Mike Flanagan, who has established himself as one of the most consistent and celebrated horror directors working today, has weighed in on the rumors that he might be in talks with DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran about potentially helming a project in the DCU.

Back in March of last year, Deadline reported that Flanagan had approached the studio with an idea for a solo Clayface feature. Details were few and far between, but it was said that "the character wouldn't be depicted as a villain" in the pitch.

Flanagan has been vocal about wanting to be involved in a Clayface project in the past, describing his hypothetical take as a “standalone horror/thriller/tragedy.”

WB weren't interested at the time, but rumors have persisted that The Fall of the House of Usher director has maintained discussions with Gunn and Safran. We're not sure if this is accurate, but Flanagan did seem to choose his words carefully when asked about the reports during a panel at the Toronto FanExpo.

“I’ve always been a huge fan of James Gunn as a person and filmmaker, and that is a universe I would absolutely love to be a part of.”

Deadline's report also mentioned that Clayface was expected to be "a big addition" to Matt Reeves' The Batman - Part II, although they also noted that nothing is set in stone just yet as the script is "constantly changing."

We have no idea how a character like Clayface would factor into Reeves' relatively grounded interpretation of the Dark Knight's world, but we assume his shape-shifting abilities would be dropped and Basil Karlo (if that's who they go with) would be significantly reimagined.

Plot details for the sequel have remained a well-kept secret, so we have no idea if Clayface is still going to feature.

As for Flanagan, there are numerous other characters he'd be a perfect fit for once the DCU moves further into and beyond its "Gods and Monsters" phase, including the likes of John Constantine, Deadman, or a Justice League Dark team-up movie.

I mean , he was recently spotted with Peter Safran and Kumail Nanjiani (who is rumored to be Booster Gold) at the Olympics so I feel like something might be in the works…

His Clayface take sounds cool as an “Elseworlds” esque project like Joker..

However, if he is to do a DCU movie or show then I think Swamp Thing or Etrigan could work.

Hell , just give him the JLD corner of that universe haha!!.

What the hell would even a grounded clayface be? An actor with a deformed face whose really good at makeup or masks or something?

@SATW42 - yeah or they could just go with the original design & take..

Even something like how Caped Crusader did which was a mix of both.

THE BATMAN 2 is never happening..this is the same relentless "lying to save face" scenario that Disney was engaged in durring The Last Jedi fiasco, WARNERS like DISNEY before them dont want to admit that they made a major mistake, so they just keep pretending that the film was warmly received by general audiences and hardcore fans alike, when that wasn't the case at all, prompting them to keep hyping up
the next chapter in a already failed attempt at a franchise,(the promotion of Rian Johnsons never happening Star Wars Trillogy is a perfect example of this mindset)

It's like a form of Subliminal Gaslighting. Pretty sad.

@DaHULK2000 - Wait, what? I'm not saying that Everybody loved it, but it was definitely well received. I believe it actually did better at the box office than Batman Begins. Your prefrence is an entirely different thing - and completely valid. The sequel will definitely happen.

@DaHULK2000 - Im not sure that its true. It may be true to you, but there are a lot of people who really liked that film and are looking forward to a followup. It is taking an awful long time for a sequel, but I would be more surprised if it didnt happen.

@Patient2670 - Yes cuz, as the saying goes, Batman. Batman could shovel shite for 2 hours. Doesn't matter. Batman. BvS was horrible for some, Martha, etc. But Batman himself, outside of that, doing Batman things...fine. Cuz Batman. The fact that WB had the balls to acknowledge they could get away with this is funny in and of itself. Even Sony hasn't figure this out, let's hope they don't. I have my opinions, but I'll keep my secrets for now and just say I agree, the sequel is definitely happening.

@Shivermetimbers - I think a big sign that this promotion for the Batman 2 is complete hogwash is the fact is that Warners is already developing another Batman franchise in spite of this one (brave and the bold) over saturation is a thing, and these companies are definitely conscious of it,there not going to have two diffent actors playing Batman at the same time with potentially only a year or two between this production and then that one..its overkill.and very Risky if the first released production is badly or even mildly received before the next one is released not long afterwards, potentially killing it due to the bad and orlukewarm perception of the previous production.

The Batman not being a hit with fans is hardly debatable..it made what's considered "suckerbucks" meaning fans were conned and suckered in to going to see this due to the inherent strength of the Batman brand, and due to the overall sentiment of people wanting to resume their previous pastimes before the covid lockdowns occurred..it made money because it was a convenient distraction..not because it was some sort of cultural touchstone that people had to be apart of..big difference

Patient2670 - 8/26/2024, 2:24 PM
@The1st - So, what you're saying is that people like and want to see Batman. Warner Bros sees the value in this and thus keeps making Batman projects. Am I understanding your comment correctly? Are you condemning a corporation for turning a profit on relatively low risk products that people want?

@DaHULK2000 - You're forgetting to factor in one important fact: David Zaslav is an idiot.

David Zaslav wants James Gunn and Peter Safran to fix DC by rebooting it into one cohesive and focused universe. To make more money out of it.

But he also has inherited a contract with Matt Reeves (to make more movies and spin-offs set in a universe controlled by Matt Reeves) which he would have to pay a lot of money to get out of.

So he thinks 'Good! James Gunn's gonna make me money and I've saved money by letting Reeves make his movies and maybe they'll make money too!'

It makes sense to him right now. It won't do later when he realizes that he's stopped James Ginn from being able to do the main job that he wanted him to do and that a small amount of money would have fixed this right at the start.

@DaHULK2000 - With a budget of 200 million dollars and earnings of 772.25 million, debuting at #1 at the box office, and attracting 4.1 million viewers in its first week on Max—the highest ever for any platform—alongside a 7.8 IMDB score, an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score, and an impressive 87% viewer rating, labeling the movie a 'Major Mistake' would be a grossly inaccurate statement.

@DaHULK2000 - Everything I typed is easily verifiable from each of the sources named for the stats. But since it seems you think somehow your feelings dictate reality, there is little hope in ever convincing you otherwise, I mean most people who make stuff up on the internet at least try to check first before they are called out on their BS. But you didn't. you just threw a whole bunch of absolute nonsense into the wind. Well at least the comment is there in case anyone else wants to look all of those up for themselves, or just want proof to the overwhelming sense of disregard for truth you seem to live by.

@Saoboath - I just don't place my faith and hopes into statistics that I can't verify for myself, there's nothing wrong with holding a level of skepticism over what presented to us by these corporations when they continually go out there way to insult the intelligence of the average consumer of there products on every level, the sense of blind trust and entitlement that you have in regards to these conglomerates is the exact thing that enables them to lie to you as effectively as they do. The correct discernment of plainly observable fact that comes with thinking criticaly is why I'm able to come to the conclusions that I do..meanwhile you blindly just trust people and organizations that have a vested financial interest in lying to you. Your a fool.
