2011's Conan the Barbarian opened with a thud, only pulling in $16.6 million domestically in it's first ten days, and a paltry $5.5 million opening weekend overseas. The Lionsgate film cost around $70 million to produce and finished a few million shy of $50 million at the worldwide box office when it's run came to an end. The film was also panned by fans of Robert E. Howard's novels and Arnold Schwarzenegger's previous two Conan films. Critics were unkind to the film as well, it only garnered a 23% aggregate approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Who is to blame? Well, many will point their fingers at the screenwriters, but which one or two is deserves the scolding when their are four credited to the film? Screenwriters Thomas Dean Donnelly, Joshua Oppenheimer, Andrew Lobel, and Sean Hood all made contributions to the script.

Perhaps this is why we haven't heard anything about Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer's script for Doctor Strange, which they turned over to Marvel about a year ago.

Q: Your take on “Conan” nailed the savagery and made him the best take on the character. How did you feel about the rest of the film living up to your performance?

Momoa: I was a comic book fan and a huge admirer of Frank Frazetta and when he died during our filming, it was so sad because I wanted him to see it and say “Wow, that’s my Conan!” Just looking at his paintings, I wanted to put that up on the screen. I absolutely remember seeing that one where Conan's standing on a pile of skulls and it’s seared into your memory and a I felt like Marcus Nispel is a pretty visually amazing director. There’s just a lot of things that came into it and sometimes the script just wasn’t there. I just wanted take a stab at doing Conan and it’s out of your control, you can only do so much I feel like I bled over, and over and over to do the best I could. I feel like we represented him very well. The movie sometimes, it fell short you can only show up as an actor and be the best you can be.

Q: So you’re just finishing up “Bullet to the Head” with Walter Hill. We’ve only heard little snippets about it but can you tell us about that?

Momoa: That was an honor, it was just amazing and I mean Stallone is just a legend. It was a dream to work with him and my fight scenes with Stallone, it was like you just stop and pinch yourself and say “I can’t believe I’m fighting Rocky right now!” I watched “Rocky” when I was getting ready for Conan. It was fun and I got to play a ‘Don’ for the first time. I’m excited for people to see it.

Bullet to the Head was directed by Walter Hill based upon Alexis Nolent's French graphic novel Du Plomb Dans La Tete. The film will star Sylvester Stallone, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Sarah Shahi, Jason Momoa, Sung Kang, and Christian Slater. It hits theaters February 1st, 2013.

Momoa was great and still has a great look. Too bad they couldn't overcome the script and the horrible editing job.

The acting was pitiful, especially Ron Pearlman, who you think would have shown the rest of them a thing or two

No amount of good acting could have saved that movie. First 10 or 15 minutes were awesome, then it just fell to shit fast. Seemed like an amatuer effort by the director and the writers.

it flopped because you're an unknown actor, when you say Conan the people think of Arnold, nuff said.

Shame is right. I enjoyed the movie and this version of Conan far more than Arnold's (which I just consider fun). It was definitely more like a comic (this past version)

I'll agree he was the best part about that movie and would love to see him play Kratos.

I personally thought that movie was alright (Not fantastic, but pretty good). Jason Momoa did a great job. And Stephen Lang was great as the villain.

Yeah, the writing was absolute shit. That's true. It was SUCH trash that if you stood over Robert E. Howard's grave you could probably hear the rattling noise as he spins in his coffin, and he was anything but a sensitive artiste.

...which still doesn't entirely excuse the director and producers for either not noticing what a complete load of steaming shit they had for a script, or at least not improving it with the force of the Director Smash. Now Nispel doesn't have the clout of Ridley Scott to completely rewrite a script he finds lacking, but I refuse to believe he couldn't have made it a bit better than THAT if he had wanted to do so.

he kinda has a point. The plot and the dialogue were the weak points I thought. That's not his fault.

Actually I don't remember having a problem with any of the acting.

It failed because the original is a hard act to follow. This movie seemed much more light hearted in it's delivery, so it was harder for me to take it seriously. With the first one, when his mother is beheaded by Doom you knew right then that this film meant business. It was not [frick]ing around. With this new one, once I saw the 8 year old behead a hole crew of savages I kinda felt like "there's no real threat here". It more or less lost me at that point and never really pulled me back in. I've only seen it once. I've watched the original at least 3 times a year since it came out. There you have it.

@yingyangpalms agreed. Momoa needs to cook a little longer. Plus not using the original soundtrack was a HUGE blow it move on the part of this film. That shit is like audio steroids. Excalibur was badass as well. Helen Mirren gave me one of my first boners.

I thought he was a great Conan. The story was just a mess.

@Dionysios He explained this on TBS's Conan O'Brien show: he asked his friend to punch him in the face, and he accidentally broke his nose. I forgot why Jason Momoa asked his friend to do that though.

The studio had their hands in the game too. Sure about that.

They wanted to make easy money with easy concept.

The style and Momoa was the best part of the film.

Momoa really impressed me as the cimmerian!

But the movie is bad, real bad! The first part with young Conan and his father is pure shite - that part, "I love you, Conan, bla, bla, bla" was terrible!

Ande the rest of the movie was visually good but the story gone down the hill.

You knew the film was grade A shit from the trailers, but I went on netflix to see how bad it was anyway. I don't think I lasted 20 minutes. I was just as bored as Ron Pearlman who basically come on set, got his check, then went home.

I blame the director. There were so many cheesy shots in the movie that was suppose to be epic that made me laugh.

Examples off the top of my head....
Conan's birth, Ron Pearlman holds up baby = cheesy
and a couple similar shots like that where young Conan holds up sword = cheesy

Poor direction and production, felt like Xena or Hercules TV show.

Should've been more like Game of Thrones or LOTR maybe.
