DC Studios Boss James Gunn Has Had Input On 2023 DC Movies; Reveals When New DCU Slate Begins

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that he and Peter Safran have given notes on next year's DC Comics movies, revealing when the official DCU slate actually begins. Read on for further details...

There's a lot of intrigue surrounding what James Gunn has planned for the DCU alongside Peter Safran, with DC Studios clearly established to put this franchise back on the right track.

While The Suicide Squad director has made it clear they're currently in the midst of putting together a new slate of interconnected film, TV, and video game projects, there are still some leftovers from the "DCEU" era to get through in 2023. Those include Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

After recently hyping up the new Blue Beetle poster on Instagram, Gunn started answering some fan questions about the DCU's future. He started by revealing, "Peter and I will help to guide the already filmed projects for the next year, but the new slate won’t start until after Aquaman 2."

So, the DCU slate officially kicks off in 2024. That's exciting, as is the fact that both Gunn and Safran have been "giving notes" on the remaining DCEU movies.

Seeing as leaks have confirmed that both The Flash and the Aquaman sequel were going to lay the groundwork for a Crisis on Infinite Earths adaptation, we're guessing this input from the DC Studios heads may have resulted in the removal of those elements. After all, they have their own ideas for this shared world and probably don't want to be beholden to past concepts.

While time will tell on that front, Gunn also said, "We’re excited to be shepherding the great films made before we arrived & working hard to create an extraordinary, wondrous, [and] unique DCU beyond that."

Needless to say, it finally feels like this franchise is in safe hands and, like Gunn, we're excited about the future. As for when we'll learn what that DCU slate looks like, we'd bet on it being well into 2023.

@GhostDog - I’m sure they have but I highly doubt he’ll say anything until The Flash is out

I just want for these DC characters what Reeve’s is doing for Batman. I want Superman to receive that type of love and care.

@PlusUltra - agree if you mean on the big screen. Superman & Lois, especially that first season, is some of my favorite live-action Superman out there

@TheFireForce - yeah static is underrated popular character he needs recognition especially with Hollywood going female black path for some movies I’m not complaining most movies I see main characters are white especially for comic movies except black panther

I wonder what the first official Dcu film will be?🤔

Will Gunn direct it or at the very least write it?

We should know soon😎

@AmazingFILMporg - Green Lantern would make the most sense. Especially if it's set outside of Earth. This way they don't have to worry about Earth continuity if they decide to make Batman or Superman a prequel to Green Lantern or if one of the heroes are already active on Earth.

@AmazingFILMporg - Well, Black Adam was actually a reboot of the DCU and look at how well that went!

@SonOfAGif - Anything non earth based at this point is D.O.A., it just can't work without a more solid belief in the universe.

“Probably don’t want to be beholden to past concepts”…. And this is why Batgirl was cancelled. What Hamada was doing with the characters, was altering/erasing/replacing all of the “Snyderverse” heroes. One of the stupidest ideas was to have Michael Keaton be THE Batman moving forward. Wayyyy too old.

Side-note: Josh’s writing continues to be cringey run-on sentences. At least he’s “finally excited” for DC movies. We all know it’s just because James Gunn has worked in the MCU though 😂

If they said that shows, cartoons, movies, and games will all connect I imagine that supports a Crisis on Infinite Earths movie

Same morons telling James he has nothing to do with the upcoming movies are the ones that keep trying to convince themselves that whatever visual tone is in honor of their lord and savior.

Yes, the usage of hyperbolic language here is deliberate.

Makes sense. My question is though we can expect the slate/plans to be revealed. My guess is SDCC next year, but I could be wrong.

Also, wonder if they'll adapt the Phase-model Marvel has. If so, I would say Man of Steel to Justice League is Phase 1, and Aquaman to Aquaman 2 is Phase 2.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/5/2022, 11:22 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I would say Shazam 2, Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman 2 are Phase 0 and Phase 1 begins in in 2024.

With what? I don't know.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/5/2022, 11:30 AM
@ObserverIO - I kinda hope it's Static, but that won't probably be it. Otherwise maybe Wonder Woman 3?
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 12/5/2022, 11:36 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Or a Wonder Woman 2 (since everyone seems to have forgotten/repressed Wonder Woman 1984).

I don't know if I could sit through another Gal Gadot Wonder Woman movie, I'll be honest with you.

If this new DCU is just old DCEU, I'll puke out my gorram brain.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 12/5/2022, 3:05 PM
@ObserverIO - think they'll do another Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot, just as I expect another Aquaman with Jason Mamoa.

I'd prefer a Superman movie with Cavill though, but either way I don't expect a ''new'' DCU
