Why Superheroes Are Awesome: DC Teams Up With Puerto Rican Artists For Hurricane Relief
Wonder Woman and Batman are joining forces with Puerto Rican superhero La Borinqueña in a new comics anthology that will benefit victims of Hurricane Maria. Hit the jump for the details on this initiative.
While we don't have superheroes to literally save people in need of help, superheroes can certainly help in other ways. This once again became apparent when it was announced this week that DC Comics heroes would be partnering up with Puerto Rican superhero La Borinqueña in the upcoming anthology Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico.
All proceeds from sales will go to outreach groups looking to provide basic necessities to victims of Hurricane Maria. The stories featured in the anthology will celebrate Puerto Rico's culture and history. The island's native comic book hero, La Borinqueña, can be seen alongside Wonder Woman on Tony Daniel's stunning cover.
La Borinqueña, created by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, draws her powers from the history and mysticism found on the island. These forces give her super strength, the ability to fly, and control over the weather.
There will be over 100 stories in Ricanstruction, produced by a number of well known comic writers and artists. The list includes Gail Simone, Greg Pak, Reginald Hudlin, Denys Cowan, Ken Lashley, Bill Sienkiewicz, Yanick Paquette, Will Rosado, Jorge Jimenez, and Chris Sotomayor.
A few well-known actors will be contributing as well, including Daredevil's Rosario Dawson and Fear The Walking Dead's Rubén Blades.
The anthology will be available for purchase on May 23 and can be pre-ordered right now.
