Akira: The Kaneda Short Film from Eye Tape on Vimeo.

We intended on making a “real” live action Akira to the best of our ability. We’ve acknowledged that there are far too many “live action” Akira shorts in which they simulated or rendered Kaneda’s Motorcycle into a scene, but doing so compromised showing Kaneda actually riding it, so we decided on going with an actual Motorcycle. We also wanted to have our own story since too many individuals have attempted to make a live adaptation of the original Anime.

Arbitrary facts about the short film:
# Kaneda’s friend also has the Pill Symbol that he wears.
# In juke box at the bar, there is the “The Doors” Album in there. This was intentional to mimic the original Anime.
# While the drive through the city, spotlights were added to also mimic the actual Anime.
# Kaneda’s Jacket was based off the Manga Version, not the Anime.

I know I am a new name to most of you, but I have been a long time lurker and have enjoyed CBM for the longest time. I am finally showing myself because we all share the same love of Comics and Movies combines. It is nice to meet all of you!

Dude, welcome, and that was [frick]ing amazing. Love the use of the music from the Anime and the bike scenes were expertly shot. Was that supposed to be Kaneda getting killed at the beginning?

IvanKW - 1/25/2010, 7:52 PM
Thanks Ror!
That was supposed to be Kaneda's Friend in the beginning.
The whole Premise of the movie takes place 10 years after the events of Tetsuo's Death. There are only 2 members of Kaneda's Crew left including Kaneda. This is more of a Revenge plot line shown in less than 5 minutes lol. Thanks for watching!

That was pretty well done. Can't really see why people are being negative about this. I thought it captured the style and atmosfear gracefully, seing as did not shot this in a futuristic city and didn't use the bike.

Very nice, salute the effort.
Beginning has a very Mad Max / Toecutter feel.
Love the drums and wooden percussions.

Have the soundtrack, and a DJ buddy of mine took that part and looped it.

Most people have never heard anything like that.

Good job. Pretty nice execution on the technical side. You guys should be proud. However, no dialog?

And SkunkApe....the only people who have never heard music like that are the same people who have never seen Seven Samurai. Maybe they get all their entertainment from Wal Mart?

I think most negative people on here were just expecting some dialog. And if no dialog, maybe a naration or something(i don't know if there was a naration since i'm at work and can't hear shit). This was nicely shot but... it shouldn't need an explanation.

fotc- True, they were a bit too... blunt, i guess. They could have opted for constructive criticism like johan02 did. That's also what i expect from the people commenting on my art. Don't just say it sucks. Say why and contribute ideas to make it better.

Thanks everyone for watching. We appreciate the positive feed backs as well as the well written Negative ones. This was really just a two man team filming this and most money we spent were the 2 Shots of Crown Royal Kaneda drank at the bar. If you are wondering why there was no Dialog and why we didn't show Kaneda's face was because everyone knows what Kaneda looks like and will always have their interpretations to always be that same face. As for the plot Synopsis,
“It is 10 years after the Death of Tetsuo… There are only two gang members left in Kaneda’s crew including himself. Kaneda becomes the very last when his friend gets murdered by the Clown in the short’s beginning, this prompts Kaneda to seek revenge.”

As for the Title of the Short, it is called "Akira: The Kaneda Short". The reason why we still use Akira as part of the Title is because fans like us know it would be attached to the Anime/Manga and putting Kaneda's name in it clearly shows that it is about Kaneda.

As for the Music, I know not all of you like "Rap" or are only into "Rock" music, but if you think of it from a Japanese stand point, that culture listens to a wide variaty of music and most of it is not really "American" Music. You have to remember, Akira is in Neo Tokyo. The "Rap" Song used is by a Japanese Rapper. The song is called “Lost Heaven” which the Artist is talking about the friend he losts. We wanted to use this Song for that same reason.

We are not a big Hollywood Production team, and wouldn't you rather see a Kaneda ride a motorcycle rather than him being positioned in a distance to make the Todd McFarlene Toy look bigger but not ride able? the Original Anime clearly has a lot of memorable scenes with the bikes. Well anyways, It is great to hear all your feed backs. we will consider everything said for or next project. Thank You. :)

Nice. Love the realism while keeping it stylistic to some degree, and I hope you add more background story - don't worry too much about actors looking like the characters.

Here's another Akira short I found:

eyetape

Hey guys, Mark T. here...the director/editor/digital effects guy that worked on this. After reading all the comments all I have to say is that it's great if you like it but if you hate it that's okay too...I'm just happy you all are watching it. I'm going to write a little bit about the motivations behind the decisions made making this short, or trailer, or tribute video (what have you).

This idea I had to make an Akira video was very simple, and like some of the comments state, without depth. It was very much an excercise for me technically to see what I could pull off visually in relation to the feel of the anime.

The motivations behind using Japanese rap music as well as the original was an attempt to blend Eastern and Western influences in the film...hence...a japanese rapper (on a side note in the song he is rapping about a lost friend which fits appropriately)..somewhat like a bridge. Because I was born in the U.S. and have never been to Japan, I wanted to still acknowledge that this was made domestically and not foreign. Also the reason I elected to not use any dialog was because I personally didn't want to hear people speak English and I didn't know anyone available at the time that spoke fluent Japanese.

The above post of the original AKIRA live action trailer was a partial inspiration for this video. I saw what they did and still think it is very resourceful for what they pulled off. For me, it didn't have enough bike riding/fighting and cityscapes so I thought I could round out some of the other "trailers" with these scenes.

Anyways, I'm glad for all the input...it's great to know immediate audience reaction, negative or positive.

Not bad, but i have to say keneda would never ride a 600. He prided himself on the fact that he had the best bike. If you had to do a bike for him it would have been a busha or at least an r1 or gsxr1000. 600 is for girls. lol
