J.J. Abrams On Whether He's Set To Direct Any Of The DC Comics Projects Bad Robot Is Working On

J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company is working with Warner Bros. on several upcoming DC Comics projects, but does the Star Wars filmmaker have any interest in directing any of them?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker J.J. Abrams is working on several DC Comics projects at Warner Bros. via his Bad Robot production company as part of his huge 2019 deal with WarnerMedia, and a lot of fans are wondering if he'll also wind up taking the helm of one of them.

We recently learned that he won't be directing the new Ta-Nehisi Coates-penned Superman movie, and it doesn't sound like he has much interest in stepping behind the camera for Justice League Dark, Zattana, or any other project that doesn't stem from an original idea.

“Well, I'll say that the opportunity to get to work on any pre-existing franchise is definitely a double-edged sword," said Abrams when asked about the possibility of directing as well as producing any of the DC Comics properties he's involved with during an interview with Collider. "And while I'm incredibly grateful and proud to have been involved in the projects, of course, all I see is what things could have been and what we might have done."

The filmmaker goes on to talk about the responsibility that comes with being "a temporary custodian of a project," and while he doesn't outright say that he has no intention of helming a DC Comics adaptation, he does suggest that his next gig as director will be an original IP.

"The few things that I'm working on now, as a writer, are original ideas. I just feel, as a director, I really would love to have my next projects be things that didn't pre-exist me necessarily."

Abrams wrote upcoming original HBO series Demimonde, but there's no word on what his next big-screen directorial venture might be. Are you disappointed that he most likely won't be helming any of the planned Bad Robot-produced DC Comics films? Let us know in the comments.

Good for him. I really like JJ Abrams but he’s gotten bogged down in doing big franchise films for pre-existing material. Let him take more cracks at original content.

"the opportunity to get to work on any pre-existing franchise is definitely a double-edged sword"

Why does it sound like he is very aware of the toxic fans that could jump him if he does take the opportunity?

Anyway, I don't mind him not directing. Not really a fan of his style. His writing is good though, think he really understands how to structure story and characters.

@bkmeijer - lol, because there are a lot of fans that blame him for The Rise of Skywalker being so bad.

@CorndogBurglar - and I think a lot of Star Trek fans weren't fans of his take on the franchise either

Good, Hollywood need more original projects; not everything needs to be a sequel, reboot and/or remake.

Cool. I'm all for originality. With that being said, if he could give us another Star Trek movie as good as the first one he did I'd be all for it.

Just got to say, despite how bad it has become, he did revive Star Trek after the failure of Enterprise and Nemesis

I'm all for the POEC Supermam movie. It's just not the right time . Man of Steel still seems fresh in the memory...especially with his mind-blowing appearance in ZSJL. Wait for a good few years and do a total reboot.
