EDITORIAL: How To Make A SUPERMAN/BATMAN Film

How will WB and Zack Snyder make anticipated team up come to life? Your guess is as good as mine! I don't pretend to know what they ARE doing but I do know what they SHOULD do. Make the jump to hear my take!

It has been a while since I've written an editorial, so let me apologize if I'm a bit rusty. Why did I decide to write this now? Well, I've been wanting to talk about my take on it and who doesn't want a chance to win that half a grand big G is offering right now?!?!

Now, lets get down to business. Superman and Batman are one of the world's most iconic characters and while many stories have had them team up, there have always been problems with it.

The Problems

1. Superman And Batman's Power Levels Differ Too Greatly.
Lets face it. A ton of ninjas to Batman might be slightly difficult to overcome. Yet throw Superman in the mix, it would be nothing to him. Seriously, Batman has a problem with one clown, while Superman is fighting an alien attack by himself. The question is how to bring villains in that can be a threat to both while not making it too easy for Superman and not making it impossible for Batman.

2. Fighting Each Other.
I expect they will exchange a few blows with each other. Much like Thor and Iron Man did in Marvel's The Avengers last summer. But I don't want them fighting each other the whole movie. This was the problem with Batman vs. Superman script. (Read that here.) It was about them fighting. The movie should be about them teaming up. The team up is the important part, it's not just to see them fight.

3. Villains.
Sure both Superman and Batman's rogue's gallery is jam packed with evil doers to have them go up against. The problem is how to introduce them into the film.

Now those are the problems WB and Zack Snyder have to face. How should they work it out though? Read on.

How it could work.

1. Superman/Batman 1-6.
Base it off of Jeph Loeb's fantastic first six issues of his run. Why? Unlike The Dark Knight Returns (which is said to have influenced the Superman/Batman film) this is both Superman's and Batman's story. While I love The Dark Knight Returns it is much more Batman's story than Superman's and I don't feel they should go that route, yet at least.

(Note: For those that want to read this story find that here for the animated film based on the book find that here.)

2. Villains.
How to introduce villains? Arrow. We have Deathstroke, Shado. By the time this season is up I expect Slade to have some differences with Oliver. That still leaves another whole season to explore on top of that! So who knows you could easily weave in at least mentions of Lex Luthor, The League of Assassins and major players in the DC universe. Some of the villains could be created by Lex Luthor to kill Superman and Batman in the film.

Here is the best list of villains I could come up with that could challenge each hero:
Deathstroke
Deadshot
Lady Shiva (introduced in Arrow)
Giganta (introduced in Superman/Batman)
Silver Banshee (introduced in Superman/Batman)
Black Spider (introduced in Arrow)
Shrike (introduced in Arrow)
Nightshade (introduced in Superman/Batman or Arrow)
Parasite (introduced in Superman/Batman)
Killer Frost (introduced in Superman/Batman)

3. The Plan.
Clark knew him from Smallville, Bruce knew him as a business partner, but when their old friend Lex Luthor becomes president he shows his darker side. When Superman and Batman cross the wrong paths with Lex Luthor he frames them and declares them public enemies. Finding out each other's secrets Clark and Bruce must work together to clear their name and defend themselves from Lex's assassins and newly created metahumans.

That would be the gist of the story.

4. Future.
I would keep Lex as president so that he could keep playing an important role in the DC Universe. Imagine him finding that Brainiac was coming to Earth, and striking a deal with him to help him capture Superman in exchange for not destroying Earth. Plus any criminals that the heroes capture Lex could give a pardon to.

5. Title.
The title shouldn't be Batman vs. Superman. We want them to team up. Not just to fight. But I've explained that before. I feel it should be Superman/Batman: World's Finest. Why? Because it would please fans. Superman should be first for three reasons: 1. It's a sequel to Man Of Steel. 2. The comic is called Superman/Batman. 3. With so many games, animated films and TV shows it's obvious Batman isn't going out of popularity anytime soon. Superman needs his chance to shine. Batman is already popular.

WB needs to do this. This is their chance to do something truly different and to stop being looked at as copying Marvel.

Kinda like Man of Steel, and The Dark Knight, it should not mention their names at all, and be simply World's Finest.

My favorite comic I ever brought was Superman/Batman 3. As a kid, what more could you ask? Superman & Batman in the same comic? Then I heard it and it was so great. Grundy, Freeze, Mongul, Grodd, and so many other villains fighting Superman & Batman. The cover to that is so [frick]ing iconic. I have brought the novel and its my favorite comic. Still have 3. Bit wrinkled, little rips in the book but still great.

If there was ever a movie based off Public Enemies, that would be my childhood wish.

I say they don't mix the movies with their tv shows and they name the film Man of Steel: World's Finest

world's finest wouldn't mean much to a non-comicbook person, that's the only problem i see with the title

another thing if you see: "BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN" or something like that, 'cause everybody knows who batman and superman is, even though batman vs. superman isn't that good of a title.

@alibaba

I see your point, but I don't think many people knew that The Dark Knight is Batman and Man of Steel is Superman. If they do name it World's Finest, the marketing team has to make sure there is a logo on everything and make sure that people know it is both Supes and Bats.

"Batman has a problem with one clown, while Superman is fighting an alien attack by himself"???

Well guess what, Superman has problems with a power hunger billionaire yet completely normal HUMAN too.. I don't see people bitching about that.

No to World's Finest as the title (because, no, general audiences would not understand it, and because too many fanboys want it, and fanboys are almost always wrong.) Maybe you use "Man of Steel: World's Finest", but I don't really like that either. I don't have an idea for a title, except that either Man of Steel or Superman should be in it, and should come first.

And no to Lex Luthor being president. That was a stupid thing for DC to do, in comics or movies. And I don't think general audiences would like it either. Maybe, in the last Superman movie of a series before a reboot, you have him run and either win at the end of the movie or leave it vague, but I just don't like the idea of Superman's main enemy being president (it's bad enough that we got Obama in real life, lol.)

But, despite disagreeing with part of the article, I will say that it was well thought out and better written than many editorials, and should be on main.

Thank the [frick] Christ you guys are all over this movie. If it weren't for everybody's snot-nosed, captain-obvious-esque soap-boxes, I'd REALLY worry that this potential multi-billion-dollar movie, nay, EVENT might crash and burn like a guinea pig driving a Formula 1.

I seriously don't know whats more annoying at this point to me as a common visitor to this site: The bullshit transparent surge of bullshit editorials in response to this bulshit $500 prize, which I might add is bullshit (congratulations, you'll be able to afford a used lawn mower, hope it was worth it)OR the way every possible detail about this film has already been clumsily cast out into the ether by every self-righteous dickless CBM-film-nerd who all apparently have the united goal of ruining its ambition before it starts.

I know its a cliche, but I hope you all accidentally slip and fall on a tranny whore and contract HIV.

Didn't read. Please stop writing editorials like you know how to make a blockbuster movie...you have no clue! If you can make better movies...why aren't you? I can't begin to tell you how many of the same editorial I've seen on here! It's getting ridiculous

Seriously, even the [frick]ing title of this pisses me off.

"EDITORIAL #395,737,485 - HOW TO MAKE A BATMAN / SUPERMAN FILM"

Jesus. And skip all the "everyone's entitled to their opinion" pussy-shit. Trust me, I'm unfortunately aware.

I'm arguing the fact that the author of this is attempting to claim to have helpful input towards a project of this magnitude while simultaneously broadcasting the message that the collective conscious on this site is equivalent to that of a three-year-old that thinks its actually controlling daddy's BMW with its Fischer-Price steering wheel car seat attachment.

Personally, I don't REALLY want a Superman V.S. Batman movie - If anything, I want a Superman AND Batman movie, something along the lines of World's Finest, here, ya know?... *cool*/P :)

There's no reason for Clark Kent to have known Luthor from his days in Smallville. This is a chance to do a new continuity, not simply ape "Smallville." Having Clark and Lex know each other was fine for a WB series, but they're adults now. Let's introduce Lex the way he was introduced in the comics - or in "Lois & Clark."

WB should stay as far away from Frank Miller as possible unless it's their aim to piss off every Superman fan on the planet.

Jeph Loeb's take on their team-up is 100x better than Miller's. Eff Frank Miller.

The only thing I agree with is the title-World's Finest, the rest of the ideas here just feel like rehashed fanboy wet dreams. What we need for these characters to work well is a new cinematic take on Bats' and Supe's dynamic. You mention that Batman would have difficulty taking out a bunch of Ninja ( plural stays ninja BTW) but really that's something Baleman would have a problem with. The feeling i'm getting about this movie is that they're trying to give us the Batman we all came to know from the comics and cartoons. Why put Batman on screen with Supes if he can't hold is own? I mean, if he's gonna be depicted as a " mere mortal" wimp in a movie with one super then imagine how lame he'll seem in a movie filled with supers (JL). No my friend, the Bats we're getting in this movie is gonna be badass.
As for the villains, in order for Batman to prove he belongs in the JL we need a villain that for reasons inherent to who Superman is Supes can't deal with on his own. So we're gonna get a multifaceted villian, both physically capable and intellectually proficient enough to challenge both of them. Think Bane ( minus the Talia's b!tch twist) plus financial means. We might even get a villainous team-up.
BTW, regarding the "VS" element, I really don't think WB wanna alienate any of the hardcore Bats or Supes fans Bby making one beat the other but I do think the two should have some sort of standoff. Ideally I'd like to see Supes try to strong arm Bruce and then, having seemingly gotten to upper hand, we find that Bruce coulda taken him out but only allowed him his " victory" to gain his trust. Similar to the army custody situation in MOS. It would be a funny but badass scene showing us that this is the "GAWD DAAM BATMAN", not broken and cancer-voiced Baleman.

Maybe you're new here.

Y'see, trudy, really reams boys, 69 balls licked, and sack mode are regulars here, and they have a pathological hate of any non-marvel thing that people like.
So- if THEY hate it (the mos2/battfleck movie) then it stands to reason most people will like it (the mos2/batfleck movie).

If you're here anough you'll get to know them.

Bizzaro should be the villain in my opinion. Hear me out.
Luthor using Zod's corpse tries to create, clone, an army of supermen for himself instead the Bizzaro is created. This way you can have bats fight a superman like being. Also, this would give Bats, Luthor, and Supes a reason to find superman's weakness.
