We've been hearing that Marvel Studios was in the process of developing a third Doctor Strange movie for quite some time, and it sounds like the project has now settled on a director.

In the latest edition of his newsletter, Jeff Sneider reports that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi has "all-but closed a deal" to return to helm the threequel.

In the Multiverse of Madness was met with pretty good reviews (73% on Rotten Tomatoes), and while it did prove to be somewhat divisive among MCU fans, it went on to take in over $950 million worldwide, meaning a third film was always a strong possibility.

Previous reports have claimed that Kevin Feige was eager to work with Raimi again, and the Evil Dead filmmaker was rumored to be the studio's top choice to direct Avengers: Secret Wars at one point.

Plot details for Doctor Strange 3 are still a mystery, but Charlize Theron's Clea did show up at the end of the last movie, making her return highly likely. There are rumors that the movie will adapt the "Time Runs Out" storyline from the comics, which would make sense given the events of the last film.

Benedict Cumberbatch was asked about potentially returning as the (former) Sorcerer Supreme in an interview earlier this year.

"I hope so. I would love to do another one. Doctor Strange is such a complex character and it feels like there is so much more to explore with him. He is such a brilliant character and I’m still having a wild time playing him."

How would you feel about Sam Raimi returning to direct Doctor Strange 3? Let us know in the comments section down below.

In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Michael Waldron.

The Doctor Strange sequel is now streaming on Disney+.

Sam Raimi is one of the better filmmakers they have working for them, so despite the 2nd movie not being everyone's top MCU movie, they can't really go wrong with him.

@TheJok3r - I would take Doctor Strange And The MultiVerse Of Madness over the likes of.

Eternals
Shang-Chi
Black Widow
Thor:Love And Thunder
Wakanda Forever
The Marvels
Ant-Man:Quantumania
She-Hulk
Echo
Agatha
The Falcon And The Winter Soldier
Moon Knight
Ms.Marvel
Secret Invasion

@marvel72 - Ok liberal. All are inferior to joker and joker 2.

@marvel72 - If Raimi is allowed full creative freedom (which he wasn't in the 2nd movie), then Dr. Strange 3 has the potential to be one of the best MCU movies ever made.

@marvel72 - It's on-par with Shang-Chi, Agatha and Moon Knight for me.

@marvel72 - it's okay to be a liberal, come to our side. We've got cookies, femboy twinks and better conditions for the worker. You want a 13th and 14th salary like the Europeans do? Jjjjjjjoin us

@Blergh - I haven't seen all of Shang-Chi, up to the scaffold fight, fell asleep and woke up for the final battle.

Moon Knight needed more Moon Knight and as for Agatha bored after first episode.

@marvel72 - I'd say give Shang-Chi another try, the Mandarin scenes later down the movie are pretty interesting.

As for Moon Knight, I agree that I missed the suit and wanted more scenes but it's okay to keep him a rare delight to be excited for.
I do think Agatha is an aquired taste, it has a lot of Charmed/Buffy vibes, maybe that's why it's harder to get into.

But that used to be what made Marvel great, variety appealing to different tastes. We still have the occiasional hit like D&W but I'm afraid the cosmic corner is feeling a bit empty now.

@marvel72 - you guys getting 13th and 14th salaries over there? Here in Austria it's a pretty neat thing
marvel72
marvel72 - 10/5/2024, 9:56 AM
@Blergh - Explain what 13th and 14th salaries are and I'll let you know.
Blergh
Blergh - 10/5/2024, 10:03 AM
@marvel72 - We get paid an additional wage at the beginning of summer and an additional salary in december. It was a worker-satisfaction policy from the 80s. So instead of paying every worker monthly, companies also have to pay two additional wages per worker each year.

I was dumbfounded when I heard this wasn't common place as a teen as well as public healthcare being essentially free.

@TheJok3r - giving Raimi full creative control is too much like "the right thing to do". My guess- Clea overshadows Strange the majority of the film. Strange is given one moment of bad badassery. Roll credit.

MOM proved it doesn't matter who you cast to direct, it won't save it. It's the writers they need to work on.
Blergh
Blergh - 10/5/2024, 9:34 AM
@HashTagSwagg - Let Raimi co-write from the beginning, then. Get Jac Schaefer and Raimi together, let Feige/Disney make their mandates beforehand and then let these two cook. Bring in Bruce to produce and we might be on the right track.

@HashTagSwagg - exactly. MoM was fun and i love Raimi, but on rewatch the dialogue is awful and there’s a lot of awkwardness - not in a good way. i think this script was affected by covid, right? hopefully they give Raimi time to better develop the script with the writer and he could deliver an MCU all timer.

Let Raimi cook. Best part of MoM was the Raimi touch/style. And Benny is just so damn fun to watch in this role.

Love Raimi, and just importantly Raimi loves Dr Strange. Lee/Ditko Dr Strange. So yes please.

As for MoM, I enjoy that film. I think I rewatch it more than the first Strange even.

We don't need another wanda film
Blergh
Blergh - 10/5/2024, 9:38 AM
@harryba11zack - disagreed, Wanda might have been badly written in MoM based on her experience in WandaVision (she should have been a well-meaning mess, feeling guilty for Westview but still craving her family. Perfect villainous motivation). But she's one of the most intriguing characters of the MCU and should be the one to carry the universe's torch after Tony/Steve are gone. I feel the fanbase has somewhat elected Strange, Wanda and Spidey as the new "trinity" (instead of Marvel insisting on Carol)

Blergh - 10/5/2024, 9:32 AM
Good! It was really easy to spot the studio mandates and Raimi's ideas, most of which were on point.
Give him the movie, let him co-write with Jac Schaefer and adhere to the mandates from the very beginning (instead of being added later in the project), bring in Campbell to produce and give him otherwise free reign.

We know Feige doesn't appreciate auteur directors who are fans (harder to control) but from I could gather he seems to have deep respect for Raimi, so he's probably the best director to let off the Marvel-leash.

I'm currently digging Agatha and love the mystery/horror-corner of the MCU, so bringing in Raimi, who is a fan of the comics and a fantastic director is perfect! Only movie I'd rather see him do is Blade.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/5/2024, 9:33 AM
They should give him Secret Wars! (shit they already gave that to the Russos)
They should give him Spider-Man! (damn they gave that to the Shang Chi guy).
Fine then. Doctor Strange again. I'll take it. I guess.

You know what though? Give him a Spidey Secret Wars tie-in movie.
Do 2 Spider-Man movies at the same time. One set on Battleworld with Tobey, Andrew and Tom and that way the other Spidey movie can stay grounded and urban and be set before all the big multiversal Doomsday stuff.

@WakandanQueen - if she even survives her own show, got a feeling the show is her come-uppance and somewhat redemptive tale. She grows to care for Billy and instead of taking the power of the road for herself she let's Billy make the wish Jack Sparrow-style. She's then taken by Death to be with her "forever"
