UPDATE: SDCC '12: FIREFLY 10 Yr Anniversary Special Panel Planned By Science Channel?

Browncoats across the world have been giddy with the prospect of a special 10 yr anniversary panel at this year's Comic-Con International in San Diego. It's not official yet but something is currently in the development stage. It's officially happening!

Nathan Fillion fans were a bit dismayed when news broke that ABC would not have a Castle panel at this years Comic-Con. However, there was a cryptic announcement from the convention organizers teasing that Fillion may still attend for something else.

Just recently news dropped that Fillion is confirmed for an unrelated panel and that Joss Whedon may also turn up for something else as well. Recently Executive Producer Tim Minear revealed that something is indeed in the works, when he was questioned about his Con attendance---

"Dunno yet. There is a ten year Firefly thing and I might if only for that. All depends!"

Which was quickly followed up with a retraction as he probably realized he'd unintentionally let a surprise slip out--

"I see that my response here has elicited a bit of a firestorm on the net -- just to clarify, I'm not actually even sure what this thing is yet or who is gonna be there. More to follow."

Whatever is being planned, we know Fillion will be attending Comic-Con regardless and there's rumblings that Whedon will also be in attendance (hopefully for some Marvel announcements). Might we see the full Firefly cast "assemble" at this year's convention and while we're at it, could there be some sort of announcement as well? It's typical at these anniversary celebrations to announce a special feature or project of some such. Stay tuned to CBM, we'll have daily coverage once things kick-off July 11th.

UPDATE: Word was dropped moments ago from THR that both Nathan and Joss will be attending a special 10 yr Firefly anniversary at this year's San Diego Comic-Con 2012 sponsored by Science Channel. Also attending will be Minear, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, Michael Fairman and the rest of the crew of the Serenity on Friday, July 13 at 12:30 p.m. in Ballroom 20. Never before seen footage and a "buzzworthy surprise" will be revealed.

that would be great to have a panel for that - I recently just got a few friends watching that show now that Filion is so popular with Castle. His old stuff is great too!

@marvel72
A lot of people say it is over-rated. Truthfully, a cancelled season of 12 episodes garnering such online and cult fame is destined to be over-rated, but when you do inevitably see it, please remember that it is very low-budget, and more of a western than anything else.

Just trying to set expectations right.

I wish Whedon would show up to announce a new film using some of that 'Avengers' money... dudes got serious pull now and I think a larger-budgeted reboot/sequel is EXACTLY what 'Firefly' needs. I say that because I dont think 'Serenity' or the show really nailed the style of the world in a grand science fiction setting...

I know it's probably considered blasphemy amongst Whedonites, but bottom line: they gotta dial down the western aspects a little. turns a lot of people off to the concept when the show feels all over the place, and every character being 'larger than life' and snarky. Just a bad combination. love the characters and setup tho. ahead of its time.

Wash: Psychic, though? That sounds like something out of science fiction.
Zoe: We live in a space ship, dear.
Wash: So?

They are big damn heroes, they can be as larger than life as they want. The western element was to show how the Alliance just gives colonists a settlement and leaves them on their way to fend for themselves. They literally have to build up from the ground. People who don't like westerns shouldn't see westerns.

@tainted- I actually love westerns, and sci-fi, and fantasy, and epic characters, but there's a reason this show/movie never caught on with the mainstream. (beyond a friday night time slot lol) And the "low budget sci fi western" is kind've a hard sell...

Example: Han Solo had the swagger and charm of Mal. there were colonists in Star Wars. But you obviously missed what I was saying... the western elements need to be re-tooled, not ditched..

examples of what I'm talking about: terrible fiddle soundtrack throughout, terrible poorly acted southern accents on some, and the old timey dialogue just randomly popping in sometimes for comedy or dramatic effect.

Like I said. Good show overall, just gotta even it self out a little...

Sounds cool. Could the surprise be a new Firefly series? Possibly...

I've been at peace with the fact that Firefly is dead for a long time, now.
I told myself, "Look, this is never going to happen. Joss Whedon just doesn't have any swing. Everything he does is shat upon. The only way this could ever happen is if he suddenly had more power than everyone in Hollywood except James Cameron."
The gods have heard us. You can't take the sky from them and you can't take the sky from me.

Just recently got through watching the series and Serenity. I like the show a lot, but I didn't think Serenity was that good. It lacked the fun of the show. Anyway, not sure if the announcement will be that big of a deal, but I think an animated continuation could be awesome if they could find the right place for it.

The only reason I didn't watch Firefly when it originally aired was it being up against the last season of Farscape and I did not have a DVR yet.

Well Netflix has been buying up every cult show they can get their hands on so...???

one of the best shows ever made, and like Arrested Development, cut short of what could have been a great 6 or more year run

BIGBMH,
I hadn't thought of that, but an animated series actually makes sense, and it would solve most (if not all) the problems that got Firefly cancelled. Great idea!
