Kevin Feige Discusses DOCTOR STRANGE's Chronological Place In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Offering an idea of when Doctor Strange will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's timeline, Kevin Feige also talks here about whether the other Phase 3 movies will be told in order and if they're planning to drop the origin story aspect of these stories. Read on for details...

Other than Daredevil, Ant-Man is the first superhero origin story to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since The Avengers assembled (on Earth anyway), so just how much of an impact does that have on how the movies are going to play out moving forwards? Well, just like how the Battle of New York was the driving force for Matt Murdock, it seems that there being a team of superheroes in the world will play into a certain Sorcerer Surpreme's story as well.

Talking to Zap2it, Feige revealed that The Avengers being in existence will be something they, "acknowledge to a certain degree more so in other films. 'Doctor Strange,' for instance, is kind of [in his own world]. He's in New York, but he's a surgeon and he's got his own thing going on, and when he has to try to fix his hands he goes on another journey." Does that mean it will be something of a standalone movie then? "All these movies are connected, so they inhabit -- as the comics did -- the same universe. Like Ant-Man, Doctor Strange lives in a world where aliens came out over Grand Central Station. Again, he also is a brain surgeon. When he's in the operating room, he's not thinking about those other things. He's working on what he's working on."

As for the future of origin stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Marvel Studios boss wouldn't reveal too much, but did drop a pretty interesting tease about shaking things up moving forwards. "'Ant-Man' and 'Panther' and 'Captain Marvel' going forward -- assuming they're all chronological -- will have that as a backdrop, which to us is fun." What do you guys think?

Ant-Man isn't an origin story. He has existed since the 60s in the MCU.

So the "Stephen Strange" reference in Winter Soldier was nothing more than a coincidental name drop? That's kind of dissapointing.

BodieBroadus - 6/30/2015, 6:06 AM
Well technically it's an origin story, just for Scott Lang.

And presumably Ant-Man will feature flashbacks to Hank Pyms days

^I wouldn't say it's just a 'coincidental name drop'. They were rattling off names of people that were potential/real threats to Hydra. If Strange is a good man, a surgeon who helps SHIELD or the leaders of our country in one way or another, I would say that is opposing Hydra.

Yeah Ant-Man is definitely an origin story. We haven't seen or met Hank or Scott yet. Hank will have flashbacks to his 'origin'/beginnings, and the film itself is the origin of when Scott becomes a hero.

Also I don't feel like anything Feige said has anything to do with 'origins' and Strange's chronological order in the MCU, like it says in the title of the article....

@YeezusWept & The algorithm Zola made predicts future threats not just current ones like Tony Stark. So Strange is for sure a treat to Hydra if Sitwell has the name on the top of his head

@burningblue52

That makes sense, thanks.

@JarrethHunt

You're right, I totally dismissed the prediction part of the algorithm. The helicarriers targeting Avengers Tower always stuck in my mind so I assumed current threats had a higher priority.

I feel that in some way, the Dr Strange name drop in Winter Soldier will not have been in vain. Marvel had to have known it had plans to make a dr. strange film at that time. So really, I think this is all in their plan.

[frick] Yes!!!!

Doctor Strange!!!!

This shit is awesome, can't wait for this

And, I think this confirms the origin story, or at least flashbacks of him as a surgeon, which rocks, I love Strange's origin

What's the point of referencing Strange in TWS when he doesn't have any powers?

It'd be cool if they made Strange one of the medical services and neurosurgeon who served during the Battle of New York, depending on what time he's established as Doctor Strange.

He's a genius and that posed a threat to HYDRA; Project Insight was all about eliminating potential threats, which included people with high SAT score to people like Bruce Banner and Tony Stark.

So, Hydra was afraid of what he might do with some scalpels and clamps? Makes sense...

Ahhhh....the elephant in the room. Growing up ALL superheros had secret identities. So far, none of the Marvel U film heroes have alter egos (Netflix's Daredevil is the only one so far to do this; does Hulk count?). Perhaps the events of Civil War re-create a need for heroes to live with secret identities. This may be the backdrop.

My theory is that Stephen Strange's story starts out in the 30's and his young age is explained as being preserved by magic.

Just like in the comics.

For geeks, none of you seemed to pay attention during Winter Soldier.

Project Insight was an algorithm that analyzed people based on their past, present, and POTENTIAL FUTURE behavior. Based on the intel the algorithm had on Strange, it could tell, even before he goes on his hero's journey, that he is predisposed toward heroic acts and morality.

Think of it this way. Facebook or Amazon can already almost predict which articles you will read or which items you will buy. Insight basically looked at Strange and determined, yeah, this guy is very likely going to be a problem one day.
ClumsyToaster
ClumsyToaster - 6/30/2015, 7:07 AM
@AlexanderLykins
He would be on the list, Sitwell wouldn't mention him though. They're gonna have to go the comics route where Doc Strange is the same age as Cap but his age is preserved by magic.
ClumsyToaster
ClumsyToaster - 6/30/2015, 7:09 AM
@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon
It'd make sense for him to be on Insight's list, not for Agent Sitwell to bring up his name personally.

On the Kenneth Branagh rumor.

"Not true," responded Feige, when the notion of Branagh's return was put to him "I don’t know where that came from."

Sounds like a certain someone * "cough cough ... HH " * was outed again lol
