Which characters should X Men First Class focus on? Good people of the Movie universe, look no further than The New Mutants

Its already been announced that there will be an X Men first class movie, but we dont know which characters will appear in that movie. Its highly unlikely that it will feature the comics first class team (Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman and Pheonix) and highly probable it will focus on the younger X Men that have already made an appearance in the previous movies (Shadocat, Collosus, Jubilee etc)...So far so boring if you ask me.

No my fellow geeks, i think this movie should be all about The New Mutants. They were the first X Men spin off comic created and written by Chris Claremont, and while the teams earliest adventures were nothing terribly exiting, they really hit ther stride with The Demon Bear Saga. This is the storyline i think the movie should follow, albeit with some significant changes.

The team went through many changes over the years but the characters widely considered to make up the best version of the team are as follows:

Cannonball (Samuel Guthrie), a mild-mannered Kentuckian and eventual co-leader, who became nigh-invulnerable when rocketing through the air.

Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair), a Scot who could transform into a wolf-like creature.

Mirage (Danielle Moonstar, also called Psyche and Moonstar), a Cheyenne and eventual co-leader , who could create visual empathic three-dimensional illusions.

Sunspot (Roberto da Costa), a Brazilian who gained superhuman strength fueled by sunlight and could store solar energy in his body to use his super strength during the night.

Magma (Amara Aquila/Alison Crestmere), a fiercely-tempered native of a secret Roman society in the Amazon who could control lava.

Warlock, an extraterrestrial of the techno-organic race known as the Technarchy.

And finally, one of my favorite ever comic characters..Magik (Illyanna Rasputin)..Collosus little sister and a Demon sorceress

The Demon Bear Saga focuses mainly on Mirage, who is tormented by visions of the demonic bear she believes to have murdered her parents. She confides in Magic, who knows something of the mystic arts but is unable (or unwilling) to ask for help from her teammates, who are still in training to master ther own abilities.
She pushes herself almost beyond her limits in the danger room, taking down images of bears with her bow and arrow until she can take no more and goes out into the snow, calling on the beast to reveal itself. Wolfbane, who shares a telepathic link with Mirage is awakened with images of her friend in trouble and calls the team together to investigate. They find Mirage in the snow, evicerated and near death. They get her to hospital but soon after the bear resumes its attack and the others must protect ther friend or die trying
What follows is a pretty straight forward team bonding story as each character must come to terms with ther initial mistrust of each other as well as ther own powers to defeat a powerfull enemy. But its the great characters that make it special, and i think it would make a gripping first installment of a possible franchise.

For this article ive taken over casting duties from Shaman! But please feel free to rubbish or praise my choices as you see fit

Wolfsbane was the easiest. Kelly McDonald really is something special. She has appeared in numerous British movies and more recently in No Country For Old Men and Choke. she also looks the part and is Scottish! What more can you ask for!

Next up is Ryan Kwanten as Cannonball. I dont know if any of you watch a show called True Blood but this guy is great at playing the slightly dim southern boy

For me Sunspot could only be Gael Garcia Bernal. He might be a bit old to play an 18 year old, but i think he could pull it off

If any of you have seen The New World you will know how good an actress Qoriana Kilcher is. I think she would be a great Mirage

Magiks next. I reckon Emilie De Raven from Lost would be perfect. She has the look and acting ability..even if your not a Lost fan check out her performance in a movie called Brick

Magma is supposed to be a very sexy and strong willed chick so i chose Scarlett Johannson..hey, why not right?;)

And lastly we have Warlock..i think you will agree he should be cgi!

So there you have it, i look forward to hearing you thoughts.

Those are good, but would also like to see Chamber in the line up. The Sun Spot pics looks a little like NightCrawler. Not being picky!

Well Chamber really only became a member of the second group..i thought the first movie should stick as close to the original lineup as possible..i love Chamber too though!

Sorry man but im not feeling any of these new mutants i think they should stick with the original ya i have no idea how they would explain it. Ima fan of X-men but they need to stop.

Angel couldnt be in it but Beast could cause in X3 him and Storm make up like they were old friends so that could work out. Ice Man could not be in it, too young in X1.So it would be Professor X,Jean Grey, Cyclops, Beast, and Storm which would be a crappy movie so either way new or old i dont think this movie will be good its like they screwed up the seires so they try making a bunch of prolouges that they think will fix it.... that wont work lol. but X-Men Orgins: Wolverine will work lol hopefully.

But this movie is not focusing on the original X men, its going to be about a new younger team..that exist in the same timeframe as the movie team. Its rumored that its going to be about the younger mutants from the movies. So Angel and Iceman would be in it! as well as Collosus, Kitty Pride, Jubilee and they will prob stick Artie and Leech in there too for kiddie appeal. Anyway i think that sounds quite crappy so thats why if ther going to make it i think they should make it right and stick to the comics..and thats the New Mutants!

Ohh see what i got from that article someone posted back awhile is that they are doing a prolouge of the x-men team but ur sayingthe movie will be continuing with the younger charcaters which isnt a bad idea but personally i dont think it would be any good totally my opinon it might do great but ... well i really dont have a arguement.

Off topic i wanna see a movie where all Marvel Characters will be in the same movie universe what ever little movies they have to make in between idk but i want a Avengers movie that kicks ass. k rorschach lol

TheShakeBake: The New Mutants were an actual comic and many of them became X-Men later. If I'm not mistaken, Cable first appeared in a New Mutants comic during X-tinction Agenda.

Rorschach: I can get with your Magma cast and Roberto De Costa(Sunspot), but the rest don't hit me to hard, but thats beause none of those characters other than Magma and Cannonball were ever that interesting to me, Sunspot only after he joined Hellfire Club many years later. That's not your fault though. If they are going to focus on a NEW younger group of X-Men for the movie, meaning not a prequel and not a focus on the characters X3 left us, it should be the current New X-Men. Hellion, Surge, Dust, Mercury, Elixir, Rockslide, and Gentle(Pixie, X-23, Anole, and Ink wouldn't be too interesting I feel)

Good Article!

to be honest i didnt put too much thought into casting Magma! I just went with the best body!..she is after all supposed to be of Greek origin so someone with a darker tone would be better.

Well it really depends on which audience the movie want to appeal the most too. I grew up reading the New Mutants as alot of older fans would have..im sure the younger fans would prefer a current team like the New Xmen. But characters like Magic, Wolfsbane etc are deeply rooted in the xmen mythology, and go on to affect alot of drastic changes in the X universe, so something like that is worth thinking about if more X Men movies are planned.

Woah, Roar that is a great idea for a movie. I would love for the execs to take a bit of creative liberty and change the bear to an actuall villain but yeah! Good concept. I'm actually glad you cast it yourself because i hate casting young actors simply because most of the best ones are unknowns and don't give us much experience to work with. Essentially, they would all have to audition.

So in regards to your casts, i like them but i don't love them. In fact, it would be impossible for me to love them LOL. I think they all incredibly fit the characters profiles in the looks department so that's a big kudos to you because it's not an easy task :))

And the only one i feel i would have to bring someone else to your attention would be for Cannonball because he's one of my favorite x-character ever. I think that to accompany your great cast you would need a star to put a little spotlight on it! And i feel that a team should have one leader, and a second in command, not two co-leaders. So in my opinion, Cannonball would be the lead! And one star we all know has got the looks even though he is older than he appears to be, he could still pull off a younger but mature role as leader. This actor HAS the experience as a young Southern lad as well! How's...Ryan Gosling as Cannonball for ya???

TheShakeBake- The article that was posted about "X-men: First Class" didn't indicate if it would be the X-men's origins having Beast, Storm, Angel, Jean and Cyclops or be the concept of "Generation X" but keeping the "graduating class" of the last x-men movie: Jubilee, Iceman, Colossus, Shadowcat, Rogue and weirdly enough Angel (since historically, he should be in the very origins of the x-men but they screwed up creativily his continuity in the movie). Roarschach's storyline has nothing to do with that article, it's a "What IF" storyline.

Well i was sort of torn between complete fantasy casting, and keeping it somwere within the realms of possibility. As for big names, i kinda figured Bernal and McDonald covered that!..but i take your point Guthrie should be a bigger name..and Gosling is a great actor.

And with the bear as a villain thing, it turns out that its a manifestation of Mirages Illusions..made flesh and blood and manipulated by Nastirh..sort of! The plot actually gets quite intricate so maybe your right about switching to a more conventional villain..it is an introduction to these characters after all.
Shaman
Shaman - 1/23/2009, 9:37 AM
Well actually, if a villain is "manipulating" Mirage's own illusions, it doesn't get more intricate than that! That would be KICK ASS SWEET!!!

RORSCHACH!DUDE! Sup! Anyway, I know I'm like forever and a day behind everything but I had to comment. Love the idea of doing the New Mutants in the "First Class" movie, since they can't do the original, nor can they do even the second or third lineup. BUT, The New Mutants would be great, as I see them as the "First Class" of the new age mutant breed. Young, undisciplined, untrsutworthy but EXTREMELY powerful in many ways. Plus, Illyana has also been one of my favorite mutants in Marvel history. But, I do need to point out; Wheres Doug?! Ya can't have the new mutants without Doug, even though he died because he SUCKED ASS; He still needs to be there. Even if it's just to die by the hands/paws of the Demon Bear, ya can't forget about "Poor Dead Doug".

Anyway, I hope all is going well for you and yours. I'll be floating around sporadically from time to time.

Ion, man its good to hear from you...theres some posts that are seriously missing a bit of green on these forums!

Yeah i really should have included poor, awful, pathetic dead Douglas Ramsey! lol, ah he could be played by Macauley Culkin or something
Shaman
Shaman - 1/29/2009, 10:15 AM
LOL, your are soo right Roar, these posts do lack ION's green :))

And i'm not too familiar with the new mutants but i take it he is as important as Kenny was on South park? Even though he's meant to die, where would Galaxy Quest be without "Crewman number 6" LOL
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/29/2009, 10:37 AM
Well his "superpower" is to be great at understanding things..lol, like he can dechypher (Cypher is his codename) any code or work out any math problem and understand any language. He always felt useless but ends up sacrificing himself to save the rest of tghe team..so he came in handy for something! It was actually just a LITTLE bit sad because poor Warlock was his best buddy and cried alot:(
Shaman
Shaman - 1/29/2009, 1:42 PM
Ah. Well to me, warlock's the one i'm not connecting to really. I think i saw him once on the animated series of x-men right? IMO, he was too weird to have him stick around. He should have sacrificed himself instead of Cypher and then have Cypher juggling with the idea of offing himself or something feeling totally alone now. That, to me, would have made more sense, I dunno about you guys?
IonParallax
IonParallax - 1/29/2009, 9:10 PM
Well, the Green is slowly filtering it's way back into the fold. I hope everyone enjoys it. I know I sure do. Hehe.

As for Doug and Warlock...OK, Yea Cypher was completely useless except he could understand things. WHOOP dee doo. Given enough time I can understand pretty much anything you put in front of me, I wouldn't even have considered that a mutant ability. So, he's a sevant in the realm of understanding. Good for him.

Warlock - HELLO! Not even a freakin' mutant, a Technarchy with the Phalanx syndrome, or disorder, or whatever you want to call it now. Yes, he was in the Phalanx Covenant episodes of X-Men the Animated Series in the 90's. Since I was never really a fan of Warlock and didn't understand how he got a place in a mutant academy, I never liked him. I could never find anyone to compare him to until a few minutes ago when I was reading the Shatner to Pine deal and it hit me:
JAR JAR BINKS! Warlock is the freakin' Jar jar Binks of the X-Men comics!! I dare you to find a better comparison. I double DOG dare you.
6 days boys and girls. Hooray for anticipation, right?

MarkCassidy - 1/30/2009, 9:22 AM
I loved Warlock! But then when i first read the New Mutants i was 12 so maybe he is a bit kiddy..but please dont ever compare any comic book character to he who will not be named!

We need to see Magik in a movie..even if its not the New Mutants..work her into another X Men pic. Shes 10 times more interesting and layered than Jubilee, Shadowcat, and of those X brats they are toying with useing. I believe she has been ressurected in the comics..im not sure which comic..does anyone have any more info on that?
Shaman
Shaman - 1/30/2009, 9:22 AM
Yeah, i can't find a better one than jar jar binks. Both characters should be mutilated. So charge back your ring and come back when you can ION :) As for Magic use Roar, why not take creative liberty and have the scarlet witch be a part of the new mutants? You know, Magneto's daughter part of the x-men... could piss off a teen's over controling father.

Oooh you were talking about "Magik" as the character... well then forget i said anything about it...but then, why is she on debate right now Roar? I think everybody was fine with her...right?
IonParallax
IonParallax - 1/30/2009, 12:45 PM
Slowly but surely the charge is being complete. Sorry dude, I know he's an absolute abomination of a character, but that's now and forever what I will compare Warlock to, until someone hits me on the head and I get amnesia or something. I will not speak of it again.

As for Magick; Yes Ror, she was just recently brought back (not that she ever really died. They say the Legacy Virus claimed her, but her soul has been in Limbo forever.) in the "X-Infernus" mini which I do believe is still on sale now. I know the first issue garnered so much hype they completely sold out and had to do a second run of the first issue. I've read some reviews and it seems sweet. She was always a great character. The whole Rasputin family has garnered some good characters altogether. 3 total if I'm not mistaken. They're like the Guthries of Russia. Except the Guthries have like 6 freakin' Mutant children in their lineup, one I do believe is considered 1 of the last 2 surviving Externals (Immortals who each represent a certain human aspect - Cannonball being Hope if I remember correctly. Selene being the other) one died (the Angel kid) and then there's Husk - Paige Guthrie, who I always thought had a very odd ability, but I can see how it's rather useful, still an oddball though if you ask me. There's obviously something quirky about a Kentuckian family with 6 or 7 kids and at least half of them are freakin' Mutants.
