Marvel Cancels GLAAD-Nominated Titles Due To Poor Sales

Every Marvel book nominated for a GLAAD award was roundly rejected by readers, forcing Marvel to kill off the heavily political titles.

Bobby Drake, aka Ice-Man, has been a staple of Marvel's line-up since he was introduced by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in X-Men #1 back in 1963.

In recent years, Drake was re-imagined as a gay character as part of the comics giant's push for "diversity" in its titles.

But the new Ice-Man has been iced....he's not the only one. Via Gizmodo:

"Every year, the LGBTQ+ advocacy group GLAAD recognizes and awards a selection of television shows, films, and books that feature powerful portrayals of queer people.  This year, a number of Marvel's comics were recognized for the contributions they've made to queer culture, but those nominations were bittersweet for one incredibly disappointing reason: They've all been canceled."

In addition to "Iceman," recently discontinued Marvel titles include "America," about a queer Latina student, and "Black Panther: World of Wakanda," which was canceled after only six issues.  The latter prominently featured LGBTQ characters and was spearheaded by Roxane Gay, an acclaimed feminist essayist and scholar.

The reason for the cancellations?  Poor sales.

According to The Daily Caller, "Iceman" only sold about 15,000 copies when it debuted in 2017; by the end of the year, those numbers had plummeted 30 percent.  None of the three canceled titles, which had all won a GLAAD 2018 "Outstanding Comic Book" nod, managed to break the top 100 in sales.

The cancellations come amidst increasing unrest among some readers and comic retailers over perceived prioritization of left-wing politics over character and story consistency at Marvel.

Iceman isn't gay.

If the character is gay, I'd rather it be treated casually. Yes, they're gay, but this not their entire being; their entire personality.

Pick up a Midnighter comic to see how it's done right.

I'm just sad that they also cancelled Generation X. :(

That's good.
Iceman was never gay and how they put him across as gay was horribly offensive and how Marvel have been handling LGBTQA characters in general they don't deserve any awards for it.

Well if your title isn’t Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Wolverine, Deadpool, Daredevil, the X-men or the Avengers then eventually your title will be cancelled, and usually sooner rather than later because nobody ever wants to give anything else a chance.

I've read those old alpha flight comics where it was heavily i.plied that Northstar was gay. Even though they couldn't be as open with it as they would today, you could sense his anger at having this double life he couldn't really talk about (again, such were the times). BUT it NEVER stopped his stories or the character from making an impression as a fleshed out individual. I just think his powers were terrible. He flies fast. Basically. That's it. I'm not gay, but they could've made him a bit more prominent or powerful if he was going to be Marvel's only gay character for awhile

You really think if Iceman was still claiming to be straight that his solo title would have lasted any longer? Because you are kidding yourself.

They should have done a DC... Make a NEW version of an established character and make them gay ala BATWOMAN

I feel like this marvel "strategy" would have worked ten years ago. Its way too late in the game to think just using a gay character will increase sales or exposure to the general public. It's like they think they are being edgy

Don’t worry Iceman is sure to be gay when Marvel Studios reboots the X-men movies and probably has a decent chance at a solo movie.
