Mark Millar Shares His Thoughts On The Relaunched DC Universe And More!

Talking at the Glasgow Comic Con, Mark Millar has shared his thoughts on the relaunch of the DC Universe as well as answering whether he would consider writing Superman at some point in the near future...

Thanks to a lengthy transcript from comicbookGRRRL, we have the following comments from comic book writer and creator Mark Millar about the upcoming relaunch of the DC comic book universe. Below are a handful of excerpts from the report, but I strongly advise clicking the link below to head on over the the site to read Millar's thoughts on the portrayal of female characters in comics, the current trend of regular "event" books, and why he's left Marvel to focus more on his own creator owned work.

It's a tricky one because if you're a fan of something, sometimes it's really alluring, the idea of going and doing it. But then, I love the Clangers, I love the Wombles, I like the Mr Men, but I don't want to write them! I like them existing, I love it as part of my life, my childhood especially, but the idea of doing back and doing it...I don't know, I feel that ship has sailed. Even two years ago I think it would have been a wee bit different but I just feel the exciting stuff that's happening just now is creator owned. Something like Kick-Ass is the most fun I've ever had writing anything and I could never get away with doing something like that at DC, I'd feel as if I was wearing a straightjacket. Dealing with corporate culture, everything that I wanted to stop doing at Marvel is ten times worse with DC

I love owning my own characters. I interviewed Stan Lee a few years ago and Stan said why don't you just do your own characters, I didn't go and write Superman and Batman, I went off and created Marvel guys.

The culture atrophies if we just keep recycling the same thing, and when I saw the new Justice League that's coming out in September, all slightly redesigned, it just felt like when you see Sylvester Stallone's mum with botox?! It just looks weird. How many times can Batman kick the shit out of the Joker? How many times can the Penguin cause grief? If Galactus hasn't destroyed the Earth the last forty times, chances are things are going to be fine!

And at DC it seems that there's a massive desperation, they're relaunching their entire line right now in September, all in one month. And I said, why didn't you guys just roll it out over a year so that everybody gets a chance to buy, you know, try out the first issues? And they said, we're actually more accountable to Warner Brothers now than we've ever been before – we need to show some serious profit.

While it's interesting to read what the writer of hits like Kick-Ass, Civil War, Nemesis and Old Man Logan had to say about the controversial relaunch of the DC Universe, I find his remarks about DC being more accountable to Warner Bros. most interesting. Could they be the reason behind the simplification and rebooting of some of the comic companies best known characters? Be sure to share your thoughts on these comments in the usual place!

Well Nemesis is kinda like a bad Batman, and Superior is similar to idk a crippled Captain Marvel so you really didn't create Marvel you Copied DC-I;m sorry this guy just pisses me off when he talks. His books are turning out to be just as much of a gimmick.

I thought it was bad enough that WB aren't gonna gives us a JLA movie or even a Flash movie, let alone all the other characters. But now they want the comics to show profit? What are they gonna do, shut DC down? And if they do that (and believe me, it's possible) they're not exactly gonna sell the characters to anyone else, are they? I mean they're fighting to keep Superman and he's not exactly the most lucrative franchise, is he? Batman'll be fine; along with Spidey and maybe the X-Men, he's always good for shit-loads of cash.

@DukeAcureds

I vote Batman make his way into the Marvel Universe if DC goes under. But that would never work. Also I think DC would just downsize and make alot less comics (which they should do anyway). I mean I love alot of the characters but some of those comics are just STUPID boring.

Marvel might end up with Superman if the Shusters get the rights back. But I don't think Warners would ever let the ol' Bats out of their sight. Besides you're right. It'd never work anyway.

If Millar's comments about DC and WB are true, I'm not saying they are my, then this explains why the movies aren't as good as they should be. If WB wants to see profits, especially from movies and tv with these characters, they need to let DC have more control and say in these matters. After all it is their property and if they are paying attention to to us, the fans, then they have an idea what we want. Corporations just can't keep their hands off things, and we suffer for it.

He is an excellent writer.
I loved his "Ultimates", both seasons, and "American Jesus: Chosen", I liked "Superman: Red Son" and have been traumatized by "The Unfunnies" (one of the most grotesque and pessimistic comics I ever read).
His only comic I didn't find much above average is "Wanted".
But that doesn't mean he isn't a douchebag.

@Duke

Superman would be more out of place in marvel than ANYTHING, his whole back-story would be shot.

Again, what a way to honor the first superhero. But Millar's ok.

Wow, sour grapes because DC/Warner didn't hire you for your AMAZING Superman reboot with your "A-List" director buddy a few years back, Mark? You hurt some peoples' ego and boy they never forget it...

@Nomis

I think you'll find he is also responsible for many other amazing stories. Millar has wrote some fantastic comics. Red Son and The Ultimates were amazing.

~Not a big fan of him as a person when he's running his mouth though.

I've been wondering, as a girl who likes her bulges, what do you think of them getting rid of Superman's red panties? Good or bad?

I'm really annoyed with DC not keeping a stable storyline and/or continuity. Marvel is more stable-ish than DC is. With DC it's always, "Reboot this!" "Reboot that!" "Not pleased with this? We'll just retcon the whole thing!" Like I said, really annoying. That's only my opinion.

Mark's right about DC, they simply can't progress beyond a point so they regress or reboot everything and do it all over again. This is why their fanbase is a majority of people who don't ever accept changes, why every character who dies has to come back to life again. Too many huge crisis stories and time travel crap that causes more problems than it solves.

Disney and Warner Brothers will merge in our lifetimes. Count on it. And McDonald's will buy Burger King, after the latter purchases Wendy's and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Maybe Miller's just pissed at DC because Marvel seem to be the only ones paying for him to write their characters?
I'm sure if he was offered the Justice League gig he'd be singing a different tune.

LOL @ Ceejay's diagnosis of DC fans...As if ONLY DC characters ever get resurrected or get involved in huge crossovers or time travel stories. Fanboys these days....

Wow WB is really [frick]ing up DC. I used to be fine with WB and DC working together (i.e. all those Animated Shows from the 90s) but WB is getting out of hand now.
HelaGood
HelaGood - 6/20/2011, 1:51 PM
@113 i used to be an art director at WB and in the 10 years that i worked there they ALWAYS messed up DC's stuff as well as their own (ie. Looney Tunes). it used to piss me off so much!!! it seemed they were pretty much aware of the characters but wanted to do something specifically OUT OF CHARACTER simply because they could. and i think that was most recently witnessed with the Wonder Woman tv show.

I personally love Mark Millar's stuff sure he's arrogant but there is truth in what he says.

Both Marvel and DC have to recycle themes by nature. You always know that eventually so and so will return to being in their classic costume, alive etc. Doesn't mean it can't be fun though.

I enjoyed Millars work and I can tell you now Jeph Loeb is the guy who screwed up The Ultimates: Millars run was a contemporary homage to Stan Lee & Jack Kirby, while Jeph Loebs run was a homage to Millar.Ultimate Avengers was quite enjoyable not greatbut enjoyable.

The reason I don't read DC other than Batman and Green Lantern is because of all the Crises, I just don't know where to begin.

Relaunching everything with new costumes for everyone and such doesnt make sense to me though what's the in story explanation?, if it was one character or team cool but everyone!

Aquaman - Namor
