Could a Dr. Doom solo film work?

The Fantastic Four have proven to be unsuccessful in film. Should Fox consider making Dr. Doom a protagonist?

I understand that Fox is already developing a new Fantastic Four film with Dr. Doom as a villain, but I am unsure if it will work.  The Fantastic Four has a poor history within film, and I do not see how making the team teenagers/young adults will work unless they drastically change the backstory.  Dr. Doom might be Marvel’s most recognizable villain (Loki and Magneto could argued) and has some anti-heroic qualities.  Throughout his history within comics, he has always been a man of his word and often aided the superheroes.  Furthermore, he many of his decisions are made for the good of his Latverian people.  I believe if the Fantastic Four reboot fails, Fox should consider making Dr. Doom a protagonist and highlight his backstory independent of the Fantastic Four.

I have no idea what the story in the reboot will be.
with that said, I hope Doom isn't used in the first FF, at least not as a villain.

Have him be on the ship and he gets injured during the cosmic explosion, then when they come back to earth, he goes back to Latveria for a couple months to heal up. Have it set up the backstory for him wanting to be involved in the politics of his country. then use him for a 2nd movie.

then probably Galactus (the non-cloud version) as the villain for the 3rd movie.

as for a solo movie, im sure theres some political thriller type story that you can make with latveria involved.

IIRC, there was a Mephisto story involving Doom's mother as well?

The only way this would work is if they followed the "Books of Doom" story. It was a very well done origin story from his childhood all the way up to him taking over Latveria. It also paints a sympathetic picture of him. You can see why he turned out the way he did. Its a very good run. Anyone that hasn't read it should definitely pick it up.

I've always said I'd like to see a movie centered on supervillains. I guess ONE bad guy would be alright. The trouble is - Doom is a character who reaches so much further than the Fantastic Four, so really anything that Fox puts on film would be a serious limitation. Who would Doom interact with, besides the Fantastic Four?

However, limitations aren't always bad. No limitations, no advancement. No advancement, culture stagnates. Works other way too: advancement before culture is ready - disastrous!

And no, children, painting him in a sympathetic light would be a BAD idea. This is Doctor DOOM: the ultimate Marvel villain.

Yeah, but Dr. Doom IS a sympathetic villain. He grew up oppressed by the government in Latveria...his mother was murdered for practicing witchcraft. His father died protecting Victor while fleeing from the Latverian government. His father froze to death in the snow and his body froze in place while he was holding Victor to keep him warm. Victor couldn't get out because his father's dead arms were frozen around him, lol.

Sure, he's definitely an asshole and completely arrogant in believing that he is the smartest man to ever live. But you can see why he grew up to be why he is the way he is.

This is the way it is in the comics, yet he's still considered Marvel's greatest villain. I fail to see how that would change anything in a film as long as as Doom is portrayed as being the great villain he is in the comics.

You're basing that off of what? Ed Brubaker's limited series? A retcon/expansion on his origin? 50 years and one story makes him entirely sympathetic?

You might as well consider Hannibal Rising definitive because Thomas Harris decided to give Hannibal a victimized origin story.....AFTER all has been said and done.

I'll grant you that he's entitled to be misunderstood, but once you start down the "one bad day" road, you might as well make it an interstate for every supervillain. It might humanize the character to you, but it detracts from how larger than life he's supposed to be.

Darth Vader was awesome until the prequel trilogy....

I'm basing it on the fact that Books of Doom is canon. Also on the fact that it has no effect whatsoever on Doom as a character. After that story was released, its not like he suddenly became pussified. He's just as evil as he ever was.

Also, the things that were explored in Books of Doom were already things that were set up and canon long before the story was ever written. Books of Doom just shows it in detail.

It was already known that Doom tries to save his dead mother from hell once a year. It was already known that he was oppressed by the Latverian government as a kid. It was already known that he went to college with Reed Richards. None of that was new, or Brubaker's decisions.

You clearly still consider Doom to be the greatest Marvel villain ever created, and I can't say I disagree with you. But the things you are mentioning happened, or were at least mentioned in the comics long before Books of Doom came along.

Also, the reason Vader seems like less of a badass after the prequels is because the prequels basically changed Vader's entire reasoning for being a Sith as well as his motivations.

Doom has always had the same reasons for doing what he does. He wants to take over the world. Plain and simple.

That used to be how everyone saw Vader, but after the prequels we find out that he went to the dark side because he was a complete moron, and that he's basically plotting against Palpatine the entire time, which is BS.

There's a big difference in those two characters.

To add on to that, every villain THINKS they are right. No villain is saying, "Hey, I'm a dick and I'm doing this evil deed just to be evil and wrong." The only villain I can really think of that is like that is Joker.

Every other villain feels justified in their actions. Even people as evil as Red Skull. He honestly believes in what he's doing and thinks he is right. So trying to show people WHY these villains believe they are right, or what happened to them to make them think this way, should not be considered a bad thing.
