Dafne Keen Responds To X-23 Return With Intriguing Instagram Post - Will She Suit-Up As The New WOLVERINE?

The final trailer for Deadpool and Wolverine confirmed that Dafne Keen will return as Laura/X-23, and the actress has now shared a very interesting social media post in response to the news...

After months of rumors and speculation, Marvel Studios confirmed that Dafne Keen will reprise her Logan role as Laura/X-23 in Deadpool and Wolverine by releasing an emotional final trailer featuring the character.

Keen had remained tight-lipped about her potential return in interviews (though we all had a feeling she'd be back), and now that she's finally able to share her excitement, The Acolyte star posted an image of Laura Kinney as Marvel Comics' All-New Wolverine.

Keen mentioned donning a costume during yesterday's interview with EW.

"There wasn't a lot of looking [for her]. She was just kind of in me. The first thing I did for Deadpool was stunt training before I shot anything. I put on the costume and was like, 'Oh! She's back.'"

Of course, she may have meant her character's standard outfit and not the yellow and blue costume from the comics, but is there a chance Keen could eventually suit-up as the MCU's new Wolverine?

In the comics, Laura became the new Wolverine when Logan was "killed" in the Death of Wolverine arc, and now shares the mantle with her mentor. Hugh Jackman is expected to stick around for a while (at least until Avengers: Secret Wars), but Marvel Studios may not have to look too far for an actor to take over as the iconic mutant hero when the time comes.

Would you like to see Keen become the MCU's new Wolverine at some point? Let us know in the comment section down below.

The MPAA recently gave the movie an official R-rating for: "Strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore, and sexual references."

“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date - Deadpool & Wolverine," reads the new synopsis. "A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier... reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to - F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”

In addition to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the title roles, Deadpool and Wolverine will see Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) And Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) return as their respective characters, and they'll be joined by franchise newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), who will play a TV agent and Charles Xavier's evil counterpart, Cassandra Nova.

Shawn Levy directs Deadpool and Wolverine from a script by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.

The movie is set to open in U.S. & Canadian theaters on July 26, and will be available in IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, Cinemark XD and premium screens everywhere. Will you be checking out Deadpool and Wolverine opening weekend? Let us know in the comments section.

@Negaduck - I've said from the jump that this should end with one last hurrah for Logan (well, this and probably Avengers 5-6) but that, hopefully, by the end of it, X-23 will be the MCU's Wolverine. Dafne's young enough to play the role for 20 years like Jackman has, maybe longer. Could be a helluva run.

@MarkCassidy - I wouldn't have an issue with it. She was amazing as a kid in LOGAN. Now, what .... she's in her late teens or early 20s? She'd be an awesome part of the x-men and just kickin' apples.

I am fine with her suiting up too and fighting alongside Wolverine, would love to see it in fact in this film and one or more of the Avengers films..

...but still want a new Wolverine actor, as in for Logan, in the next saga even if she also sticks around. As to if you call a suited up Laura/X-23 is a side issue that will divide just as a legacy hero name handed down always does and doesn't realy bother me either way although tend to prefer she got her own hero name rathr than using Logan's if he is still alive (and as I say prefer we have both or just Logan for the Avengers films then a new Logan after Secret Wars).

bkmeijer1 - 7/20/2024, 7:47 AM
@Apophis71 - I do hope we get to see both these versions of Wolverine and X-23 in Secret Wars, but want new actors in the roles in the next Saga as well.

The only variants I do wanna stick around are a new Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, T'Challa or another hero that made their debut within the MCU. I'm just not a fan of non-Sacred Timeline native characters running around as the main versions of those characters.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 7/20/2024, 8:05 AM
@Apophis71 - you kinda nailed how I feel. I hope they keep her around but eventually cast a new Wolverine.

Tho, I don't care what anyone says, I love Jackman as Wolvie.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 7/20/2024, 8:21 AM
@lazlodaytona - Loved Jackman as Wolvie from the first Xmen film but went in not expecting it to be source accurate so wasn't hung up on issues related to that other than Rogue who I'd have prefered started out raised by Mystique first or not turn up until after she'd gained Danvers powers...

...my main issue from the first Xmen movie onward (even tho I loved them) was however not enough given for Cyclops and Storm to show them off as a strong leaders (should have held off on any love triangle stuff too) and how powerfull they both were in the main thus constantly felt like supporting characters not main cast strangely.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 7/20/2024, 8:34 AM
@bkmeijer1 - The only one I'd be OK with sticking around of the old cast from Fox would tend to be DP but mostly cos be OK with more of his solo's (and making light of the MCU in the same way he did prior with the Fox films/characters) not so much appearing in anyone elses movies.

Dafne however is one I wouldn't say I'd be against as never had her as an adult X-23 before so don't realy count her the same way I would most and wouldn't want to go back to introducing that character as a kid again. TECHNICALY she is returning cast in this but at the same time as she is talking more fluent English in the clip of her and grown up so much almost feels like a recast anyway, lol. The question would be more is she from another timeline or simply playing a sacred timeline Variant IF they were to use her again in the role post Secret Wars.

Generaly speaking however, yes, all mutants should be rebooted completely (even if using the same actor in some cases) post Secret Wars thus ditching any baggage from the Fox franchise.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/20/2024, 8:57 AM
@Apophis71 - Deadpool is definitely a character that can stick around, especially because of how he is already a meta kind of character.

And Dafne's X-23 could stick around, since she isn't a major character. There could indeed be an MCU version of her already we haven't seen. So to rectify what I said earlier: I was talking about major (mutant) characters.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 7/20/2024, 8:59 AM
@Apophis71 - yeah, they completely messed up Rogue's character. Yeah, she had the absorbing powers but no strength or flight and was just a teenager. Bein a DC guy and most knowledgeable about that, I knew more than enough they screwed up Rogues character from the start (tho, she does look hot in her naked scenes in True Blood)

and agree with you completely with Cyclops and Storm. Cyclops was more than just his eye beams. He was a formidable combatant and an excellent leader from the get go.
and Storm is just a godess.

I enjoyed most of the x-films (including the Wolverine trilogy) than not, but you are absolutely correct my friend on ALL points.

clintthahamster - 7/20/2024, 9:44 AM
@Apophis71 - I'm a big Wolverine fan from way back, but I think it'd be okay to give Logan a rest for a while. Of course, I won't be upset in the slightest if they recast with someone who could play the role for the next 20 years. Daniel Radcliffe, Taron Egerton, someone like that.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 7/20/2024, 9:51 AM
@Apophis71 - I agree. I think Dafne is at the perfect age to continue X-23 (is that the correct code?).
She'd be a HUGE plus for Marvel Studios and you can tell solo adventures after her Logan died on a series with D+.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/20/2024, 10:45 AM
@lazlodaytona - I wouldn't mind it Dafne continues as X-23 in the MCU, but as a seperate version from the one we saw in Logan.

In this case I wouldn't mind her being a variant, as she's not an a-list main character (sorry X-23 fans!). I like the NYX premise with young NYC mutants not enrolled in Xavier's school banding together. Could work in the MCU as well.
StSteven
StSteven - 7/20/2024, 3:04 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Agreed on all points (although I can take or leave those new variants of Steve, Tony, and T'challa, especially as there's likely a new young T'Challa already in the MCU), but I'm definitely with you on non-MCU characters.

Also, I think in Feige's interview with i09 the other day, when he was referring to a mix of X-Men that we've already seen and ones we haven't seen he was referring to the characters and not the actors. I read some folks here were like "No! Don't carry over any Fox-Men!" and while I could be wrong, I don't think that that's what Feige meant. Like we'll have Cyclops in the MCU but not the ones played by Marsden or Sheridan. At least I hope I'm right.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/20/2024, 5:47 PM
@StSteven - that's how I read it as well. He's most likely referring to the team line-up, not the cast call sheet

I hadn't watched the final trailer yet, so I had no idea she was returning. So I suppose good job on the title of the article, because it doesn't read like a spoiler at all
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 7/20/2024, 8:01 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I spoiler tagged the trailer itself, but the news it literally everywhere on social media and across all sites. If something is in a trailer it can't be technically considered a spoiler. I do appreciate that some people don't watch trailers and stay off social media etc, but it's a bit of a catch 22 situation when we need to report the news. I mean, this headline would have had to read: "Spoiler responds to Spoiler return with intriguing Instagram post - will she suit up as Spoiler?"
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/20/2024, 8:52 AM
@MarkCassidy - it's definitely a catch 22. I simply haven't gotten around to it (as I kinda forgot), and I'm not too bothered by spoilers.

It's a compliment though. I think it's impressive that something so obvious of a spoiler can be phrased in a non-spoiler way. Much better than the SPOILERS responds to SPOILER suggestion. That's actually more spoiler-y.
thedrudo
thedrudo - 7/20/2024, 9:21 AM
@MarkCassidy - If people avoid watching most marketing - like me - then yes, whatever is used in the trailer is a spoiler. Knowing she’s back doesn’t bum me out too much and you can argue that Marvel doesn’t care that it’s out and that’s okay, but saying it’s not a spoiler is a baffling choice.

But you keep doing you. I will avoid this website until after the movie drops.

@MarkCassidy - you too
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 7/20/2024, 10:12 AM
@thedrudo - The fact that it's something Marvel chose to reveal means it isn't a spoiler. As I said, I do appreciate that some people avoid the marketing, but the fact that you're even online to leave this comment means you have to be ready to have certain things about movies disclosed before you see them.

As for avoiding this site, I mean, literally every other site of this kind stuck her return in the trailer headline yesterday.
