DEADPOOL 3 Director Shawn Levy On Rumors He'll Helm AVENGERS: SECRET WARS; Threequel Is Only Half-Finished

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy is among the filmmakers rumoured to be in the running for Avengers: Secret Wars, and his response...well, it may be telling! He's also shared an update on the threequel...

As of now, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is still set to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Seeing as the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker was working on Wonder Man for Marvel Studios prior to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, he clearly still has a good relationship with them.

Whether the same can be said for writer Jeff Loveness (Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania) is another matter. Rumour has it he's been dropped from the movie, while there are even claims Michael Waldron (Loki) is no longer penning Avengers: Secret Wars

In recent weeks, both Sam Raimi (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) have been named as frontrunners to helm the Multiverse Saga finale...as has Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy.

With reports the threequel leads directly into Secret Wars, his involvement would make sense, and in the video below, Levy addresses the rumours in a very intriguing way.

"I've read those rumors," he responds, simply adding: "And that's all I'm going to say."

Well, that certainly sounds like he might be in the running, don't you think? We'd bet on Marvel Studios waiting to see the response to Deadpool 3 before making any decisions but Levy would be a more than capable director to close out the Multiverse Saga.

In a separate conversation with Deadline, Levy also shared an update on where things stand with the next Deadpool movie.

"Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least large swaths of it, we are paused - we were halfway through filming," he said. "It was a joy every day, and that chemistry [between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman] is, I have to say - spoiler alert - as relentlessly awesome as we had all hoped it would be. But, we are halfway through filming."

If the movie is only half-finished, don't bank on Deadpool 3 meeting its planned May 3, 2024 release date.

Alongside Reynolds and Jackman, Deadpool franchise vets Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), and Rob Delaney (Peter) are all set to return in this threequel.

Emma Corrin is expected to play Cassandra Nova, while Matthew Macfadyen will likely take on the role of a TVA agent named Paradox. It's also been confirmed that Jennifer Garner will reprise her role as Elektra, with Liev Schreiber, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen among the many names rumoured to appear.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was recently pushed back to May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars set to follow on May 7, 2027.

People, isn't it staggering that his work (directed or produced) has attracted some of the best actors in the business? It's a bit odd. Does he have any dirt on them?

Nothing about his filmography shows that he would be the right choice for an Avengers movie. I'll wait and see but I doubt Deadpool 3 will get great reviews.

@Archgoat - Nothing about the Russos’ filmography prior to CA:TWS would’ve said they were right for one either

@LeonNova - people kept forgetting they were known for community before marvel

@LeonNova - I think levy’s directed enough middling stuff to make people wary of him directing Secret Wars. Although his Stranger Things eps are always standouts.

@RafaelTorres - Free Guy and Adam's Project are fun entertaining movies, not sure what people see in them that's so horrible, some movies are just meant to be fun and not pieces of art.

It's going to be interesting to see how Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars and Avengers Forever perform.

• One is going for a bunch of the new heroes nobody is really invested in from failed phases of the franchise facing off against a villain who has been defeated repeatedly and is not remotely intimidating or interesting played by an actor who may be recast.
• One is going for a bunch of nostalgia via phase 1-3 characters that the company has shat on for the past few years both in regards to the handling of the character in-universe and the remarks about them out of universe, relying on insane levels of CGI
• One is going for sheer scale bringing in cameos of characters from failed franchises that were otherwise completely unconnected in the hopes of leeching attention

@Scarilian - so whats the premise of avengers forever?

@Vigor -
Avengers Forever is expected to adapting the comic series of the same name. Avengers VS Immortus across the multiverse, in the process Kang the Conqueror (The one from Ant-Man 3) will ally with the Avengers to defeat Immortus.

@Scarilian - how come I never heard this rumor? Sounds fantastic
Majors has the acting range to do the whole villain here and ally there thing.

And the new avengers really really need more time in the spotlight and together. Otherwise people will always yearn for the old guard

@Vigor -
There was a leak of Marvel Phase 4/5/6 stuff that included a lot of shows and films that were unannounced - that's where the whole 'Avengers Forever' comes from - cbm covered it a while back. The reddit it was originally posted on was taken down shortly after this list popped up, so it's believed to be legitimate - or at least for the time it was before the delays and presumed cancellations.

He would be a significantly better fit than Cuaron for this movie

@tmp3 - Agreed, Cuaron would be better suited for a character specific feature, not an essemble.

I’m waiting for Marvel to start actual announcements before I believe any rumors. But my hope is that someone at Marvel convinces the Russo’s to come back for Secret Wars. They just get how to make a well paced CBM with some great action sequences as well as meaning drama.

I mean, it would make sense as to why Deadpool 3 has seemingly become this huge multiversal adventure. Feige could be testing Levy to see how he handles juggling a lot of characters. It's like the Russo brothers and Civil War.

I'd bet most of the directors of the big multiversal stuff in this phase are being looked at in a similar regard. Like Raimi after Multiverse of Madness.

Deadpool 3 won't make may 3rd, no matter how long the strikes last.

Captain America 4 is taking it's place as it has been shot for a while and is already in post production.

Deadpool may take Cap 4's july slot, but decembers Thunderbolts slot is more likely.

Biggest hack in Hollywood. He’s gonna ruin Deadpool and wolverine. This movie could have been so epic. But it already sounds like it’s Deadpool 2 all over again. With reynolds in complete control. And a story/ dialogue that changes by the day on set. I know reynolds loves the character and all but he’s not a writer and Deadpool 2s story proves that when he’s in complete creative control the humor gets repetitive and dull extremely fast.
Deadpool 2 sucked. Now Deadpool and Wolverine is gonna suck even more because you’ve got this clown directing and editing it. He makes kids movies he doesn’t have the experience with hard R humor. It’s gonna be reynolds doing stupid unfunny improv the whole time and a story that’s a mess and dooesnt even matter. I mean what idiot took a page from the terrible flash movie and said let’s do it with wolverine. (Probably Shawn levy) sounds like a dumb Shawn levy idea. I literally hate every movie he’s ever made. I see his name and I know it’s gonna suck. Stranger things sucks too. Unless you’re 12 years old. That’s what Shawn should fu*k off too, another kids tv show where he belongs. Him and his creepy ass smile. How has he not been cancelled he looks 1000X creepier than the creepy Bryan singer. I guarantee you levy’s closet full of dirty and kids is gonna come back to haunt him when he’s on the top of the world as the director that ruined Deadpool and wolverine. Jack man is gonna be done after this movie gets received horribly, like every other Shawn levy shitty movie. He casted Harry Potter as a wolverine variant are you FU**ing KIDDING ME. Shawn levy is literally the worst choice I could think of to direct this. There’s no one else worse. Even Simon kernbjrg
