Pixar Returns To The Top Of The Box Office As INSIDE OUT 2 Opens To A Joyous $295 Million Worldwide

After a rough few years which has seen its movies sent to streaming or underperform in theaters (Lightyear and Elemental), Inside Out 2 has propelled Pixar back to the top of the worldwide box office.

Pixar's Inside Out 2 has sent the studio back to #1 with a massive $155 million opening weekend in North America. Not only has this helped restore Pixar's reputation after a rough few years courtesy of the pandemic (and ousted Disney CEO Bob Chapek), but it comes at a time when theaters are desperate for box office hits.

As we first explained on Toonado.com, Inside Out 2 easily has topped the year's previous biggest debuts: Dune: Part Two ($82.5 million) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($80 million) by almost double.

It's also the first movie since last July's Barbie to open north of $100 million in the U.S. However, this news means there's a strong likelihood that Pixar will prioritise sequels moving forward instead of the original stories which put them on the map (Toy Story 5 is already in development).

Overseas, Inside Out 2 opened to $140 million from 38 international markets, giving the movie a massive $295 million worldwide debut. Is a $1 billion total gross possible? The sky may be the limit for this one in the weeks ahead.

Recently, Pixar's Chief Creative Officer Peter Docter acknowledged, "If this doesn't do well at the theater, I think it just means we're going to have to think even more radically about how we run our business."

It's not just Pixar the movie was crucial for either. When we spoke to executive producer Al Jean about the chances of a sequel to The Simpsons Movie, he said, "There’s talk and I think something will happen. It’s tough for the entire animation business right now to know what the best path is. I think we want to see how the animated films do this summer."

"There are a couple of great ones coming out and, I’m all for animation, so I’m hoping the genre comes back in full theatrically. It’s bigger than The Simpsons; it’s a question for the whole genre."

Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as Headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions.

Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment show up.

The voice cast includes Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black, Phyllis Smith, Ayo Edebiri, Lilimar, Grace Lu, Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Diane Lane, Kyle MacLachlan, Paul Walter Hauser and Yvette Nicole Brown.

Inside Out 2 is directed by Kelsey Mann from a screenplay by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein and story by Mann and LeFauve, and is now playing in theaters.

The movie was a lot of fun! I loved how they described puberty and how those new emotions intermix. My kids loved it

After an awful 2023, something tells me Disney is about to have a very very good 2024.

@Moriakum - they actually had a strong year last year. The only reason why they took second at the BO was they released 17 films compared to universal 24, and even by then it was only an $80mm difference. It's what helped drive the stock price up this year tbh.

@Itwasme - I thought 2023 had been worse for Disney. Guess I was wrong.

Itwasme - 6/17/2024, 1:49 PM
@Moriakum - for them it was bad, but honestly not all bad compared to their peers. It's why I was always wondering about overall BO vs any single company, and how much value is there in streaming - because it seems like that model hasn't been figured out yet.

@Moriakum - We'll see, this is the only thing Disney got going this year other than "Deadpool and Wolverine"
so far.

@SteelGunZ - They also got Moana 2. I believe Moana 2 will do good at the BO.

@Moriakum - Oh yeah, I forgot about Moana 2 and you're right, it will be good.

Wasn’t people just saying Disney was “dead” and all that tough talk?

Weren’t people boycotting them or something? 🤔

Another hit for the dynasty. Effortlessly.

I really enjoyed this movie, even if Joys entire character arc is basically just a complete repeat from the first film.

What's that? People don't want to go to the movies, you say?

What do you know, a disney film without gender politics. Or did i just miss it? 😅
SATW42
SATW42 - 6/17/2024, 1:23 PM
@vectorsigma - One could choose to read the fact that Riley is the only character to have both "male" and "female" emotions to mean more than it does.

The creators have discounted this saying it was simply easier to convey we were in other peoples brains by having them all look the same, because ytou spend so little time in their brains and Riley is the only main character.

However as somone on these boards who is obsessed with quoting media literacy constantly points out, you can still look at something a certain way even if it wasn't the creators intent.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 6/17/2024, 1:36 PM
@SATW42 - my first time hearing about this point.

Imo, it is just riley being the main protagonist so the handling was special with her, thus having such emition designs.
SATW42
SATW42 - 6/17/2024, 1:50 PM
@vectorsigma - You have to at least scratch your head when they say it was easier for the sake of time, when they then make a sequel short that spends ALOT of time in the Dad and rileys dates head, and then it starts to at least make you think that it's either a choice, or the rules of the world are slightly borken.
SATW42
SATW42 - 6/17/2024, 1:56 PM
@vectorsigma - to be clear, I think it's as simple as the creators say. I do think as they make more content the choice becomes a plot hole, and if someone wants to read it another way, they wouldn't necessarily be "wrong"

@vectorsigma - And wasn't right-wing cancel culture supposed to destroy Disney? 🤔
GameOn
GameOn - 6/17/2024, 2:13 PM
@vectorsigma - Does Disney usually mess with "gender politics?"
BaddestOptics
BaddestOptics - 6/17/2024, 2:58 PM
@vectorsigma - when your definition of gender politics is "there's a lesbian couple in the background that are so insignificant to the story that we can skip two seconds of film for the overseas market" maybe you're more the problem at that point.
GameOn
GameOn - 6/17/2024, 4:58 PM
@BaddestOptics - That's kind of what I suspected they meant but they haven't replied to me. Either that or showing that women can do things that men can do/addressing issues women face. It has to be one of those because Disney hasn't gone near trans at all (unless you count Morph from X-Men 97 being gender fluid).

@Izaizaiza - they're trying so hard yelling at the wall lmao
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 6/17/2024, 7:59 PM
@BaddestOptics - if it is insignificant, why put some effort in shoving it in? Because Disney wants a message sent so that is a problem and you not recognizing it as such is a bigger problem
Kadara
Kadara - 6/17/2024, 9:25 PM
@Izaizaiza - After claiming they were against cancel culture and calling everyone identity politics and snowflakes. And demanding certain people get locked up. Honestly, that whole side is just one big irony, I sometimes wonder if maybe it's just one big Hollywood production.
BaddestOptics
BaddestOptics - 6/17/2024, 10:42 PM
@vectorsigma - it's corporate lip service but please throw on the tin foil hat and enlighten what "the message" is.
GameOn
GameOn - 6/17/2024, 10:51 PM
@vectorsigma - The message being… that being not straight is normal/okay? I still don’t understand what you’ve been trying to get at
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 6/18/2024, 9:12 AM
@Kadara - As far as I can tell, cancel culture is all the political right has to offer. Well, that and fascism.

BaddestOptics

@kirbyfan - I'm really fascinated by what a bunch of religious zealots and sweaty incels that yell nonstop about cancel culture have to say on what you can and can't say in a movie.

Not quite as good as the first, but as a parent with a kid going into teenage years, it definitely hit that same level of timelines insight the first one did. If they make a third, I think they need to go bigger as far as concepts go, just so the concept doesn't get worn out
