Marvel Studios Casts THE MARTIAN Star As 'Wong' In DOCTOR STRANGE

Well, this is unexpected! Most of us had assumed that Marvel would avoid including Wong in Doctor Strange due to an Asian man being portrayed as a manservant to a rich white doctor in 2016 is all sorts of f***ed up, but they've found an actor for the role, and you can get more details here...

Calling Wong a fan-favourite character might be a stretch, but a lot of people would have been disappointed if he'd been left out of Doctor Strange. It's a good job then that The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Benedict Wong (The Martian) is set to take on the role of the Sorcerer Supreme's manservant and best friend. While details about this version of the character haven't been revealed, you have to believe that we'll be getting a contemporary version, and not the racist sterotype seen in many of the character's earliest adventures (he knows kung-fu!). Doctor Strange: The Oath - which seems to have inspired quite a bit of this movie so far - is a good place to look for an example of how great seeing Wong on screen could be, and Wong - that's confusing - joins a cast which also includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen. He's also starred in Netflix's Marco Polo, Prometheus, and Kick-Ass 2.

Wait, it's not Matt Damon?!

Seriously, great news. Never watched that Marco Polo Netflix series but he was hilarious as the flustered, overworked scientist in The Martian.

The FIRST Asian actor cast in an adaptation of a comic series that's supporting cast is mostly Asian.

Marvel [frick]ed up big time with this one, diversity wise. Hopefully the movie is decent. But seriously, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One? SMH.

And Benedict and Benedict will be in a film where Benedict Wong's Wong is played by Benedict?

@BatmanHeisenberg The Ancient One is such an outdated racial stereotype.

Also, if you claim to be a feminist, then gender-bending The Ancient One is such a great move, especially when the character is being played by the great Tilda Swinton. I have my issues with them not casting an asian actress, but you can't win all the battles.

Finally, diversity is great (I'm asian for god's sake) but doesn't determine the quality of a film.

Its not ok to put an Asian as a demigod (the Ancient One), but its ok to put an Asian as a manservant.

So they're casting as filming goes along I see. He must not have that huge if a part, then again who's to say he won't.

@KurtWagner1225
That's really how the Ancient one should be handled in my opinion, but no matter what people are going to spin this in a way that somehow Marvel hates Asian people, even though if they did they JUST wouldn't put any Asian actors in their movies at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure at times Marvel has went out of their way to pander to the Chinese market, particularly Iron Man 3 which showed scenes in China but for only Chinese audiences I believe. Still, we need some more diversity, but the universe is growing slowly even at 3 movies per year. The fans need to have a little more patience.

@rabid Yeah, nothing official yet (yet to see any footage) but having an iteration of Night Nurse (rumored to be Rachel McAdams' character) shows they might be borrowing a bit from that miniseries.

idk, a bit skeptical about this casting. I guess time will tell whether or not he was the Wong choice.
