Perhaps the most exciting piece of news for comic book lovers to come out of this year's San Diego Comic-Con is the fact that Neil Gaiman will team-up with J.H Williams III for a prequel to Sandman. Rumours of this first surfaced earlier today, but this makes Gaiman's return to the universe (25 years after the first issue was published) official. Below is a video statement from the writer (with just a small part of it transcribed) as well as some stunning artwork from the series.

"In November, 2013, it will have been 25 years since Sandman #1 was published, which means that 2013 seems like a particularly good year to tell that story; to get together with one of the finest artists in comics today to actually explain what Morpheus had been doing before Sandman #1 had began. And I'll be telling that story. So, the as yet untitled (or if it's titled, it's definitely unannounced) new Sandman that's going to be coming out in 2013, I'm incredibly excited to say it's going to be drawn by J.H. Williams."

This is supposed to be a mini, but I hope it ends up leading to a full ongoing series.

I recently bought nearly the whole series online and I can't wait to fill it in to start reAding it. I flipped through a few issues though and wasn't too impressed. Could someone say why the series's appealed to them.

The one thing that the early issues lack is decent artwork, that can tend to put some people off. Don't let it, the art gets better and the writing is second to none. Trust, me you will not have read anything like it - comic or otherwise - and you prob never will again.

A still unsurpassed work of historical, mythological, cosmic horror & beauty...Sandman has it all for me. It changed me as a teenager to pick these comics up, it was so different than everything else that was out there. It was like a message in a bottle from a far away yet strangely familiar place... Sandman is a deep work that stays with you long after you read it, and I feel blessed that we can get one more go-around with the King of Dreams.

I wanted to hear the Sandman stories that happen after "The Wake,", but I will still be there on the first day this comes out for my copy. "Endless NIghts" was entertaining, but this has the potential to be something more...What is Morpheus doing in another galaxy, and what do their dreams look like, I wonder? Some fertile territory to explore there for sure...

Good luck Neil and J.H.!!!

It has been a long time since my last post, but this is truly worth it. This was the series that introduced me to a whole new kind of comic book, after years reading only Superheromaterial. Since then I read the whole series more then a dozent times (including Endless Nights, Dream Hunters, Death Vol 1+2 and The Sandman Companion). For a monthly series it had a very high level of storytelling with a lot of shorts that stood out (The Sound of her Wings, Ramadan, A Midsummer Nights Dream, Three Septembers & a January, A Tale of two cities), together with surprisingly unconventional arcs like Game of You. The possibilities for new stories are endless :) and it is nice to get to know more about the hinted events Gaiman mentioned in the clip. For my money I would like to read more about the circumstances that lead to Delights transformation into Dilirium. Who knows, maybe one day...
I'm really excited about this and I have a feeling that it won't be a let down(Not like 90% of the Stuff that DC published over the last years ...suck my balls Before Watchman & New 52)

One of the greatest comics of all time. I can't express how much I love this series. I even wrote a literary analysis of this for a class once. It is the series that inspired me to try and be a writer.

I am thrilled to see Gaiman and a talented artist working on the prequel. The art throughout the original series was varied and fantastic. Though, I sadly did not care too much for the style of volume 9, though it did fit the style of the story well.

That is one thing I always liked about Gaiman, he would find out which artist he would be working with and would tailor the scripts to their style, even delaying certain stories until a specific artist was available
