Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 2nd phase started with Iron Man 3. It had a twist the no one expected but then it looked kind of familiar. Ever wondered how?

During Avengers when Loki attacked Earth it was Thanos who was the actual puppet master and reason for everything that happened on Earth. Then let's come to Iron Man 3 where Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin character turned out to be a theater artist and it was Killian who was playing the actual game.

Something common in both these movies is that while events unfold there is always someone running the show hidden from the world.

So how MCU’s phase 2 upcoming movies related to this theme.

If you have read Thor: The Dark World synopsis then you must remember about a mysterious shadowy figure that walks in the dark. While Malekith is the man running the show then who is the shadowy figure? Is he Surtur or Thanos himself, that will be seen but overall the theme signals that is going to be familiar.

Now coming to Captain America: The Winter soldier we all know by now that it is going to be based on Winter Soldier as well as Nick Fury vs SHIELD arc that clearly signifies this theme. Who is Winter Soldier, who is he and Crossbones working for? There are so many cast members whose roles are still not revealed, so what if Red Skull is back or World Council is infiltrated by HYDRA. This movie is going to give a huge reveal IMO.

I don’t think Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be an origin movie. This movie has a lot of villains, collector is here, rumors about Korvac and Ronan have surfaced along with a female villain and because this movie will lead straight into Avengers 2 so the big reveal I guess will happen in the end.

MCU has decided a theme for Phase 2 movies and this is something that is going to make the movies interesting.

I honestly think Robert Redford's character is actually the Red Skull.

@marvelstudios I REALLY hope so. Redford is a great actor, and since Weaving has no intention of coming back, he'd be a great successor.

I hope Redford is not Skull (OK, that would be awesome), but russian/old-soviet general, and maybe it will lead to Inhumans :D

"The Man Behind the Man"
When a character previously positioned as a Big Bad is revealed in fact to be either a Disc One Final Boss or The Dragon, The Man Behind The Man shows his (or her, or its) face.

The Man has deeper problems, deeper motives and so much power that the heroes will have to go through another round of dungeon diving just to stand a chance. When he reveals his reasons for being evil, expect the theme of the plot to unfold quickly and dramatically.

Iron Man - Raza/Obidiah Stane
the Incredible Hulk - General Ross/Blonsky (sort of)
Iron Man 2 - Justin Hammer/Ivan Vanko
Thor - King Laufey/Loki
Captain America: the First Avenger - Red Skull (yeah, no)
the Avengers - Loki/Thanos
Iron Man 3 - the Mandarin/Aldrich Killian

It's actually a very stable plan. Those that survive can also ascend to this later on.

@Tainted87 - Captain America: the First Avenger - at the begining of the movie we know enemies just as 3 Reich (Natzi)... On first CA mission we have "big reveal" - Red Skull speach on the bridge in burning factory.

Another theme in the last couple of Phase 1 movies was a team setting. Take a look:

IM2: Iron Man, War Machine, Black Widow
Thor: The Warriors Three, Lady Sif and Thor.
CA: TFA: Howling Commandos, Cap and Bucky

Now if you look at the phase 2 movies, the same thing is happening with villains.

IM3: Killian, Savin (Coldblood), Trevor (a bit)
T:TDW: Malekith, Kurse and unrevealed character (hopefully Sutur)
CA: TWS: Batroc, WS, Crossbones, Redford's character (I think he's Aleksander Lukin, Russian guy with Red Skull in his mind)

Way I see it, they'll probably bring back a few of those guys plus the Leader and Abomination.
If the whole "No I'm in charge!" goes on too long, this'll just be predictable and Marvel movies will fall into a rut. I like the concept you'ere thinking of, I just hope the trend doesn't ovrstay its welcome.

Robert Redford is probably not Red Skull. It'd be funny of he was the white version of Nick Fury from the 616 universe
