Gives me a Dr. Manhattan feel to it.

'Asses'? Was that done purposely instead of 'Assess'?

Great article overall.

I wish DC would do a true reboot - as in, they retell the origins of Superman, Batman, Dick Grayson/Robin, EVERYONE, truly from the beginning. Give it 5 years and the stories would be caught up to where Dick could go back to Nightwing, you could retell Superman vs Doomsday, etc. Even bringing the Watchmen into normal continuity would be easier then, I love DC's characters but damn their story telling is generally subpar
