As Movies Like DEADPOOL 3 And VENOM 3 Pause Production, Kevin Feige Issues Statement On SAG-AFTRA Strike

Deadpool 3 has indeed halted production as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike, as has Venom 3! As well as an update on those, we have comments from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige on what's happening...

The Hollywood Reporter has shared an update on which upcoming movies have been forced to pause production as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike and, as expected, work has come to a halt on both Deadpool 3 and Venom 3.

The latter is a Sony Pictures title, of course, but should the strike last for the next several months...well, 2024 won't be anywhere near as exciting as it currently looks.

Studios knew this was coming and we've heard that a handful of summer blockbusters shot interviews at the end of June because they knew premieres and junkets would soon be off the table The trade even notes that some productions made sure to shoot key scenes with actors they realised would be unavailable if a strike happened as soon as production started.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D'Esposito sent an email to staff yesterday, offering some insights into how they feel about the strike.

"We recognize how much you've all done on your specific projects and it’s disappointing when carefully laid plans have to shift, but constant change is the nature of the production business," they said, "and our teams are no stranger to unexpected challenges and rising to meet them."

"We deeply appreciate all your efforts to make the best of the situation, and we can all hope that a new agreement will be finalized soon so we can resume the great work we have in process."

Those are words which have clearly been chosen carefully, though there's already some backlash aimed at the decision to use the word "disappointing." Ultimately, Feige and D'Esposito are studio heads, so they're going to have extremely different outlooks compared to the actors and writers on strike.

Deadpool 3 is currently set to be released in theaters on May 4, 2024, a date which seemed oddly optimistic even before these strikes began. As for Venom 3, that's expected to hit theaters next Fall and may or may not hit that target depending on how much work still needs to be done.

Stay tuned for updates.

Feige gets a lot of credit but I almost feel like he's underrated even. Make Mine Marvel.

@TheManWithoutFear - post the dream team he's consistently put out bad content. I'd argue he's overrated. Would love to be proven otherwise.

@McMurdo - I'd argue that when someone is mandated to double or triple their production in the same time frame that their results will naturally suffer. I don't know about you but I'm 110% sure Feige was not the one who decided he should be putting out 6-7 MCU projects per year.

While the blame is indeed ultimately on his shoulders, I can't imagine anyone not suffering a decline in quality given his same situation.

@McMurdo - Context is King. If it ever came to a point where they fired Feige or he left under his own accord the next person in charge would face the same issues I pointed out and fared no better. As a Yankee fan I know I can want the manager fired but it will change nothing if the GM and owner don't change their mentality.

It's nice that they kept it diplomatic. It feels like the executives have been going ballistic about the strikes.

Deadpool 3 might luck out with the delay and get adlibbing back in play if both strikes end at around the same time.

I mean it is disappointing so I wouldn't hold it against Feige I think he gave a great response.

SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 7/14/2023, 4:06 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Bob Iger is to Disney as what Scott Kirby is to United Airlines. The two want immediate returns with absolutely no type of patience for building the brand. They focus on layoffs and cost cutting instead of innovation and cost cutting executive salaries.

@tvor03 - It's Capitalism in a nut shell. A money hungry CEO comes in, cleans house, leaves with a massive bonus, and the company gets left in shambles for a buyout.

@SonOfAGif - that’s not capitalism. It’s just bad leadership.
cham2119

@tvor03 - that actually is fundamentally capitalist maximizing short term gains is always the goal regardless of the consistency of the product
tvor03
tvor03 - 7/15/2023, 2:19 PM
@cham2119 - once again, only if you have bad leadership. I’m pretty sure Ray Kroc thought consistency was important. As did Sam Walton. Henry Ford. Bill Gates. Walt Disney definitely did. An inconsistent product will sink a business. Which actually proves capitalism and free markets work.
cham2119
cham2119 - 7/15/2023, 3:40 PM
@tvor03 - smh sounds like you're trying to convince yourself, that is honestly the biggest crock of bullshit next to the idea of trickle down economics
tvor03
tvor03 - 7/15/2023, 6:53 PM
@cham2119 - I’m trying to convince myself capitalism works? I don’t need convincing. Literally all evidence in the world points to capitalism being successful, which is why every first world country uses it. Even friggin Communist China had to allow free markets to save their country from bankruptcy and total collapse like the Soviet Union.

@tvor03 - a labor movement literally proves your point wrong if capitalism worked for everyone there would be no need for strikes to exist. Jesus christ ronald regan called he wants his entire personality back

kevin Feige is a professional.

He realizes that these are big concerns for the fans, the studios, & all of the people who work to make our entertainment and earn a living to support their families.

These are all very important.

Feige is a classy well-spoken gentleman.

It's disappointing because we all want to have great stories and filmmaking, that's what he means.

It's disappointing that Bob Iger and his other billionaire [frick] faces would rather make writers starve than pay them a decent wage

Say what you want about Feige but he has always been about getting his team paid. He was pro-raises during The Avengers filming, He was pro-residual for Scarlet Johansen, He was pro-ousting Ike Perlmutter for toxic work practices, he was Anti-Bob Chapek, and he is definitely for the teams involved in these productions.

As someone who works a job in which i seem like I do all the work recently but the boss reaps the benefit , I sympathize so much with the writers and other crew members even more now.

Give them fair wages you corporate assholes , having a little bit less money won’t kill ya.

Is this double strike close, just as, or even more devastating to productions than Covid was?
AmazingFILMporg
AmazingFILMporg - 7/15/2023, 7:34 AM
@MCUKnight11 -

It's gonna be worse than covid. The people on strike won't have the protection from government for their finances. The government hauled evictions and PPP loans and stimulus but with this strike they will have none of that😐

Also this is emboldening other sectors in the industry to strike for better pay like the VFX industry.

It's gonna be worse but better overall 💪
