Warner Bros. Discovery Reportedly Has Bigger Problems Than David Zaslav's Search For A DC Films Boss

Recently-appointed Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav is still hoping to find his "Kevin Feige-like" individual to take over the DC Films/TV divisions and usher in a new era for DC Comics-based content. The search is not going well, but a new report indicates that the heavily-indebted studio may soon have bigger problems to contend with.

According to THR, WBD is still "grappling with that heavy debt load and skeptical investors," with concerns being raised about Zaslav's leadership style. Although no negotiations can happen until April 2024, many insiders believe that another merger deal is inevitable, and Comcast’s (remember them?) Brian Roberts is looking like the most likely candidate to propose combining NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Discovery.

Though nothing is set in stone, another merger and further restructuring of the company would obviously throw Zaslav's proposed "10-year plan" for the DCEU into disarray.

As for the DC gig, it sounds like Zaslav has had so much trouble filling the position because the prospect of competing with Marvel Studios and developing a real, cohesive shared movie/TV universe is seen as a near-impossible task given the current state of the DCEU.

“Zaslav doesn’t know what he doesn’t know,” one leading talent rep tells the trade. “That’s scary. And you’re always going to be compared to Marvel. It’s unfair. By the time they were being judged, it was working. It’s the exact opposite at Warner. It’s rough all around. Who the [frick] would want that job?”

As things stand, it seems likely that acting division heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy "will end up running the thing by default." The pair are said to be "talent-friendly, decisive and a vast improvement from when the studio sat under AT&T and Jason Kilar," so they might be Zaslav's best option - providing he can convince them to officially take the job!

@AmazingFILMporg -

seems like WB have no clue when it comes to dc related movies;
one BIG example is the HUGE mistake they did when appointed zack snyder at the helm of the dc universe,
a complete dumpster fire !
as of now, they are dealing with the consequences of THOSE actions.

it might take a while to reboot/erase that mistake.

@Equivocal - All the people who were responsible for Snyder being put in the position of overseeing the DCEU are long since gone…The problem is that everybody who comes in to “fix” the DCEU brings their own stupid decision making into the mix…That’s why they were looking for their “Feige”…At this point it’s a lost cause…

Man, 2013-2016 me was so excited for the future of DC movies. They truly do just need a hard reboot at this point.

@r4dagast - My excitement for the future of DC movies was huge pre-MoS and all but flatlined with the BvS announcement. The thing that mainly kept my spirits up then was Suicide Squad, which ended up being one of the worst CBMs I've seen.

Since then the height of my DCEU excitement has been 'cautiously optimistic for individual projects'.

Selling to Comcast makes so much sense. A lot of their moves up to this point don’t seem like the moves one would make and expect long term success as a prestigious movie studio. But they do feel like moves Richard Gere would make before he met Vivian.

Just pawn of DC. There's probably someone like Comcast out there willing to buy it. Two birds, one stone I guess.

Also, why April 2024? Can't make anything of ''complicated structure of that merger''

Just amazing how much of a mess WB is. Kind of surprising that such an iconic company has so much disfunction, disarray, incompetence, inaction, etc behind the scenes. On the exterior the company is shiny and captivating, but when you open the doors you find the entire inside is on fire with bags of dog shit scattered about and spaghetti falling from the walls.

@HulkisHoly - Man Of Steel was alright when you compare it to other movies in the DCEU,Batman V.Superman:Dawn Of Justice had a few good scenes.

Justice League The Snyder Cut is superior to the theatrical cut.

MOS was pretty good.
SS was abysmal
BVS was absolutely mind boggling abysmal creatively.
And ZS JL is 4/10 which is not much better than Josstice League which is 1/10.
