It Doesn't Sound Like DEADPOOL 2 Will Take FANTASTIC FOUR 2's 2017 Release; Update On X-FORCE

Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick talk here about plans for Cable, why it's highly unlikely the sequel will take Fantastic Four 2's 2017 release date, and which MCU character they want.

HeyUGuys recently had the chance to catch up with Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to talk about the movie, and they managed to get some very interesting details on the sequel. Unfortunately, the interview took place before the news of a follow-up hit, but it doesn't sound as if they'll be able to get the screenplay finished in time for it to be released in the slot currently held by Fantastic Four 2. "We hope that it doesn’t take Fantastic Four’s release date because that’s awfully, awfully soon," Reese confessed. "We like to take our time, we’re lazy screenwriters." Wernick however added that they're at least open to the idea, but next June definitely feels like a rush. "Look, that’s entirely above our heads, but we’ll write the very best screenplay we can write if we’re fortunate enough to get that sequel, and we’ll write it as quickly as they tell us we need to write it. When they say jump, we say how high."

Asked about incorporating well-known Deadpool supporting characters like Cable and Siryn, Reese teased: "Yes, absolutely. I think those are characters who are near and dear to Deadpool fan’s hearts and characters we would like to explore down the line if we’re so fortunate to have sequels. Cable is one that we will absolutely visit if we’re allowed to keep moving forward with multiple movies. We’ve always wanted to honour the fans first, so the fan’s favourite characters, that mean a lot to them, we will take a long, hard look at moving forward." Inevitably, talk then turned to X-Force, and that too is something the screenwriting duo are just as interesting in making a reality as Ryan Reynolds. "Getting in to more of an ensemble piece is something we would cherish," Wernick teased. "X-Force is beloved and we love it, and Deadpool is centric to that world, and we’d love to bring an X-Force movie into the X Universe."

Finally, they were quizzed about which Marvel Cinematic Universe character they'd like to use if it was possible, and it turns out that they have their sights set on a certain Jade Giant. "We can’t, but that’s a rights issue because Fox only have the rights to Fantastic Four and X-Men, but I would love to see the Hulk against Deadpool, because it would be really fun to see Deadpool having to use his agility and his silliness and skills to overcome just brute force," said Wernick. "Maybe we can figure out another way to do that with another character in the X-Men universe, but I would love to see him square up against the Hulk, it would be hilarious." Deadpool 2 is more than likely a 2018 release, the same year they release New Mutants so they can keep their current two films a year schedule.

Do we keep forgetting Kingsman 2 (a Fox CBM) basically already took F4-2's release date by coming out a week before it? It's a stupid question to ask them if Deadpool 2 is now taking the date held by F4-2.

My guess is Fantastic Four 2's date will now go to Gambit.

Why don't they just use Sasquatch instead? They're both Canadian.

@soberchimera - I think Alpha Flight are actually still with Marvel, but what about Blob or Juggernaut or Onslaught?

These Fox guys don't even know what properties they hold, they just jealously want to [frick] up everyone else's things.

@soberchimera - Fox doesn't own the rights to Alpha Flight. Disney trademarked that team back in June 2014. I doubt Fox has access to any of the non-mutant characters on Alpha Flight. Northstar and Aurora, being mutants, are probably the only ones Fox can use. However, those characters might exist in the same gray area between Fox and Marvel like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
