Three weeks out from the theatrical release of Deadpool and Wolverine, box office tracking is pointing to a potentially record-breaking opening weekend for Marvel Studios/Disney's first ever R-rated movie.

The Merc With a Mouth's MCU debut is expected to take in at least $160 million to $165 million domestically over the July 26-28 weekend. This would not only give the film the best opening of 2024 so far, but the biggest launch ever for an R-rated title - a record still held by the first Deadpool movie, which amassed $133.7 million domestically when it hit theaters back in 2016.

The prospect of seeing Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson joining forces with Hugh Jackman's Logan is clearly a huge draw, which was already evident from ticket sale numbers.

Marvel will obviously be hoping these estimates prove to be accurate, as the studio really needs a box office win after a run of disappointing movies, including the recent Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels - which actually emerged as the lowest-grossing film in the history of the MCU.

Do you plan on seeing Deadpool and Wolverine on the big screen opening weekend? Let us know in the comments section down below.

The MPAA recently gave the movie an official R-rating for: "Strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore, and sexual references."

“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date - Deadpool & Wolverine," reads the new synopsis. "A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier... reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to - F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”

In addition to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the title roles, Deadpool and Wolverine will see Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) And Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) return as their respective characters, and they'll be joined by franchise newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), who will play a TV agent and Charles Xavier's evil counterpart, Cassandra Nova.

Shawn Levy directs Deadpool and Wolverine from a script by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.

The movie is set to open in U.S. & Canadian theaters on July 26, and will be available in IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, Cinemark XD and premium screens everywhere.

@MisterDoctor217 - if Barbie, transformers, beauty and the beast, fast n furious all grossed a billion than Deadpool & Wolverine is no exception. There’s no way this film will underperform. Disney is the only studio that has the most billion dollar hits under their belt.

@MisterDoctor217 - this is my guess as well

@TheMetaMan -

Dude fast and furious hasn’t had a billion dollar movie since 2017 XD

Transformers as well.

Barbie was like a wild card.

If this was 2019 I would have said billion easy for an R rated Wolviie and Deadpool movie. But times have changed.

@MisterDoctor217 - dude you have already lost the argument. Trust me when I say it’s already grossed a billion. In fact when it has been announced that the film has officially reached the one billion dollar mark imma reach out to you and say “told you so.” Therefore don’t disappear when it happens. I have won bets off movies making a billion before. In fact my friend still owes me money from the last bet! Do not disappear from this site, I’m onto you lol. I’m gonna message you immediately when it happens. I love it when I’m right and believe me I am. :D

@TheMetaMan -

That’s kinda presumptuous of you, I have no idea how you know the movie has already made a billion dollars
But okay XD

@MisterDoctor217 - Hitting the 800 is the safe bet I'd say, anything else after that is near impossible to be sure of in advance even if it has decent odda of the billion if good and well recieved considering all factors.

@Apophis71 -

Yeah I think 800 million is definitely in the cards, billion slight chance if it’s really good and has rewatch value.

But since it really isn’t a family movie I just don’t think it’ll hit a billion that easy , if at all 🤔

Yeah, if GotG3 couldn't hit $1bn then I don't see this one doing so. Probably will fall in line with the other two films, maybe a tiny bit more.

thats a big change from 200mil opening they were mentioning a few weeks ago. this new estimate seems very conservative.

@rebellion - This very site put out something saying even less than this a few weeks back, so, who knows.
TheMetaMan
TheMetaMan - 7/3/2024, 2:33 PM
@EskimoJ - The movie will become a billion dollar success no matter what. It’s why they made it the way it is because Fiege and everyone at Disney know how to cook up a billion dollar hit. The formula is actually rather simple. I don’t know why everyone has a hard time believing this movie will gross a billion dollars. If you had told me a year ago that Barbie will gross a billion, I’d be highly skeptical and yet here we are. Deadpool 3 has got everything going for it and nothing in the form of competition to stop it.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 7/3/2024, 2:44 PM
@TheMetaMan - it is hard to believe that they know the simple formula for 1B hits if The Marvels happened.

The environment this time is different from previous hits and recent hits like barbie, mario and oppenheimer need something special to be one.
TheMetaMan
TheMetaMan - 7/3/2024, 3:09 PM
@vectorsigma - the marvels was a necessary loss. Nothing could be done about that. Just watch this space.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 7/3/2024, 4:13 PM
@rebellion - ALWAYS depends which source numbers you go on as initialy was 100+ then 120+ from one, which has since increased since to the 160+. The highest another got to was 180+ (only a few days ago) with the one saying it would pass 200 said it had a chance of hitting the 200 to 240 if interest kept increasing at the rate it already was at at that specific point in time (but then reported as being a firm prediction rather than a conditional one).

Why never worth listening too much to predictions prior to 3 weeks out, they differ a lot as mostly guestimated until solid sales numbers available close to release can back it up.

Post pandemic the margin or error on the differing methods of predicting has increased a LOT hence why more divergence of predictions a month or more out.

@TheMetaMan -
Both prior films earned about the same amount, which hints either to Deadpool's popularity being limited or the audience who are seeing R-rated flicks being limited.

Either way, Marvel flicks normally open really strong and then have a steep drop. I expect Deadpool 3 won't have as many repeat viewings, it's nostalgia but done in a bait-and-switch way.
