CONSTANTINE Reboot Officially In The Works At HBO Max With Guy Bolton Attached As Writer

Following yesterday's report that HBO Max is actively casting a diverse actor for the lead role, the streamer has found a writer to pen the pilot for Bad Robot's upcoming Constantine reboot.

While it was believed JJ Abrams' Bad Robot Productions may have been working on a new Constantine film, Deadline has now confirmed that they're actually in the early stages of developing a streaming series that is being described as a darker reboot compared to anything that's come before.

British novelist Guy Bolton has written the pilot and is expected to serve as head writer on the series, with the larger writers' room tentatively scheduled to open sometime in March.

DHD's story also confirms yesterday's report that HBO Max and Bad Robot are actively searching for a diverse actor to play the lead character, which is a considerable departure from the source material and from the versions previously played by Keanu Reeves (Constantine) and Matt Ryan (Constantine [NBC]; Legends of Tomorrow).

Bolton has written two books, The Pictures, which recently sold to David Mackenzie's Sigma Films (Hell or High WaterOutlaw King), and The Syndicate. He is also in the middle of developing another series titled The Croupier with Lookout Point and Sky (Gentleman Jack).

In addition to this latest Constantine reboot, Bad Robot has also announced a Justice League Dark series, and while it's still way too early to know for sure, it's probably not a stretch to assume the two shows may be linked in some capacity.

Matt Ryan will always be my favorite Constantine but I'm def excited for this.

@E4Nigma - It's a real shame NBC couldn't give his show as much creative freedom as they gave Hannibal. Mason Verger can cut his own face off, but John can't smoke a cigarette? Wtf.

I know. TV censorship is so stupid. There's so many cop shows on NBC about drug dealers, psychopaths, etc but a cigarette is where they draw the line lol.

It will be very hard to top Matt Ryan's Constantine, a character he is still playing.

The beginning of the END for DC comics and just gets worst daily.

does that mean DC will force Constantine out of LoT?
They did with the Suicide Squad

I hope a Riz Ahmed-type delivers.

Maybe a show will work better but I really wanted a JLD film.

@WakandanQueen - why not instead cast for a Matt Ryan-type?

@Blergh - I'd recommend a Dan Stevens-type personally but what do I know?

JJ Abrams on board to suck the life out of another property,
WB/HBOMax really have no clue.

@ARMUS - But it's JJ Abrams! He's Speilberg's special boy-child!

Who cares if he peaked with Lost Season 1?

His backstage pass means he can ruin any franchise he wants and we've all just gotta go to our warm places and wait for it to be over.

Really hope they go for an actor who looks like Sting as per his original description.
I'm not a fan of ethnicity swaps, always feel like it's Hollywood patting themselves on the back.
I like Riz Ahmed a lot, we share the same heritage and he was born 30 miles up the road from me, also he looks like my cousin, which should make me like him less.
I know they didn't say him specifically but a Riz-type.

Looking forward to a series regardless

@SimplyAz - And to be fair, John Constantine has ALWAYS been a diverse character since he's bisexual. But, I guess they want to differentiate from the Matt Ryan incarnation. I just hope it's more faithful to the Jaime Delano and Garth Ennis runs.

@soberchimera -

Definitely him being Bisexual opens a lot of story telling avenues.

I think we've had two interpretations that are different from each other, in terms of looks, so someone more akin to Ryan would be good

Y'all are acting like this is the first time Constantine has been race bent.

Constantine is pansexual. He was in a relationship with King Shark and had sex with a city.
