THE MANDALORIAN Director Bryce Dallas Howard To Helm Female-Led FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR Reboot

Bryce Dallas Howard, who helmed two episodes of The Mandalorian, is set to return to Disney+ to direct a female-led reboot of classic '80s children's adventure movie, Flight of the Navigator.

A Flight of the Navigator reboot is moving forward at Disney, and Bryce Dallas Howard has signed on to helm the project.

The original movie was released back in 1986, and followed a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by a UFO and reappears eight years later at the exact same age and with no memories of what happened. It was a modest success, but never really achieved the same classic status as the likes of E.T. or The Neverending Story. It has developed a cult following over the years, however.

This new take on the story will feature a female protagonist, but nobody has been cast in the role yet. The reboot is being developed for Disney+, with John Swartz, Howard’s partner at production company Nine Muses, and Justin Springer on board as producers.

Howard is, of course, best known for her work in front of the camera, but she has begun to take on more directorial gigs of late. She started out with shorts and documentaries, before taking the helm of two episodes of The Mandalorian, and also directed at least one instalment of the upcoming The Book of Boba Fett. Flight of the Navigator will be her first non-documentary feature.

Howard is set to reprise the role of Clair Dearing for Jurassic World: Dominion, which hits theaters next year.

is this really something that needs a reboot? Does anyone even remember it. Ive only heard of it once.

@dracula - Really? It has a massive cult following, Peewee Herman's finest movie. Me and my peers saw it countless times in our childhoods. Is it important that it's female lead, no not really. All you're doing is swapping the gender of a 12 year old. It would make [frick] all difference to the story.

@FASELI - Agreed gender swap won't effect the story at all. I used to watch the shit out of this movie when I was a kid. Hope it turns out good.

@dracula - So let me get this straight. You're asking if this needs a reboot. If it really needs a reboot. It's something you only heard of once, and asking if anyone remembers it. I think that would qualify it for a good candidate for a reboot.

@dracula - That's a good question.

I feel many films didn't really want for a reboot (Psycho, Total Recall, Robocop, Ben Hur, etc.).

If the are still wildly popular (despite their age), I would prefer they be left as is.

It's the more-or-less "perfect" films that arguably shouldn't be touched.

If hardly anyone born in the last 30-40 years is familiar with the film, most of them probably aren't going to in the future, so a re-boot seems warranted. Especially if many feel it needed improvement.

@BlackBeltJones - Me, neither, so a remake seems warranted. Especially if there is much room for improvements.

It's the more-or-less "perfect" films that I would Hollywood rather not touch.

Why not a female-led original property? I don't understand the current trend of wanting to genderbend/ turn every single IP out there female-led. It feels disingenuous and cynical.
I dunno, just feels like studios trying to capitalise/monetize feminism to me

If there's a female led (soft-)reboot I wanna see her direct, it's the Rocketeer. Never heard of this, so it might as well be a new project for me

@Waddles - still the best dance group for calling Trump a monster.

Actually, I think you could make a movie out of that
