DEADPOOL 2 Enlists JOHN WICK Composer Tyler Bates To Replace Junkie XL

It's been nearly a year since Junkie XL left the Deadpool sequel and it finally looks like director David Leitch has found his replacement in Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick composer Tyler Bates!

Last year, following Tim Miller's shocking departure from the Deadpool sequel, composer Junkie XL (aka Tom Holkenborg) decided to also leave the project out of solidarity to Miller, which left the studio with a pretty big hole to fill, but luckily, they still had plenty of time to find the right man for the job.

With the film exactly seven months out, Film Music Reporter has learned that 20th Century Fox has tapped Tyler Bates to score the highly anticipated sequel, a move that will reunite him with his John Wick and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch, who is helming Deadpool's second live-action outing.

Ryan Reynolds is headlining the feature with a supporting cast that contains Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić, Jack Kesy, Karan Soni, and Shioli Kutsuna. Production recently wrapped with several members of the cast and crew sharing a series of photos.

Bates is also well-known for scoring Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for Marvel Studios and several Zack Snyder films, including 300, Watchmen, and Sucker Punch. His work can be heard next in the upcoming Netflix series Marvel's The Punisher.

Deadpool 2 is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Deadpool, distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is intended to be the twelfth installment in the X-Men film series, and a sequel to the 2016 film Deadpool.

Deadpool 2 features:
Director: David Leitch
Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool
Morena Baccarin as Vanessa
T.J. Miller as Weasel
Leslie Uggams as Blind Al
Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead
Stefan Kapičić as Colossus
Zazie Beetz as Neena Thurman/Domino

@JoeMomma29 - a new director, composer might actually help this project. Deadpool is always fresh and unexpected, id actually like to see a new director and team take the third film also and have a unique, exciting trilogy

He also did the soundtrack for Samurai Jack Season 5. That soundtrack was pretty good.

Does that mean 75% of the score going to be 80s hits remixed edition?

Love his John Wick score. That theme in particular. Plus, the score for the first Guardians is one of the rare memorable MCU scores. The main Guardians theme and Groot’s theme being the standouts.

@DTor91 - I need to rematch that movie. Really liked it, but I really don't remember the score. I'm sure he'll do just fine though.

@MrDandy - Yeah it didn’t really stick with me until after watching it a couple times. But those two themes pop up several times in the most important moments.

Unpopular Opinion Time:

Junkie XL scores aren't all that.

@solargeknowles - I've only enjoyed his MAD MAX work

@solargeknowles - His Mad Max is the most memorable one for me. Apart from that, I've found that his music is good-great DURING the movie, but not very memorable afterwards

@BlackBeltJones -

His style worked for Fury Road, and a bit less for Deadpool. His theme for Diana is pure hype, catchy, but not as "epic" as many like to make it out to be.

It's just repeatitive and easily memorable, and I'm glad he's being replaced, both in this and in JL.

@OedipusGrex - True it is repetitive

@solargeknowles - Brothers in Arms is a great track from one of my favourite scores! But Junkie XL has been hit and miss.

I love his work on the Guardians' films, and - ... he's working on The Punisher too?!

Great news!
