My thoughts on Spider-Man #700 and Superior Spider-Man #1

Editorial Opinion

Filed Under: Marvel Comics

So, I have seen people say that TASM #700 and Superior Spider-Man #1 are complete garbage. After hearing what the plot line was, I was in agreement, but while browsing through my local comic store I stumbled upon it and decided, "What the heck! I'll buy it and give it a shot." The next few paragraphs are why I sincerely hate The "Superior" Spider-Man.

After reading Spider-Man #700, I thought, "Ok, it's super creepy that Ock gets to have a relationship with MJ without her ever knowing it's not really Peter, and the ending is really cheesy." However, I thought I could at least except it for what it was. The end of the Spider-Man we know and the age of a new Spider-Man. Think it would have been better to have Peter win in the end, but whatever. It's the end, it's over. Curtain call. Slott was making statements that implied this was how it was gonna be and fans would just have to deal.

BUT THEN!

Superior Spider-Man #1 happened. IMO the biggest cop-out I have ever read in comic history.

First off, Ock's creepy way of talking about how he's gonna get some from MJ in the book is quite freaking creepy, and if he does later on in the series I am gonna be sincerely pissed at Slott.

I'm sorry, but this is just so...gross and sickening to me. As if it isn't a big enough slap in the face that you have killed our hero, now you go off and give him "the spoils" by having MJ too. Another big problem I have with this is that several times Ock says something so out of character towards MJ and still she doesn't pick up on something being wrong here. His attitude towards her goes from "I love you MJ" to "Shut up woman." How does she not notice that?

But moving on from that...

Let's focus on what this means for Spider-Man. So Ock takes Spider-Man to a level he's never been before. He doesn't hold back or play nice. He has no problem with going in and killing a super villain. This was originally displayed in TASM #700 when he hits Scorpion so hard he knocks his jaw clean off. However, Ock then promises after seeing all of Peter's memories and sacrifices that he will take on the responsibility of this power. An issue later he's out to kill the new Sinister Six... Boy that was some promise. (Side note from Spider-Man #700) Well now that he's changed who Spider-Man is and what he stands for, Dan then throws a huge curve ball I didn't see coming. Jonah Jameson actually likes the new Spider-Man?! Peter makes sacrifices again and again. Always checking his spider strength to ensure he doesn't kill anyone, and Jonah despises him. Yet, when Spider-Man rips off the jaw of Scorpion Jonah's like, "Hey, great job. Knew you had it in you kid." What is this!?

However, once again I could live with all of this up to this point. Figured it's a new Spider-Man. It's no longer Peter Parker. I can move on and wait for them to do a real reboot to enjoy my favorite Marvel hero again, and then..

Dan apparently got scared by the death threats from fans and "made it right again" by bringing Peter back as a "ghost" like conscience fighting to take back control of his body. Now I'm sorry, but this just sucks. I would rather see Peter dead, than have Peter have to sit in the passenger seat of his body while Ock ruins the name of Spider-Man, kisses his girl (and will soon probably sleep with his girl), and is praised by the man he could never get off his back. When Peter, comes back he'll forever feel betrayed by MJ because she couldn't see it wasn't him and Ock got to have his way with her and that he was the inferior Spider-Man because Ock did what Peter couldn't, win Jameson's approval.

My thoughts after crawling through this comic book garbage....

Until Marvel reboots, Spider-Man is officially dead to me :(

I know man. It's kinda sad. Really wish they would just pull a "New 52" and start over. All they have to do is have Galactus go on a feeding frenzy and eat the entirety of the Marvel Universe. Then, have it start over. Like a "Big Bang" from Galactus lol. Easy as pie.

Yeah that was one factor in me buying it. As well as why I bought Deadpool Killistrated #1 lol

This is just a bad story, it doesn't make Peter go against everything he stands for like OMD did. And you like the ultimate spider-man cartoon, which completely negates the lesson Peter learnt from uncle ben's death by making SHIELD the ones who have to teach him responsibility. And even as a bad story I've read much worse spider-man stories I.e. the clone saga, sins past and some of slott's other stories like the FF team up one. The clone saga and sins past took everything that fans had been reading for a good 20-25 years and shit on them, this is just something that will last at most about 15 issues, then before TASM 2 comes out and we'll get a new number 1 with Peter back. I'm not saying this is good because it's quite bad, but rebooting spider-man is unecessary because all if needs is a good writer who gets spider-man, I'd personally like to see either Mark Waid, Jason Aaron, Rick Remender or Jonathan Hickman take over then I think the amazing spider-man comic will get good again.

@LEVITIKUZ it won't go for much in the future because of how many copies they will have made, which is I'd say around 300,000 - 400,000. It's the same reason why issues of the death of superman are now even less than the cover price, and that's because of how many copies they printed which was around 3 million and its over 20 years old. The most expensive comic from the 2000's is ultimate spider-man issue 1, and that's because they're wasn't that many copies printed, that comic is about 100 on eBay. Superior won't be worth anything in 10 years time.

@Spideyguy94

Are you still harping over this on a completely unrelated article? That show does not negate anything Ben taught him at all. All Fury does is help him grow along the way. And saying this is just a bad story is bull crap. Let the Joker, swap minds with Batman for a few issues and go on a killing spree. What would it do for the character? It ruins the symbol the hero stands for. Ock running around ripping jaws off of villains or beating them to an inch of their life in front of the cameras changes the way people will view Spider-Man and in the end will ruin Peter's legacy. So I have to disagree with you yet again. It may not change who Peter is, but Ock can ruin Spider-man's good reputation and soil Parker's good name. He isn't Peter, just pretending to be. He's inventing weapons as Peter Parker and nearly killing people as Spider-Man. Please tell me how this can't play out badly in the long run for the character? He'll also have to bring him back in some cheesy way, then have a really cheesy "redemption" story line to repair the damage Ock will do. Which in my mind ruins the character. I don't want to have to keep seeing Peter Parker revolutionized again and again and again within the same series. All Superior is now is a continuation of TASM with a new paint job. I don't mind seeing alternate versions of a character as long as they make it known it's something different from the main line (i.e. Ultimate Spider-man) but they continue to crap on Spider-Man again and again and again throughout the years of TASM. It's just going to continue. Reboot it. Go back to the basics and save the character.

@LEVITIKUZ... Technically neither one of them died lol. Batman just went back in time and Superman went into a comatose like state to heal. And technically I guess now Peter isn't really dead. just locked out of his body. -_-
Spideyguy94
Spideyguy94 - 1/25/2013, 9:09 AM
@LEVITIKUZ Yeah It sucks. Although I've got a plan like that myself. About 2 years ago I bought 2 copies of the amazing spider-man 300, one to keep and one to sell. Both together cost me £200 which I thought at the time was steep, but I recently seen one go on eBay for nearly £400 so I'm just gonna keep that issue for another 10-15 years and hopefully the price will have trebled.
Rhino4508
Rhino4508 - 1/25/2013, 9:14 AM
@Spideyguy

That is well worth it. I've got a copies of The Amazing Spider-man 316 and 317. Still the best Venom in my opinion. Never could find a copy of 300 I could afford though *sigh* -_- Congrats though lol.
Spideyguy94
Spideyguy94 - 1/25/2013, 9:18 AM
@Rhino4508 It is just a bad story. We all know Peter will come back and he is in there, his subconscious will not let ock kill. Can I just ask do you think this is worse than OMD?
Spideyguy94
Spideyguy94 - 1/25/2013, 9:20 AM
@LEVITIKUZ Yeah batman is my favourite comic on the stands at the moment. Johns' GL has been great, but his aquaman is superb.
Spideyguy94
Spideyguy94 - 1/25/2013, 9:23 AM
@Rhino4508 thanks man. Yeah I love micheline and mcfarlane's run on spidey. Definitely the best venom stories, and mcfarlane's art is fantastic.
Rhino4508
Rhino4508 - 1/25/2013, 9:30 AM
@Spideyguy94

Honestly, no. While I absolutely hate what Slott has done in this Superior Spider-Man run, OMD pissed me off. I was already annoyed with Spider-Man in the comics (as well as the films lol), but when I found out that they'd erased the love story between MJ an Peter that's when I just saw Spider-Man as the Marvel toilet. They had finally made me hate my favorite hero since the time I was a toddler. Although I will say I enjoyed the Gauntlet run just because there were a lot of villains included and a lot of action that didn't necessarily discuss OMD in too much detail. Then, I gave it up again with Grim Hunt and didn't pay any attention to Spider-Man til 700 came out and I found out he was dying in a really lame way. Personally I love classic Spidey.
Rhino4508
Rhino4508 - 1/25/2013, 9:33 AM
@Spideyguy

Agreed! Loved how Peter played with the symbiotes emotions in 317 to defeat Venom. That's the Spider-Man I loved. Brain over brawn a lot of the time.
Spideyguy94
Spideyguy94 - 1/25/2013, 9:35 AM
@Rhino4508 Yeah OMD imo is the worst comic book story ever written. It does say it all when the 3 best spider-man related titles don't even have Peter Parker in there anywhere (venom, scarlet spider and ultimate)
Rhino4508
Rhino4508 - 1/25/2013, 9:37 AM
@Spideyguy

Yet another thing we can agree on. Aquaman has been a very enjoyable book. Love how they poke fun at all the Aquaman jokes towards the beginning of the series.

Also, you guys hear about Justice League of America #1 with the Flag Variants? I just ordered my state flag's variant haha.
Spideyguy94
Spideyguy94 - 1/25/2013, 9:39 AM
@Rhino4508 I love classic spidey as well. Amazing spider-man issue 1-340 is gold IMO, after that it wasn't until JMS came on the book that spidey was fantastic every month, but we all know how that ended. F*ck joe quesada, he was start of this mess for spidey.

ToTheManInTheColdSweat
ToTheManInTheColdSweat - 1/25/2013, 9:46 AM
lmbo, you guys must be really young to still believe in that #1 issue bullshit. 10 years from now its gonna be $50 tops, a 20 years from now $200 and thats if the remaining 290,000 people that also bought it lose theirs or burn it.

marvel has you hoodwinked with that dumb collectors /future worth mentality. and its from the stereotype that comicbook readers are losers living in their mothers basement that spend their money on comics hoping it would be valuable one day. so stop buying shitty comic book #1s, unless you believe you are still gonna be poor and broke in 10 years, then by all means continue.
Spideyguy94
Spideyguy94 - 1/25/2013, 9:53 AM
@Rhino4508 I liked maximum carnage yes. But it's not got the character driven stuff I'm used to in a spidey book, I enjoy because it's a really fun read. It's one of those type if stories I pick up and read when I'm drained from university and work and I don't have to think about the story.
Rhino4508
Rhino4508 - 1/25/2013, 9:54 AM
@ToTheManInTheColdSweat

$50 bucks is still more than the 7 I paid for it. Looks like a win to me. Lol. I like comics so I buy comics. Not about being valuable. It's about having Something you can pass down or show off and if it happens to be valuable one day great but that's not the sole reason for buying a #1 man.

@Spideyguy

Oh lol.

Thing is, this idea has been done so much better before - characters have posed as Spidey to ruin his rep in the past. Chameleon, Mysterio, Scorpion, Kraven, all of whom only had to dress as him to ruin his name. So to do something as stupid as a full on mind-swap with Doc Ock is a silly way of presenting an old idea as something new, and not only dumbing it down for the audience, but also prolonging it unnecessarily. I mean, if it was just someone in a costume, then you have the added dilemma of Peter being unable to prove his innocence without revealing his identity. Only thing this 'mind swap' offers is for Slott to write Peter/Ock as a pervert.

I will never read again, unless, MAYBE, Slott actually makes me like Spock
So far, Yost is good at that, Slott has no [frick]ing idea what he is doing.

How is it that Marvel adores their movies by putting dedication into them- yet when it comes to their comics, crap all over their heroes and kill them off in stupid and offensive ways?

I won't be quite as hostile or unforgiving as some others.

You've summed up all of the things that have left me feeling uncomfortable/uneasy about the new status quo. I agree with pretty much all that you've stated.

I started collecting comics again (after a decade and a half long hiatus) with the onset of Marvel Now. A big part of the reason was to get my girlfriend into reading comics and not just watching the cartoons and movies, but I also wanted to give Marvel another chance to be fantastic. I made the decision to give each title that I tried 5 issues to wow me, after which time, they get dropped if they fall flat. From what I've encountered so far, and for the same reasons that you've stated above, I'll probably be letting go of Spider-Man yet again.

So sad........ :(

If you aren't die hard Marvel only.. Go check out The New 52. So far Aquaman, Batman titles, JL, GL, Flash, and a few others are doing really well. Also, Check out Deadpool Killistrated. I am going to be looking into Savage Wolverine, Nova, and Uncanny X-men. So be looking for my thoughts on those to know if they are worth getting.
GhostZillaRider
GhostZillaRider - 1/27/2013, 7:57 PM
@Rhino- I kind've am Marvel only. *bashful and blushing*

That isn't to say that I don't think DC doesn't have some great talent; they do, and I've heard outstanding things about some of their titles. I've just always been more interested in Marvel's characters. Prference, that's all. No judgement here.

As for your other picks; Deadpool Killustrated left me feeling blah. Not really the Deadpool that I was hoping to read, and the story confused me a bit not having read "Deadpool vs. the Marvel Universe", or whatever it's called. Savage Wolverine was pretty awesome. I'm hoping that it will stay savage, and get even more brutal, getting Wolverine back to his old, badass self. Nova, I'm not really interested in. And I'm not a huge X-Men buff, (and am already thrilled with All New,) that I probably wont pick up Uncanny X-Men.

And, before anyone stones me for saying it, it isn't that I don't like the X-Men. I actually enjoy a lot of the characters. I've just always been more partial to the lone heroes who occasionally team up with others, ala Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and Moon Knight. The team "thing" never really did it for me. It only really worked, for me, with the FF. Don't know why I feel that way.....
Rhino4508
Rhino4508 - 1/27/2013, 9:38 PM
@GhostZillaRider

Hey man I don't judge lol. Preference is preference. As for X-Men, I don't want to start late into All New and have to catch up. Plus, I like the idea of Cyclops leading the Brotherhood in Uncanny.

Now Nova, I enjoy the Ultimate Spider-Man show and Nova's character within it. (I will probably get stoned for that, but oh well) I think it's going to be a fun comic and a fresh start.

Deadpool Killistrated serves one purpose for me. It's a different comic that is quite humorous. Which I kind of need right now lol.

I can understand being a fan of only one Universe. I have just always loved characters from both companies. Spider-Man, Daredevil, and X-Men from Marvel (and I mean the old school stuff not the new age) I loved X-Men back when it was Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, and Marvel Girl. Along with that, I loved Batman and Superman.

Later, Marvel shit on my favorites and I turned away from them. DC on the other hand upped their game and I began to enjoy more of their character selection. Nightwing, Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, and Aquaman are now some of my favorites with Spider-Man always holding a place in my heart forcing me to look back now and again to see if Marvel has finally Rebirthed... Maybe someday :/
