DEADPOOL 3 Star Hugh Jackman On Steroid Speculation And Initially Studying Wolves To Play Wolverine

There have always been rumors that Hugh Jackman may have relied on steroids to achieve his jacked Wolverine physique, and the Deadpool 3 star has now weighed in on the speculation...

Hugh Jackman was obviously in great shape when he debuted as Wolverine in the first X-Men movie, but he packed on more muscle over the years and became even more ripped for each subsequent appearance as the character.

This resulted in a lot of speculation that the actor must be relying on steroids to achieve his chiselled appearance. It's something Jackman has mostly avoided addressing in interviews, but he was asked about the rumors directly while chatting to Chris Wallace (via Variety), and had the following to say on the matter.

“No, I love my job. And I love Wolverine,” Jackman said when quizzed about going on "the juice" to enhance his physique. “I got to be careful what I say here, but I had been told anecdotally what the side effects are of that. And I was like, ‘I don’t love it that much.’ So no, I just did it the old school way. And I tell you, I’ve eaten more chickens — I’m so sorry to all the vegans and vegetarians and to the chickens of the world. Literally the karma is not good for me. If the deity has anything related to chickens, I’m in trouble.”

Jackman has been training hard for his return as Logan in Deadpool 3 (which he recently referred to as "Wolverine and Deadpool"), which will mark his 12th time playing the fan-favorite mutant. At this point, he obviously has a solid grasp on the character, but that wasn't always the case!

Elsewhere in the interview, Jackman told an amusing story about studying wolves after landing the role - because he thought "wolverine" was a made-up moniker for his character!

“I had never read the comic book,” he admitted. “I got the part. I didn’t really know anything about it. In Australia we don’t have wolverines. I didn’t know that was a real animal. I’d never heard of a wolverine. I thought it was a made-up animal. You know, like, he’s got man hands of steel, made up. And so I was passing as I was doing rehearsal at the Imax, they had this documentary about wolves. And I was like, perfect, because obviously I’m a wolf, part wolf.”

“So I went [to set] with all these wolf moves and I was doing these moves, and the director said, ‘What are you doing?'” Jackman continued. “And I said, ‘Well, I was just thinking wolves are always looking like this because they’re actually smelling, they’ve got their nose to the ground. That’s why they’re looking like this all the time.’ And he goes, ‘What do you mean a wolf?’ And I said, ‘Well, you know, Wolverine — I’m part wolf so…’ and he goes, ‘No, you’re a wolverine.'”

To be fair, Logan probably does have more in common with a wolf than an actual wolverine (the name was applied because of his ferocity and short stature), so some of those mannerisms could have worked reasonably well... at least in Wolvie's more animalistic state!

What do you guys make of Jackman's comments? Deadpool 3 is set to hit theaters next February.

Of all the steroided actors who claim to not do steroids Hughe probably did every supplement possible to achieve his lean cut up look.
Now the size of Hemsworth, the Rock and others who grew massively I could see that being roids.
But who knows, I’m sure the studios as well as the actors would like to keep any steroid use under wraps.

there's nothing wrong with actors taking steroids, it's their bodies and they're not competitive athletes. but to continuously say it's the result of nothing but "chicken, rice and broccoli" isn't gonna do anything but build insanely unrealistic body expectations for young men. people were somehow shocked that liver king wasn't natty, so that's where we're at right now.

@tmp3 - Anyone that thought Liver King was all natural probably needed to get their head examined.

I call Captain America Steve Rogers on this.

That’s not what I’m talking about, I meant it’s 🧢

At the very LEAST he took diuretics to keep his muscles that I am positive he built with food and weights, while dehydrating as much as he can look “stage ready”

I love Jackman, but he has 100% used gear to beef up for Wolverine. Maybe he was saying "no" to some specific element, but the level of consistent improvement to his physique at his age and height just isn't naturally attainable, unless you're some kind of genetic mutant. You can get shredded, and you can put on muscle, but he was putting on something like 30lbs of muscle in a year, and then shedding it the following year.

I suppose it isn't completely impossible, but it's highly highly unlikely he's remained 100% natural throughout his Wolverine career. Maybe Marvel has access to some kind of magical vitamin that isn't technically hormonal. And sure, when it's your full time job, you can dedicate all of your time to eating clean and lifting heavy. But he has to recover like a normal person. And the amount of volume it would take to beef up like that doesn't leave much room for recovery time, if you know what I'm saying.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I feel like when an actor says something like this, they should have to get tested. Though to be fair, if Jackman was like "oh yea, I was taking this and this and this", then you'd probably have a lot of inexperienced people seeking it out and hurting themselves. So maybe lying is actually the most responsible thing someone in his position could do.

He's probably being honest in the fact that he didn't take "steroids" but he didn't say anything about testosterone, EPO ect. Lol
