Ryan Reynolds On Why He Believes There's "Only Been One Wolverine" - Will Hugh Jackman Stay On As Logan?

During last night's Berlin fan event, Deadpool and Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds explained why he believes there has only ever been one actor to play Logan in live-action...

Hugh Jackman has now been playing Wolverine for over two decades, and despite other actors being cast as younger takes on his fellow X-Men when the timeline was reset following First Class, he has stayed on as the fan-favorite mutant hero.

Jackman thought he had hung up the claws for good after James Mangold's Logan, but was convinced to reprise the role for this month's Deadpool and Wolverine, and there are rumors that he will remain in the MCU as Logan for at least one more movie.

During yesterday's Berlin fan-event, Ryan Reynolds offered high praise to his friend and co-star, explaining that the reason "there's only been one Wolverine" is that "no one can do it except [Hugh Jackman."

While it is difficult to imagine another actor doing as great a job as Jackman, recasting that particular character isn't quite as simple as the rest of the X-Men, since Logan's healing factor means that he hasn't really aged very much over the years.

During the Shanghai event, Jackman said that making Deadpool and Wolverine was "one of the greatest" experiences of his career.

"I feel in many ways fans of Wolverine — because of Deadpool, because of [Reynolds and Levy], are going to see a fuller, more different side to him than you've seen before. And that was thrilling for me, and I hope it is for you. The experience of making the movie was also one of the greatest of my career, and I've been playing Wolverine for 25 years. This experience exceeded anything I've done before as this character — and in many other movies, in anything. I loved it. And I think it shows on the screen. You can feel the warmth. The movie has a warmth to it, and it's funny, and it's irreverent, and the action is crazy. But I think you can feel the friendship."

Could Jackman stick around as Wolverine even when a new team is introduced for the planned Marvel Studios reboot? We know Kevin Feige is a big fan, so depending on the success of D&W - and box office estimates are very positive - it's certainly a possibility.

The MPAA recently gave the movie an official R-rating for: "Strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore, and sexual references."

“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date - Deadpool & Wolverine," reads the new synopsis. "A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier... reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to - F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”

In addition to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the title roles, Deadpool and Wolverine will see Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) And Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) return as their respective characters, and they'll be joined by franchise newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), who will play a TV agent and Charles Xavier's evil counterpart, Cassandra Nova.

Shawn Levy directs Deadpool and Wolverine from a script by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.

The movie is set to open in U.S. & Canadian theaters on July 26, and will be available in IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, Cinemark XD and premium screens everywhere.

Because nostalgia got the better of Feige, that’s why.

@FireandBlood - I think he wouldn't touch nostalgia if his Phase 4 and Phase 5 were hits with the audience.

So it was more like desperation got the better of Feige. That Beast cameo in The Marvels was unacceptable.

@MadThanos - Idk, I think that was the plan from the get go for this saga. That’s why they’re pulling all these multiverse shenanigans.

@FireandBlood - i think its good nostalgia but also i thought it was established that no new people could be cast in the roles until contracts were up. so it effectively is the reason we aren't getting x men until a later date. so i appreciate him saying why make us wait and give us a little teaser and also closing out the fox universe.

Me too, Hugh is a legend and I'm stoked to see Deadpool & Wolverine, but I'm just as excited to see someone else bring something new to the role.

Nothing but love for Hugh and his contribution to the CBM genre.

Shoutout to Sir Patrick Stewart as well tho! (the other holder of the guinnes world record!)

Of course there's gonna be another Wolverine in the future, nothing lasts forever but Jackman really gave his life for this role, man. Respect.

@Cleander - I just dislike that ever since X-Men 2000, most of the movies have become Wolverine and his chumps. The only exceptions really are First Class, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix

@HegoD - I’m in. i do really wish this trend of putting modern music into trailers for movies set in the past would just die. Give us a sample of the score, which likely fits the setting much better.

@mountainman - Yeah, I'm kinda with you there and I was thinking the same thing while watching the trailer. It just seemed... out of place in some way and almost... "cheapened" the trailer a bit (that's not exactly the best word but that's what comes to mind). And I don't mean that against the music itself, it's just a little off-putting when you have what is supposed to be a super-serious period piece and it has modern music in the trailer. Obviously we know that the actual movie won't have that music in it, but still.

It would be like if we got a trailer for a new King Arthur movie and it had "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC playing in the background. Sure, I love that song, but it just doesn't fit with the period of the film. Maybe they're just trying to get the attention of the "youts". 😳

mountainman - 7/9/2024, 3:14 PM
@StSteven - You mean like the “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” trailer?

And that movie ended up being a pretty terrible take on the mythology so hopefully this one doesn’t follow suit.

StSteven - 7/9/2024, 4:13 PM
@mountainman - Actually that one wasn't as bad as the Gladiator II one because at least that Zeppelin song sounded a little less contemporary. Still a little off-putting. Never saw the movie though so I can't really comment on it but the trailer doesn't do it any favors.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/9/2024, 4:18 PM
@StSteven - I agree that it was less bad but it was still bad. And the movie was terrible. Maybe a tolerable watch once if you aren’t sober but Gladiator II will likely be better.

This trailer wasn’t the worst, but that song certainly dragged it down a lot
StSteven
StSteven - 7/9/2024, 7:29 PM
@mountainman - Yeah, I'm not really planning on watching the King Arthur movie (in any condition) but I hope that the Gladiator II movie comes through. The first one was REALLY good in my opinion and I think that it will be hard for the second one to live up to it, but it seems like (at least from the trailer) it has a different enough of a story and characters to make it a worthy successor without just being a carbon copy of the first one, which is what I was initially afraid of when the movie was announced.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/9/2024, 7:46 PM
@StSteven - It’s almost impossible for this to be as good as the first. But if it is at least entertaining I’ll be happy. We need more big budget historical epics!
StSteven
StSteven - 7/9/2024, 7:52 PM
@mountainman - Oh, I totally agree and I really like them as well. But I'm married with 2 little girls, so I'm the only one who is actually interested in this stuff. Everyone else would rather watch the Minions. Maybe if they made historical movies starring the Minions we could come to an agreement...

mountainman - 7/9/2024, 10:00 PM
@StSteven - Im lucky. My wife enjoys the stuff. She is actually more hyped for this movie than I am, but I think it’s because she has a celebrity crush on Mescal lol.

And my kid is only 1 so all I rally have to watch regularly is Bluey , which I don’t mind.
StSteven
StSteven - 7/9/2024, 11:01 PM
@mountainman - I don't think that my wife and I have watched the first one since we were dating which was like a decade or so ago so she might be into it. The kids... not so much.

And "Bluey" is pretty cool. Our oldest daughter started on "Peppa" and then moved onto "Bluey" so I've been through both (I still currently have a section in my upstairs game room that is a combination of toys from both). But as a parent having to watch those shows, "Bluey" is DEFINITELY better. If you haven't seen it yet, the episode with the Unicorse is f**king hilarious. I can imagine a younger version of myself getting stoned and watching that and giggling my ass off. Good stuff. 😊.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/9/2024, 11:29 PM
@StSteven - Unicorse is a good one. Love how Bandit trolls the kids.

Sleepy Time is my favorite. Followed by any of them where we glimpse the kids as older, like that camping one.

@mountainman - Those are good as well. BTW, if you haven't seen it Target and Walmart sell the Bob Bilby hand puppet (I know because we bought one as a reward on the way back from the dentist a year or two back 😊).

The non-gay love is suffocating with the constant admiration and blowing smoke up each other’s ass’es.

Hugh was nice and all, but only bc we never had someone else to compare against.

I for one and beyond done with everything FoX-Men related. The MCU needs fresh blood w/ out all the baggage.

At this point I’d even take a new Deadpool.

I’m looking forward to DP3, and know there will be some spill over into Secret Wars, but I pray that we get a clean break after that
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 7/9/2024, 2:00 PM
@MuadDib - They should definitely reboot as hard as they can after Secret Wars. It's not a bad thing to reboot. Fox-Men was hit and miss, but they did good overall. The MCU is exceptionally good, especially the first three phases. But it's just time for a fresh start free of continuity baggage.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 7/9/2024, 9:35 AM
Great job Hugh. Love you man, put in the hardwork and long hours but its time to pass the mantle. Until that day, LFG
mountainman
mountainman - 7/9/2024, 3:16 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - He started looking too old for the role in The Wolverine, but his performance and look were both fine in that movie.

Logan at least was portraying an old, battered and losing his powers Wolverine so that’s gone too.

But he definitely is starting to look too old here. I’m excited for this movie and would welcome Hugh back in any movies that make sense up to Secret Wars, but man we need a full X-Men reboot after that.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 7/10/2024, 7:56 AM
@mountainman - pretty much how i feel. i just want the mask on for more than 1 scene... thats all im asking for in this movie.

secret wars would be a great movie for him to pass the torch to the new Wolvie... but thats just me thinking out loud
mountainman
mountainman - 7/10/2024, 8:20 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - Secret Wars could be that but it is already going to be a risk. I’d like it to be a more definitive Endgame. The old universe is dead and the new one begins. I don’t think they’ll go for a fresh start, but they desperately need it.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 7/10/2024, 10:44 AM
@mountainman - true. at this point who knows. im honestly ready for a complete overhaul and fresh start. I only want to see DP3, FF4, DD Born again and Avengers 5/6. Don't care for anything else... they've burnt me out with all the other crap i sit and watch just so im not lost and know whats going on.

Bring on the restart, imo
mountainman
mountainman - 7/10/2024, 10:53 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - I can’t be excited about FF or the next Avengers until I know more about them.

Daredevil I am excited but skeptical.

Deadpool & Wolverine I am also excited but hoping it’s only angle isn’t just tons of Wade and Logan variants with random non-MCU Marvel cameos.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 7/10/2024, 12:42 PM
@mountainman - Lol. Stop being a debbie downer!!

but seriously, i feel the same and hoping to be pleasantly surprised and excited
mountainman
mountainman - 7/10/2024, 1:03 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - I am honestly excited for this. X-Men are my favorite Marvel characters. Enjoyed both Deadpool movies (#1 more but like them both). I like 2/3 of the Wolverine movies and even don’t hate the Fox X-Men movies like some do.

I just want this to be good on its own and endless variants don’t interest me. Dog pool and Head pool can be fun gags, but they aren’t what drives me to this. And for all that is holy, if Laura is in this it has better be as X-23 and not a Wolverine variant!

To be fair , he’s the only one that’s been given the opportunity to do it as of now…

Don’t get me wrong , I love Hugh and he’s been great imo but I do hope to get a complete clean slate & fresh blood in these roles when the X-Men are properly integrated into the MCU!!.

Jackman’s a legend though and I will always appreciate the love & care he put into the role.
