Marvel Studios Boss Kevin Feige Says DCU Is In "Good Hands" With GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Director James Gunn

When Disney fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn from the MCU after some offensive jokes from the past resurfaced on social media, Warner Bros. wasted no time in scooping up the filmmaker.

With that, he was tapped to write and direct The Suicide Squad, though the House of Mouse eventually saw the error of its ways and re-hired Gunn. After helming The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and various tie-in material for Disney Parks, his future lies in the DCU as DC Studios co-CEO alongside Peter Safran.

As well as overseeing upcoming projects, he's written Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy, with the expectation being that he will also direct the latter.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked to share his thoughts on Gunn making the leap to the DCU.

"[The conversation] was not dissimilar to when we talked about him doing The Suicide Squad. I said, 'That's awesome, and I can't wait to see it.' I've never been shy about loving those characters," he explains. "I had Superman posters all over my walls in my childhood bedroom, and I went to work for the Donners, [film producers] Richard Donner and Lauren Shuler Donner, because of Superman."

"The notion of those characters being in such good hands with James is exciting, and it's very cool - after he finishes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, of course. [Laughs]"

With critics harsher than ever towards Marvel Studios' output, now is a good time for DC Studios to step up and start offering an alternative form of superhero storytelling. The pressure is on Gunn to deliver, though he's certainly had ample opportunity to learn from Feige over the years.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5. Superman: Legacy, meanwhile, has been dated for July 11, 2025.

We'll see. His adolescent-style humor seems to be ingrained in everything he touches. I wasn't really impressed with The Suicide Squad. And wasn't he involved in some creepy Superman alter ego movie? Hopefully WB isn't just hitching all their reins onto this one director's wagon again only to wind up disillusioned years later...again.

@Super12 - The "creepy super man alter ego movie" was pretty awesome lol you should watch it its horror movie of what would happen if a kid with superman's powers was evil. He was the producer though not the director

@Super12 - WB we’re foolish to trust Zack 100% but they went into full on panic mode by just throwing anything and everything at the wall. I hope they don’t do that either.

Feige had a maturity level tha some of the users on this site could use. While I am sure head to head he would like Marvel flicks to be successful more than DCU, I better he had genuinely wanted SC movies to be good and successful.

Feige is a classy guy. He appreciates what Gunn brought to the MCU.

I hope Gunn is very successful with the DCU. But Superman MUST be great. If it's not and Gunn fills it with GotG type humor, things might get bad at WB fast. His Supergirl better be damn good too. He needs 2 big hits right out of the box.

I wish I had a boss like that…. [frick], if I went off to run another company I’m sure my exbosses would try to convince the world I sacrifice goats and worship Trigon.

I think Gunn knows and respects Superman better than Snyder. I think he'll give us something good.

There is nothing in Gunn's body of work that would make me think he is the best person for this job. Not only was Gunn WB's fourth choice but he was not even put in charge outright. He is not even allowed to bother Matt Reeves or Todd Phillips and must allow them to do their own thing despite promises of a unified DC universe.

@Forthas - those movies made a ton of money, of course WB wouldn’t want anyone to mess with those films regardless of whoever was in charge of the DCU.
