Marvelites vs. Nolanites: An unbiased and objective viewpoint.

I composed this article several months back, but in light of recent bickering, I felt that it might be a good time to re-submit it for everyone to digest.

Editorial Opinion
By GhostZillaRider - Dec 19, 2012 06:12 PM EST
Filed Under: Fan Fic

So, I'm up late reading some of the comments on a new article, and for the umpteenth time, I find that I'm deeply entrenched in a "Marvelite" vs. "Nolanite" debate, which is just getting dumb. As such, I've decided to throw my opinion in, (which I'm not usually compelled to do,) in the hopes that I may be able to bring enough people to see reason, so that being on this site, and, specifically, reading the comments section, becomes enjoyable again.

I'll start by stating that, I am a Marvel fan, through and through. On the whole, I've found the characters in Marvel's camp to be much more fascinating than those created by DC, even though I've questioned where the comics have gone, and are going, on numerous occasions. Let it be stated, for the record, that anyone in need of labeling me, may as well label me a "Marvelite". I, for one, have no use for labels, but I'll put myself out there so that everyone knows where I stand.

That being said, I want to point out the absolute absurdity of "Marvelites" warring with "Nolanites". Here's why;
Nolan has helmed three movies for DC, all of which focus on one primary hero; Batman. For anyone in the Marvel camp to verbally go to war with a "Nolanite", is to automatically admit defeat. How so, you may ask? Well, as a Marvel fan/"Marvelite", you are throwing the entire Marvel universe up against ONE SINGLE HERO!!! You are basically arguing the merits of an entire comic company against one lone character. In that argument, I'm sorry to say, but Batman gets the instant win. I mean, if you are realistically pitting one lone vigilante against the entire Marvel Universe, and you have to argue that one is better than the other, you are actually giving merit to the Batman/DC fans and the so called "Nolanites". There. I've said it. As Marvel fans, we lose.

Now, I'm not completely playing the Devil's Advocate here. As the headline states, this is an unbiased and objective editorial, and as such, I do have something to contribute to the other side of this little debate that's been raging for so long. To all of you "Nolanites" out there, I say this; You only have three great films to cheer about. If you are, indeed, a "Nolanite", the name itself implies that your comic book movie arguments are officially over. Unless Nolan goes back on his word, and continues making these films, (which I personally do not believe that he will,) then you are all left without a cause, and you will be arguing the merits of the Batman trilogy for the next decade, which will cease to hold water very, very quickly. To those of you who are not actually "Nolanites", but simply fans of DC/Batman, Marvel has the undisputed edge in terms of comic book movies. They may not all be gems, but they have become more mainstream, and thus, more successful. DC needs to get their arses in gear if they hope to become a player on the CBM scene. Until such time as that happens, Marvel realistically reigns over the CBM genre.

None of what I've stated is meant to attack, or defend, any one camp. Instead, I write this to illuminate the utter absurdity of continuing with the name calling and pointless ridiculousness that has become the comments section of anything and everything Marvel/DC related. As so many of you have already stated, we all win. The fact that these movies are being held in such high regard, by the mainstream, as well as the critics, just means that our geekness has been completely and utterly validated. What we've all known for years, that comic books are one of the most interesting and entertaining forms of media and escapism, has officially been embraced by the rest of the world. Let's all revel in the glory that is our new kingdom. The world is OUR playground now, and as one user put it, this is our Woodstock. Be grateful to be alive in this wonderful era of comic book movies, especially in the wake of the recent Colorado tragedy. Those poor fans will never see another CBM, and we should always try to remember that. Think of those people when you go to see Iron Man 3, or Man of Steel, and count your blessings that you get to be there to enjoy it.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a good debate about which company or character is better, but let's try to do so with a higher level of decorum than what has been demonstrated as of late. Let's argue in a more civil manner, if and when possible, and try to disregard those who are trolling. Above all else, let's just strive to continually have fun with this. After all, that's ultimately what it's all about.

Eagerly awaiting Marvel's phase 2, as well as Man of Steel. Let's hope that we continue to enjoy CBM success for many years to come.

Peace, ya'll.

Thank you!! I tried to point out the absurdity of this awhile ago.

Man, you should have spoken up sooner. I agree with this 110%, and I'm definitely a DC man. My defense of the Dark Knight Trilogy might throw me into camp with the Nolanites. but I would never declare myself one, because, like you said, its absurd! As well as an insult to my actual comic knowledge.

I'd definitely like to see a new avenue of conversation before too long.

In my editorial about Man of Steel, I honestly failed to see that, even though it wasn't my intention, I was already throwing us back into the exact same debate. I was just voices my concerns, not judgements and inevitably it left open a way into the same old debate. Honestly, I think we need to just talk about each movie individually and stop comparing. My ability to do that has made it easier for me at least to enjoy each one. Hell, I'd never have a bad word to say toward Iron Man 2, or Green Lantern even.

Like you said, and a few others have said this before, we're all winners right now.

Your right. But I think for most people, no matter how much they claim to hate this, they actually LOVE to hate it. It's like watching a dumb reality show that you absolutely despise only because you enjoy talking about how much you hate it as you watch it. Love it or hate it, it's become part of the framework that makes the comment section such a guilty pleasure for many. A place for people to unleash their daily frustrations in the form of a consistent and ongoing argument. I agree that it's lame and gets annoying to read the same crap over and over. But every once in a while, when your in the right mood, it's kinda fun to just jump in the mosh pit of CBM nerds, lol. :)

@jjk: I did try to speak up sooner. I posted this originally in July, right after the whole TDKR shooting in Colorado, but someone posted a similar editorial a tiny bit sooner than I did, and even though mine got "printed", it got largely overlooked.
I re-posted it today due to the rise in the same kind of ridiculousness, which has been dubbed a "flame war". Anyhow, it's here now, and hopefully gets a little bit more attention this time around.
Thanks for the props, Brother. Keep on being awesome!

@LoudNoises: You are also right, in the sense that it is occasionally fun to fan the fire a bit. (I've been doing a little bit of it myself tonight.) But my main point is that, when it comes down to the bitter and seething hatred that some users throw at each other, it gets WAY too out of hand. Just read the article that was posted earlier today that had a poll about who was the best CBM director of 2012. It gets ridiculously over the top, and becomes outright nasty, for no good reason. THAT is what I'd like to see come to an end. Hence, the above article.

@Very true LoudNoises, very true.
@GhostZillaRider, i feel for ya! I posted an editorial along the lines of just "lets all be friends" awhile ago and it got about four comments. Four very positive comments, but that sucks. The decent editorials sometimes get overlooked when there are a plethora of more controversial ones.

GhostZillaRider - 12/19/2012, 8:35 PM
@jjk2814: I don't know about you, but in my case, I think that I got overlooked because I'm relatively unknown here. The powers that be may be hesitant to post an article by someone "newer" to front page, even if it has genuine merit, simply because said poster is "untested". I don't take it personally, I just wish that more people had seen it. I felt really good about how the article came out.
This time, I've had 3 times as many people read it as last time. I like to look at that as a win, even though one of those views seemed to be a silly little troll...
GhostZillaRider
GhostZillaRider - 12/19/2012, 8:39 PM
@CaptainCanti: Read the article. Towards the bottom of the fourth paragraph, I address that exact issue. Let me copy and paste since you seem to have missed it...

I wasn't targeting DC fans, nor was I labelling you Nolanites. Get over yourself, man, and take your trolling elsewhere.

@havoc9987: Yeah...Poor Ghost Rider. He's one of my alltime favorite heroes, and he's gotten a big flaming dildo up his you-know-what for both of his theatrical outings. Hopefully, Marvel can eventually re-acquire the rights and make a solid film for the poor flaming headed bastard...
As for GL, I'm not really familiar with him from the comics, but I know that I was really excited to see the movie, and pretty disappointed by the time I left the theater.
Here's hoping that eventually they all get the superstar treatment.

For those who may not have understood my previous comment, let me clarify by saying, what Alfred is saying to Bruce is funny. It would be just as entertaining if it were Jarvis saying it to Tony Stark. Funnier, actually, since Jarvis is a computer program. IT'S JUST PLAIN FUNNY!!!!!
If you can't appreciate the humor in it, I feel genuinely sorry for you.
I also found the previous pic of Ghost Rider and Green Lantern begging for a reboot to be a gas. @Havoc9987 has some fantastic giffs.

All I gotta say is WB/DC has been in partnership since 1969, their first major movie was Superman (1978), since then, it's been nothing but Batman, Superman, a bunch of imprints, and a failed Green Lantern. no Flash, no Wonder Man, no Aquaman, no Justice League.

Marvel Studios was made in 1993, their first live action movie Iron Man was out in 2008, then Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, and all of those were made within in a span of only 4 years. WB/DC had over 30 years of a head start against Marvel in the live action department and was only able to put out 3 of the major flagship heroes in the big screen spot light with 2 being successful?

Sorry, Marvel wins in that department. If WB/DC had the balls to take their own risks instead of waiting for Marvel to do it, maybe we would have more of a debate instead of Batman and the rest of Marvel. Just saying.

I'm a Marvel fan and a DC fan, but forget "Nolanites" I find that plain old DC fanboys are the most annoying CaptainCanti & Radiobox00 are the worst. Many of them are just blindly allegiant retards that hate on everything that isn't DC. I love both, and a ton of characters from both. But as a whole I prefer Marvel, but I don't wanna be included with the idiot fanboy crowd that are often called "Marvelites" anyway cool article.

The whole Marvelite Nolanite crap comes from obsessed dudes who can't take that people don't always like the same things. I'm a fan of both companies and most of the movies produced from either side I have no bias for either.
GhostZillaRider
GhostZillaRider - 12/20/2012, 8:10 AM
@imadick: How so? I felt that going into it looking at things from both sides of the argument was unbiased and objective. I also felt that not jumping on the bandwagon of my own personal preference (Marvel/The Avengers) and pointing out where the inherent flaws lie there also makes me unbiased. Perhaps you and I are using entirely different dictionaries when trying to define those words...
Also, I see no fail. Would you care to elaborate, or are you just trolling?
GhostZillaRider
GhostZillaRider - 12/20/2012, 8:13 AM
Perhaps it isn't unbiased because I'm biased towards getting along and having friendly debates about these subjects versus name calling and opinion bashing.

@GoILL: I'm pretty much a Marvel fan, however that isn't to say that I hate DC. I loved Batman Begins, as well as Tim Burton's take on the character. I really enjoyed the original Superman movie, and even enjoyed Superman Returns (for what it was). I'm definitely looking forward to Man of Steel, and would readily go see Justice League if it looked like it would be awesome. Like yourself, I enjoy them all. (When/if they're good, of course. Green Lantern still left me feeling a little violated.)

I can tell you, from my perspective, that this article is actually well thought out and well written. I took the time to look at both sides of this particular issue, and then laid everything out as honestly as possible. Not only do I NOT feel bad, but until you can generate an intelligent and thoughtful response, as well as impirical evidence that can back up and give validity to your statement, I'm going to feel pretty damn good about my contribution.
