COMICS: Brian Michael Bendis Tweaks SUPERMAN's Origin In MAN OF STEEL #1

After departing Marvel for DC Comics, veteran comic scribe Brian Michael Bendis is wasting no time in putting a personal stamp on his opening Superman story, slightly retconning the Man of Steel's origin.

Superman has one of the most well-known comic book origins outside of the vigilante career that begins in Crime Alley.  Kryptonian scientist Jor-el discovers that the planet is in danger of exploding and tries to warn the ruling body to no avail.  Desperate, he sends his infant son to Earth aboard a spaceship, moments before Krypton's destruction.

But what if Krypton's demise wasn't due to natural causes?  What if someone intentionally destroyed the planet?  That's the new wrinkle being added to the Superman mythos in Brian Michael Bendis' first issue in DC's new Man of Steel title.  An alien powerhouse named Rogol Zaar is claiming he manufactured the planet's destruction out of fear that their expanding empire would threaten galactic peace.  Years later, he's out to finish the job by taking out the last survivor of Krypton, Superman.

There's other side mysteries presented in the debut issue but most comic book fans are focusing on the new villain and speculating on the veracity of his claims.  Krypton's destruction by outside forces isn't exactly something new as other takes on the origin tale position Brainiac as the mastermind by the tragic events but the planet's downfall is still widely accepted as the fallout from natural events.

I think my favorite version is Brainiac being behind it Krypton’s end. Makes his beef with Superman a little more personal.

Not a big tweak imo. Brainiac pulled similar shit.

I've always preferred the Kryptonians to be the makers of their own annihilation. It's relatable to our actions here on Earth, more so than some random alien coming out of the blue and destroying it. But when they do go in that direction, I find Brainiac's to be the most convincing because he's not just singling out Krypton. It's his mission to find hundreds of planets across the galaxy and collect their cities.

This new villain's motives sound kinda cliche tbh, but it could be cool.

Tbh, the first issue surprised me. It reminded me of Bendis in his best days.
But still, this man needs to learn how to stop too much speech bubbles.

In the Post-Crisis, Krypton was destroyed by Black Zero. In the cartoons, by Brainiac. In the movies, by a supernova. It changes all the time.
