Shawn Levy Says DEADPOOL 3 Will NOT Be Final Title; Confirms LOGAN Is Canon

Director Shawn Levy has confirmed that Deadpool 3 will not be the official title of the upcoming MCU threequel. He also makes it clear that the events of James Mangold's Logan are canon...

When it was announced that Hugh Jackman would be reprising the role of Wolverine for the third Deadpool movie, fans of the Aussie actor's take on the iconic X-Men hero were understandably excited, but there was also some concern that the events of James Mangold's much-loved Logan would be ignored.

This was certainly a possibility, especially if Marvel Studios planned to have Jackman stick around as Wolvie for more than one movie (we still don't know what's in the pipeline post Deadpool 3), but director Shawn Levy has now made it clear that his film will not discount or retcon anything that happens in Logan - including the title character's death.

“I have always said that I can’t wait for Deadpool 3 to come out because all I want to do is give interviews alongside Ryan where we talk about our reverence for the movie Logan,” Levy explained to BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast. “Logan is canon. We love Logan. That happened. I want the world to know, as the producer and director, all of us share a deep love and respect for Logan, every aspect of how it’s crafted, and all the events that take place.”

In a separate interview with The Wrap, Levy confirmed that "Deadpool 3" will not be the movie's final title.

“No, there’s no title yet. I sometimes refer to it as Deadpool vs Wolverine or Deadpool and Wolverine or Deadpool 3 With Wolvie — we’ve got a few titles we’ve been bandying about, but boy, it’s a tough one.”

While speaking to Jakes Takes, Levy also shared Jackman's reaction to the news that he'd be donning Wolverine's classic blue and yellow costume for the first time. In short, "f*ck yeah."

Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) And Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) will all return as their respective characters, and they'll be joined by franchise newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown), who is believed to be playing Cassandra Nova, and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession).

Specific lot details remain a mystery for now, but Wade and Wolvie are expected to find themselves (trapped?) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A recent report claimed that Loki's TVA, including Agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Miss Minutes, will be involved. We have also been led to believe that Wade's MCU debut will be far more integral to Phase 5 and beyond than we first realized.

Deadpool 3 was scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2024, but the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike will likely cause a delay. Though nothing has been made official, the trades believe the film will be pushed back to July.

@JonAwesome - I think that one might just be it, with Logan aiming his claws very close to his jaw or head while Deadpool tries his best to appear as lovey-dovey as possible while also pointing a gun to his head and the TVA/Fox-Xmen are on both sides of the poster.

Wow now I really want to see it like that. XD Good prediction.

Levy comes across as a good dude in all of his interviews. While he may not be the most inspired choice, I can definitely see why they want to work with him. His level of excitement, respect, and positive attitude give me hope that we're going to at the very least get something that's a great deal of fun.

@RedFury - If the guy really does his job well, I would see him as an option to work at Alpha Flight. Also, Levy is Canadian and you know that Feige will choose a Canadian for Canada's first mutant team.

So does that mean the Wolverine in this film is the same one from Logan? If that's is true I guess there is some truth to those comics Laura had. Logan was set 2029 and I guess (in the MCU universe as least) this could be set close to maybe 2026 a few years before Logan. I say that because The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was set in 2025 which means that Vol. 3 (which came out this year) would be set in 2026 too. I kind of assumed this wolverine was a variant like maybe from Earth-838.

@tb86 - I predict he gets taken from his timeline between the happy ending of Days of Future Past, set in 2023, and the tragically unhappy events of Logan, set in 2029. He gets stuck in the MCU for a bit, joins a multiversal team of Avengers and fights and defeats Kang, or the Council of Kangs, and then gets returned to his timeline at the end prior to the whole post-SW "soft reboot" of the MCU. This will be doubly sad because the audience knows he's going back to his timeline to die.. maybe even Deadpool knows it, and tells him this... and then in the most characteristically Wolverine moment ever, he lights a cigar and shrugs, "We all gotta die sometime, Wade" and goes through the damn portal like a boss. Boom! That's what I hope to see anyway.

RedFury - 10/31/2023, 6:15 PM
@Jackraow21 - you definitely presented it in a cool way. But I kind of hope that it's a variant of Wolverine rather than the one we know from the fox franchise. Or at the very least a branched time line they pluck him out of.

Watching the film Logan, knowing that he actually went through the multiverse and etc, would make it feel strange to me. It would kind of impact Mangolds film in a way he didn't intend it to.
Jackraow21
Jackraow21 - 10/31/2023, 6:27 PM
@RedFury - Not really IMO. The same dude time traveled in DoFP, albeit in a different manner. He's seen alternate timelines already, fought evil mutants, ninjas, soldiers, and killer robots in the FOX films. And perhaps some of the fights he gets in during his stint in the 616 MCU actively contribute to the wear and tear on his body that we see by the time we're at the events of the Logan film even... a fight with the Hulk, or an evil future version of him (Maestro), for example, could do that.

I don't think it impacts Mangold's film at all, other than being one more of the many adventures he went on between 2023 and 2029. At least as I see it. In fact, if handled right, it could be really cool.

RedFury - 10/31/2023, 6:48 PM
@Jackraow21 - all good points for sure. I just can't help but feel tying into a movie that was made several years before Deadpool 3 and etc. Is strange narratively. I'm expected to believe that Wolverine is going to go on living his life in the same way to lead him into the plot of Logan, after he's been through different time lines, seen multiple versions of himself, and saved the existence of time, so on and so forth? It just doesn't sit with me unless they can write a really good reason for it. I'm of course open to whatever happens but I still hope its a variant of some sort so that they avoid adding any confusion to the fox-verse.

Again though, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Order66 - 10/31/2023, 7:01 PM
@tb86 - he’s either going to be the same Logan from the X film universe or a variant of Logan. My guess is that it’s the same Logan from the X film universe.
Order66
Order66 - 10/31/2023, 7:03 PM
@Jackraow21 - exactly. Logan is actually used to time traveling and alternate universes so I believe this is the Logan from the X movies and he gets picked up after waking up in the X mansion in DOFP. So these events happen between DOFP ending and Logan.

Jackraow21 - 10/31/2023, 7:19 PM
@Order66 - That's what I'm thinking. Could be wrong, though, and he's just another variant, like Professor X in Doctor Strange 2. But I don't feel the audience has the level of investment in some variant that they do FOX's version, hence why he's the "prime" version who is chosen (if that other rumor is true about why he ends up in the 616 MCU and in Secret Wars as part of the multiversal Avengers). I also think the version wearing the yellow suit is a variant that Deadpool fights, but maybe the "prime" FOX version takes it and wears it. Or maybe he wears a different suit, like the brown and tan one. That would be even better IMO. I've always preferred that color scheme to the bright yellow, personally.

I think Deadpool III works perfectly fine, especially with the claw scratch logo. But maybe just "Weapon X" could work since it encapsulates both Deadpool and Wolverine. The X also applies to Hugh Jackman's 10th time playing the part.

Well ofcourse it's canon. Since everything is in multiverse. And I kinda hope they use that to explain all he inconsistencies in the X-Men chronology (which I suppose are canon itself, going by the Official Timeline book that has Miss Minutes explain such inconsistencies)

SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 10/31/2023, 6:15 PM
@WeaponXCII - Branched timelines. Logan happened. Everything before it happened or is happening in alternative timelines within the same universe. Loki Season 1 explains this. The TVA would clip the branches in their sacred timeline to prevent variants and alternative possibilities. There is no TVA that we know of in the Fox Universe. So their branches are completely a mess.

bkmeijer1 - 10/31/2023, 6:30 PM
@WeaponXCII - with the multiverse, anything is canon. I guess none of the FoX-Men movies are canon to the so-called Sacred Timeline though

@WeaponXCII - yeah, they have this weird concept of saying everything is Canon to the mcu when it's just another universe.

Freshman year was considered Canon to the mcu despite having clear deviations like Peter being recruited by Norman Osborne.
