James Gunn Acknowledges Fan Campaigns But Says DCU Future Is About Delivering "Biggest Story Ever Told"

DC Studios CEO James Gunn has acknowledged both the #ReleaseTheAyerCut and #SaveLegendsOfTomorrow movements, but is looking to the future for what sounds like a massive, overarching DCU storyline...

Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has started his job as the co-CEO of DC Studios, and he took the time this weekend to address fans.

Both #ReleaseTheAyerCut and #SaveLegendsOfTomorrow have trended worldwide over the past couple of days, with supporters of both movements making their feelings known. The latter hashtag obviously refers to The CW's Legends of Tomorrow, which was cancelled earlier this year, while the former was shared by those hoping to see David Ayer's director's cut of 2016's Suicide Squad.

Letting fans know that both he and fellow co-CEO Peter Safran have taken note of these requests, Gunn also made it clear that they're focused on the DCU's future

"[All] our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects," the filmmaker teased, concluding by saying, "We can’t wait to reveal more."

Reading through Gunn's Tweets, it's clear that there are currently no plans to release a slightly different version of a movie that came out over six years ago or to resurrect a cancelled TV series which was declining rapidly in viewership before the plug was pulled (with The CW moving on from the Arrowverse, it's hard to say where the show could even go).

However, he and Safran are clearly plotting a massive, overarching story that looks set to play out on big and small screens over the next few years, and that's very exciting. Could this be Crisis on Infinite Earths, a storyline we know Walter Hamada was looking to build towards before the Warner Bros./Discovery merger?

It's possible, but the biggest takeaway here is that there's finally a plan in place for the DCU. We may see some of those Task Force X or Legends characters factor into that, but for now, Gunn and Safran are busy planning "the Biggest Story Ever Told" over at DC Studios...

Seems to me that It’ll all build to some form of Crisis, Marvel are doing multiverse stuff at the moment but DC in my mind have always been the company that does the big multiversal events. I mean they’ve already got Routh looking perfect as KC superman in the tv Crisis.

Lol he's opening up the door to be harassed by the SnyderCucks.

Good luck Gunn, I'm rooting for you!

@ClungesForever - Yeah, he really is. But Snyder fans need to just be happy that as of now it doesn't look like Gunn is going to just hard reboot everything and start fresh.

They should be happy that they are at least getting all the same actors continuing in these roles, even if they aren't reviving Snyder's broken ass storyline that he had planned. And who knows, we probably will see Darkseid's story pick back up at some point. JL is canon so it would be weird to just leave all that hanging.

So really, the only thing that feels dead from the Snyderverse is the rest of JL trilogy and the post apocalyptic future storyline. They should be happy the world and characters are at least still intact.

@CorndogBurglar - Even if they don’t complete Snyder’s exact plan (which sounded needlessly grim and convoluted, TBH), it would be nice to see that version of Apokolips and Darkseid again and maybe get some resolution on all the Knightmare stuff.

@CorndogBurglar - you're right but sadly the cult side of Snyder's fans don't care about DC. They care about Snyder, they have been actively bashing any DC movie Snyder's cast has been in since he got fired.

Let’s do this!

@PlusUltra - still not a fan seeing Harley in this line up.

@Arthorious - It never used to sit well with me either but I’ve come round to it. I think what we have to learn to appreciate is that Harley is for the same reason the rest are, because readers put her there. Batman wouldn’t be there if readers didn’t take to the character, and neither would Harley.

"Into this new universe"

New universe!

Oh deary my.. Am I actually, genuinely excited about the future of DC?
My goodness. Thank you, James Gunn, I thought that love had died in me.
Feels good to feel positive about DC for once.

(I doubt they're thinking Crisis on Infinite Earths, that's like a big finale before you reboot. This is the beginning not the end. Thank god the Walter Hamada era of premature ejaculation is over).

Still can't believe James Gunn is the CEO. Sigh.

At least we'll always have the DCAU. That will never not be awesome.

@TheManWithoutFear - I mean… the killing joke

@Twenty23Three - Is that in the DCAU? I didn't know that. I'm talking about the Bruce Timm, Paul Dini verse. From Superman:TAS to Batman Beyond.

@TheManWithoutFear - I think if I remember at the time since it was Bruce Timm doing it they said it took place in the same universe but, they’ve probably rightly distanced it from that now

@Twenty23Three - i didn't know, never saw it. Maybe i should rethink my stance on the DCAU haha.

I always wanted an animated adaptation of Knightfall. When is that going to happen.
Twenty23Three
Twenty23Three - 11/7/2022, 9:18 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - can’t be far off, every second animation they do is Batman. Pretty sure they’ve got Jensen Ackles on retainer to voice him nowadays haha
ObserverIO

@Twenty23Three - The only thing people didn't like about it was Batgirl and Batman having a sexual relationship, and that was already canon to the DCAU. Batgirl even aborted Bruce Wayne's child at one point, without telling Dick. So, that's really no reason to strike Killing Joke from canon.

The fact that Barbara was crippled in the film might conflict with established DCAU continuity, but we do see her getting better by the end and if it follows the trajectory of the comics, she would be back on her feet and into the Batgirl costume in no time.
