Milestone characters have had a rough start within the New 52 (See Static Shock run), so I understand why DC Comics is in no rush to introduce Icon. However, I think if approached from the right angle, Icon can be an extremely unique. Some also say that a solo series with Icon might be too similar to Shazam’s and Superman’s. I think although these characters have similar powersets, Icon’s stories can be drastically different. First of all, He is also at least 150 years old (this is when he first crashed down to Earth). Therefor, the series could be made up of Icon as the earth’s silent and sole protector against evil without disrupting the continuity. He could be fighting aliens from the 1880’s, but had to move within the shadows because the world was not ready for a flying alien back then. Completely new villains could be made from this and it still wouldn’t affect the continuity. Stories could also be told about how Icon might’ve been seen as a major threat and had run ins with the Intelligence Agencies world wide similar to the situation with Blue Marvel from Marvel Comics. Finally, within the backdrop of this, his personal life would be extremely unique. He’s currently a wealthy lawyer, but on top of that he’s a black man (who started out as a slave) that has experienced the past 150 years of life in America. This vast experience and is why his story would be so different than Shazam’s or Superman’s. I could envision him in a mentor role to many of the top-tier power level heroes.
