Ryan Reynolds Says Sewing Up Deadpool's Mouth In X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE Was "All-Time Foolish Studio Note"

Ryan Reynolds has reflected on his role as "Deadpool" in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine and reveals how young is too young to watch the R-Rated Deadpool & Wolverine in theaters. Read on for details...

The X-Men franchise reached a low point with 2006's The Last Stand, so it made all the sense in the world for 20th Century Fox to shift the spotlight to the team's most popular member in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Unfortunately, that was another disappointment, particularly in regards to its portrayal of Deadpool. Still, the casting of Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson was met with great fanfare, and the actor did a great job with the character.

Despite that, there were several issues with this version (including the fact his mutant power seemed to be slicing bullets in half), and Fox seemed unsure of how to transform Wade into Deadpool. That's why he became Weapon XI, William Stryker's ultimate weapon to kill Wolverine.

He boasted a whole host of powers and was ultimately beheaded by Logan; however, a post-credits scene confirmed "Deadpool" survived, presumably setting the stage for what would have been another awful spin-off.

Talking to Variety about whether he feels Deadpool & Wolverine needs to make up for their last on-screen meeting, Reynolds said, "The first time we worked together on 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine,' it’s easy to say we got some things wrong. Deadpool sewing up his mouth was one of the all-time foolish studio notes."

"But at the same time, I’m so grateful for it. Hugh was a huge influence on me. It was the first time I saw how a movie star operates on set, and it defied all the preconceived notions for a movie star," the actor added. "He was so warm and welcoming. He made it safe to play. He knew every single person’s name."

One big difference in this team-up is the fact Deadpool and Wolverine will share the screen in an R-Rated adventure. Asked how young is too young to watch the threequel, Reynolds said, "So many kids have seen “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2.” My own kids have seen it. And they came damaged."

"But it’s never rated R just to be rated R. A lot of it is just the character. The character is very crass. His brain is like a half-eaten omelet inside the skull of a 7-year-old. Don’t bring a 114-year-old, because that person will not leave alive. Anyone in a diaper."

Deadpool & Wolverine is unlikely to be the last time these two cross paths on screen as it sounds like there are already plans for them to reunite in an upcoming Avengers movie

What did you think about Wade and Logan's team-up in X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

I have the belief that if this final battle would have featured a more accurate Deadpool than what we got, this movie would not have been hated the way that it was. There were other issues for sure, but the disappointment of that Deadpool reveal was really what made everyone hate that movie.

@mountainman - see I tend to disagree, Deadpool wasn’t the general audience favourite until he got his movie. I honestly believe if the film up until that point had been any good, a silent ‘proto’ Deadpool, setting up actual Deadpool going forward would have worked just fine. Having him be full Deadpool at the end of that movie would have been so tonally jarring.

@Twenty23Three - I just rewatched it recently. Like I said lots of bad elements, but nothing was nearly as dumb as that. Even if you didn’t know who Deadpool was, The whole combining powers into one super bad guy story beat has always been dumb.

What would you say in that movie was worse than that?

@mountainman - I just rewatched it recently too and it is cheesy AF. It's a poorly done film with some great moments. Hugh carries the whole film, it is very watchable just because of Hugh. Ryan's good in the early scenes. Gambit was actually pretty great, imo.

But I would still have to agree with you. I mean it's a shoddily put together, disposable Hollywood action movie, but that's not why it was unpopular. There are plenty of cheesy-assed action movies like this that everybody loves.

No, it was the fan reaction to Barakapool that had a knock-on effect to the rest of the world's opinion about the movie. Fans are the gauge of whether or not a cbm is worth seeing. If the people the film was made for all hate it, then why should a regular person go see it?

Then the quality doesn't help. If it was a great film, then people would love it despite what the fans think of it, but it's not a great film at all.

@mountainman - At least the Wolverine game was great even better than the movie.

@ObserverIO - I’ve done a rewatch of all the Fox films leading up to D&W.

It’s funny how much time can change your opinion over things. I didn’t hate Origins as much as I used to, although it’s still one of the worst in the entire series (I put Dark Phoenix below it). Agree about the early movie Wade and Gambit. But it is cheesy as hell and has a ton of flaws.

Even my top three movies in the series all have flaws.

X2 has the terrible depictions of Storm, Cyclops and Rogue that plagued that whole first trilogy.

DOFP had a nonexistent 70’s X-Men team (after building a team in the previous movie!), Magneto lost his Brotherhood, and the Charles storyline was just lame and annoying and just an excuse for the story.

And Logan gave us this future where the X-Men failed, Charles was a disaster, and the X-24 villain was just lazy and lame.

Overall that series had good themes at time and hit some things out of the park. Then it failed spectacularly other times. It was a very mixed bag.

@Matador - The Wolverine game based on that movie is my favorite X-Men based game of all time, unless you consider ehe Capcom fighting games featuring the characters. I like it even more than the Legends series. That game was fantastic.

@mountainman - The prequels were such a missed opportunity. They had an origin movie with the first class of X-Men in the '60s, then a movie set in the '70s with only Charles and one surviving member of the first class and then followed that with a new team in the third movie.

They could have easily made the first class the OG 5, had the team disappear on Krakoa with Cyclops the only surviving member in DOFP (instead of Beast) and then introduced the giant-sized team in the next movie.

They got the dates and story beats all there, but not the right line-ups. Fans would have gone nuts if they'd done that.

@ObserverIO - Overall I like First Class and DOFP a lot, but those movies both failed on depicting a good X-Men team.

And then the team is build in Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, and those movies were overall worse for a number of other reasons.

100% missed opportunities. Some really great ideas poorly executed. They should have just rebooted at First Class rather than trying to poorly shoe horn them into prequels of the old trilogy.

Imagine First Class as the exact same movie but with a good first team (OG 5 members for example). Literally the only change they needed to make was to have good X-Men.

I like your Krakoa and new team idea for the sequel, but they could have kept the same DOFP idea. Keep everything about it, but have Charles had built up the team and school more in the time since First Class. Literally just the one change of having a built X-Men team and school could have made it better.

Then you could have had a great basis for Apocalypse. Without having to introduce all the X-Men members in that movie, they could have properly developed the villain. It would have taken better writing and characterization too, but having less legwork of intruding Cyclops, Jean, Nightcrawler, and a full school, could have allowed for a tighter storyline.

And we don’t talk about Dark Phoenix.

Transformers WfC & FoC

You getting Marvel vs. Capcom fighting collection?

?si=-5G9UtgLe-Rl5QlY

Got 2 preordered one for Switch and one for PS4 In case we have to wait 10 years and they lose the license again. Marvel vs Capcom 2 goes for crazy monies! When I was stationed in ND during blizzards we hunkered down and played over 100 matches losers had to do pushups.

@Matador - I am 100% getting it! MvC2 is my favorite, but I also like the others in that series as well. Such fun games that provided so much variety and cool comic/capcom adaptations.

I really hope this means that Marvel and Capcom are playing nice again and they will make a new MvC that includes mutants and isn’t a 🗑️ pile like Infinite was. 3 was a cool evolution of 2 (still like 2 better overall) and man they dropped the ball with Infinite. With SF6 revitalizing that franchise, hopefully a new MvC4 can do the same. Until then, the collection is the best we got!

@mountainman - I'm excited to replay some of these again and SF vs X-Men never got a chance to finish it!
Punisher as well a lost beat'em up Final Fight gem. Too bad they didn't include Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems & X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse like Arcade 1Up did.

Noteworthy Mentions:
Captain America and the Avengers - Data East
X-Men Arcade - Konami
Spider-Man Arcade - Sega

@Matador - Yeah I’m shocked those Capcom SNES games didn’t make it in. But I’ll take what I can get.

Also, can I get an easy way to obtain the Power Stone games on modern systems? That second one is one of Capcom’s all time best!

While it was a dumb decision , the movie was already not good regardless so it didn’t really make much of a difference anyway.

The best parts of that (besides Jackman) were of course Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth and the opening credits imo.

It was a bad decision that has paid off with plenty of jokes. In hindsight, because they can laugh at and acknowledge it, can't be mad at it. And since Deadpool gets to openly poo(l) all over it, even still, just makes it better.

Actually, the biggest mistake was not IMMEDIATELY following up with a Deadpool movie where he got the comic accurate suit and sought revenge on Stryker and the Weapon X program from Origins...

His setup wasn't perfect, but I always thought it wasn't completely irredeemable either... Wade Wilson definitely had proper motivation to become Deadpool and become upset and mentally unhinged in a solo film.

The biggest problem the character had in Origins, was adding on a bunch of powers that Deadpool never used in the comics.

mountainman - 7/11/2024, 11:02 AM
@xfan320 - It would have been tough to make that version into Deadpool because they decided to give him a bunch of powers. A teleporting and laser eyed Deadpool?

Growing up a kid in the 90s Deadpool and Gambit were my 2 favorite marvel characters. I remember I was so excited to finally see Deadpool at the movies and I remember being so let down and disappointed. I practically said wtf out loud at the theater when Deadpool showed up with sealed lips and cyclops optic blast lol
