THE INCREDIBLES And FINDING NEMO Sequels In The Works At Pixar; INSIDE OUT 2 TV Series Revealed

With Pixar also struggling to get back on the right track, a new report - which includes comments from key executives - sheds light on the studio’s plans, including sequels and a spin-off TV series...

Similar to Marvel Studios, it's been a tough few years for Pixar. The studio's movies were sent straight to Disney+ during the pandemic and a couple of box office flops have tarnished the brand to a point where they're now in the process of rebuilding their reputation.

In a new Bloomberg report (via Toonado.com), more is revealed about how the studio is finally pivoting away from streaming to focus its efforts on theatrical titles. However, we're still getting at least one more TV show: Dream Productions is "set in the Inside Out universe of Riley's dreams" and expected to premiere in 2025.

The hope is that Inside Out 2 will be a hit and it won't be the last sequel we see from Pixar in the coming years. According to the report, "every hit of yesterday is being considered for a reboot, with Finding Nemo and The Incredibles regarded as particularly strong candidates for new titles."

Pixar President Jim Morris chimed in to explain that they intend to make three movies every two years, "with every other title a sequel or spinoff and the rest standalone concepts or potential seeds for new franchise."

This confirms we're getting a greater level of output from a studio that previously released one movie a year at most.

Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter also shared some comments with the site, suggesting the Finding Nemo franchise will be among the first they revisit (no great surprise after that and Finding Dory made a combined $2 billion at the worldwide box office). The Incredibles is also on the table.

"Where else have we not gone in the ocean? The ocean’s a big place," he says. "I think there’s a lot of opportunity there. We’re kind of fishing around [Laughs]."

Before fretting too much about what this means for the Pixar brand, rest assured that studio executives are well aware of how this could be perceived. Pixar's Senior Vice President of Development, Lindsey Collins, admitted as much while recalling a conversation with her son.

"The other day, I was like, 'What if I told you we were making an Incredibles 3?' And he was like, 'Money grab.' And I was like 'F***,'" Collins said. "Sequels are a double-edged sword, because the audience can be brutal and so quick to judge. Unless they’re worthy."

Last summer, Disney CEO Bob Iger shared his thoughts on Pixar's recent struggles. "There were three Pixar releases in a row that went direct to streaming, in part because of — mostly because of COVID. And I think that may have created an expectation in the audience that they’re going to eventually be on streaming and probably quickly, and there wasn’t an urgency."

"And then I think there was some," the executive continued, "I think you’d have to agree that there were some creative misses, as well."

Stay tuned for more on Pixar's future as it comes in.

@dracula - I've had this logline for a third movie that saw Dash (now in college) and Violet (starting her first job) taking over for their parents and the entire plot being about parents learining to let go of their job as sole protectors and letting the kids take over.

Iger on his sequel speedrun, remember when he said they were better than just making constant sequels? Remember when Disney put their sequels straight to video? Lmao

@bobevanz - This.^

Disney is, much like modern Hollywood itself, a creative void.
There are no original or creative ideas. Just about everything is a reboot, prequel, or a sequel.

Luckily, they've left my favorite Pixar dude alone (for now).

@Feralwookiee - I apologise for willing it into existence, but I think there will be a prequel about the origin of Eve's, Wall-E's and Earth's polution

@bkmeijer1 @Feralwookiee - Don't forget about the fans' thirst for knowing what happened to WALL-E's and EVE's respective robotic brethren. I mean, obviously they weren't one-off productions. Surely there must have originally been thousands of each of those robot models, especially as Earth went to shit. So what happened to them? Where are they now? What's their story? Surely this justifies AT LEAST a prequel movie and likely at least one, if not two, D+ series.

As for the reason for Earth's pollution, eh, just look out the window (if you live in the US anyway). No prequel needed. Supersize me!

What does that line about a reboot mean? Like creative rework? Or actual reboot?

Although Incredibles 2 wasn't as great 1 (and how could it?), it was still a worthy addition and fun watch. While I think Pixar has certainly maxed out it's IP with Toy Story and Finding Nemo, I'd definitely welcome an Incredibles 3

Think both Pixar and Disney Animation should make three movies each two years each. With atleast three out of those six conbined being originals.

Now that I think about, a yearly repeating cycle for I Disney movie releases could work:
- January: Searchlight
- February: Marvel
- March: Animation/Remake
- April: 20th Century Studios
- May: Marvel
- June: Animation
- July: Marvel
- August: Searchlight
- September: 20th Century Studios
- October: Searchlight
- November: Animation
- December: 20th Century Studios/Lucasfilm

@OriginalGusto1 - think I lost more time on typing it than thinking it out.

Marvel, Animation, Avatar and Star Wars movies are already released in those momths, and others are kinda just thrown in at random.

I considered both Finding Dory and Incredibles 2 to be mediocre so I’m not all that excited about either of these. I’d prefer they do more original content.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 5/31/2024, 9:21 PM
@MrDandy - They did do original content in Elements and Strange Worlds and nobody saw them ---...

Oh wait, you meant GOOD original films, that's too difficult, so here's more sequels, prequels and requels.
RealTurner
RealTurner - 5/31/2024, 9:41 PM
@EgoEgor - Strange was Disney not Pixar and Elemental was a success in the end. I would also say it is good; but it tripped at the "hook" stage, just making Zootopia with elements instead of animals didn't have much impact in the trailers for sure.
