We seem to be hearing quite a bit from Conan the Barbarian star Jason Momoa these days. He has been promoting Game of Thrones fairly steady. Below is the latest the actor had to say about Conan from DigitalSpy.

"A lot of people are like, 'What's it like being in the shoes of Arnold?' but it's not a remake of the 1982 film. There's just such a bountiful amount of Robert E. Howard stories. So it's taking a couple of Robert E. Howard stories, the same legendary character and throwing him through that."

"Fans of Arnie, unfortunately I'm not Arnie and I'm not going to try to do anything remotely like Arnold. I think what I tried to model myself after was the things I was inspired by, the stories and Frank Frazetta.

"Both my parents are painters and I grew up doing that and being an artist and I saw the Frank Frazetta paintings when I was a boy. They're just badass, you know what I mean? He's got a chick on his leg and he's standing on a bunch of skulls with this sword and he's just ripped. It's cool! I'm a big kid inside."

Conan The Barbarian directed by Marcus Nispel and starring Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan, Ron Perlman, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang and Saïd Taghmaoui is slated for release this August.

I LOVED Frazetta's artwork! One of my favs as a kid and an adult!

His Conan work is awe inspiring!
Liefield actually had the balls to compare his crap to Frazetta.

I think the first sex scene I ever saw was in a book of Frazetta drawings my dad had.

The guy has a point! I liked what he said... And yes, the Frazetta's paintings are the best!!! Conan's finest artwork, besides John Buscema.

Yeah, watch the documentary called "PAINTING WITH FIRE" about Frazetta. It's a retrospective and great interviews with Ralph Bakshi and even his mother. If that doesn't get you pumped for the new Conan movie I don't know what will.

Even if he's never seen the first film, never heard of Conan, only wants the part for the money and to lead him to his next big role, BUT plays the part really well... Isn't that enough?

He, like so many of us fans, appreciate the coolness of Conan artwork. Cool! That being said Momoa continues to do a crappy job at endearing himself to anyone who happened to like the old Conan flicks. Of course people are going to compare the two. It would be dumb to think anything otherwise. We haven't seen a Conan movie for a couple of decades! So just go with it dude and try to ingratiate yourself to the existing fan base. I'd like to like this guy but I don't get his passive aggressive vibe!

Wow I think some people just want to hate on the movie, he didn't say anything except that he isn't Arnold and that this isn't a re-make. Basically this is a whole new movie about Conan, no one asked Christian Bale how it felt to be in Michael Keaton's shoes when he took over as Batman nor should they. Arnold's movies were OK but the man couldn't act and had very little in dialogue for him hopefully this will be changed in this movie since Momoa can act and he seems to have a respect for the material.

@ MadMonk.

Thank God he has never seen an old Donner Superman movie. They are terrible. They don’t hold up today. What’s more if you stack them up against movies that came out around the same time…they are horrible by comparison. Jaws, Star Wars, Raiders of the lost ark. Those were good films of that era. People view those old movies with rose tinted glasses. Those old Conan and Superman movies weren’t very good, but people loved them and clung to them because it was all they had for live action, Superman and Conan.

If someone actually comes along and makes a decent Superman or Conan movie it will really shine the light of truth on what icky films the old ones were.

Both 80’s franchises did have really good sound tracks though.

Bryanferryfan: I beleive I've seen that documentary. Is that the one where he explains how he taught himself how to draw and paint with his left hand after his stroke left his right one useless?
PapaEmeritus
PapaEmeritus - 4/19/2011, 7:42 PM
@LordHuck, sorry man, but you're completely WRONG! Even if you questioned the technique a visual effects, you're wrong. Those movies are just great... Conan the Barbarian has great photography, best epic soudtrack EVER by Basil Poledouris, and a very profound and complex hero journey, with different levels of interpretations and some of the best movie villains of all time portrayed by James Earl Jones. Donner's Super is a classic even nowadays, the perfect embodiment of Clark Kent by Chris Reeves , I think for EVER. Just epic. You don't know what you're talking about.

NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 4/19/2011, 7:53 PM
Ironic. Momoa seems to be the main person concerned with Arnold comparisons. He keeps talking about it even when no one is asking. And his scenarios about being asked about Arnold sounds fictitious. I think he's painting a picture so that he can rant about his film not being Arnolds film. He's apparently worried about the classic casting a shadow. I don't think the movie is going to be good, but I don't think the previous film should be a deciding factor. They are different movies made in different times.

Ceejay - 4/19/2011, 7:59 PM
He can say whatever he likes about Arnold and those terrible old Conan films. The idiots who think they're definitive or who holds Arnold up as some great actor deserves all the ridicule they get. Only thing good about the old Conan movie is the music, I wish Jason's version all the luck and hopefully will make ten times more money than Arnold's flop!

Ceejay Yeah, I don't think Conan the Barbarion can be considered a "flop". Classic, maybe, but "flop"; no. You seem pretty angry about the original film. Are you not mad that after all this time, the only thing you got from the new film is a few photos and a blank screen with smoke as a trailer? I'd be a little annoyed. You seem like a pretty loyal fan. You deserve better.

@ OneEyedWillie

You’re full of shit. The Donner Superman Movies were NEVER very good. Superman I and Superman II being the only ones that were even watchable. 3 & 4 were complete tripe. And you know it.

Don’t try to pull from your nostalgia clouded memory. Actually go and watch one of them again with a fresh and neutral eye.

Superman 4 came out in 1987. You know what else came out in 1987? Lethal weapon, The princess Bride, Robocop, The Untouchables, Wall Street, Raising Arizona, and [frick]ing. PREDATOR!!! Return of the Jedi came out in 1983. They knew what a good fantasy Action movie looked like! And they still gave us Superman 4. [frick] Superman 4
Superman repaired destroyed sections of the Great Wall of China in seconds with a blue beam from his eyeballs!! Why? That power has never been used before or since in any comic.

Superman 1-4 don’t hold up now and they didn’t hold up in their own time either. You wanna Know what good films from that period are? Here you go.

The Deer Hunter
Star Wars
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Taxi Driver
Rocky
One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Jaws
Apocalypse Now
Alien
Mad Max
The Empire Strikes Back
Raging Bull
The Shining
Raiders of the lost Ark
Blade Runner
E.T.
Poltergeist
The Thing
Return of the Jedi

Conan the Barbarian: Conan the Destroyer: These films were the best of a bad lot of “sword sandals and sorcery” genre.

They were fine Genre films but they were barely Conan films at all.

No one has ever Made a GREAT Conan Movie.

Remember when people thought they had seen a good Fantasy movie before? And then Lord of the Rings came out and immediately made every other fantasy film look like crap by comparison?

That is what we are waiting for now. The Jason Mamoa Conan people have seen LOTR and they have seen The Scorpion King. Therefore they know what to do and what NOT to do. And whats more they have tons of comics and short stories to pull from as source material. If they [frick] it up it’s all on them because there is everything but a blueprint etched in flaming stone to show them the way to an amazing film

PS One Eyed Willie. Go throw a cellophane “S” up your own ass and die.

@LordHuck, blah, blah, blah... to say what? Nothing. You sir, knows nothing! I wonder how do you stand on your feet at morning? Comparing LOTR with the first Conan? Bah! Childish shallow comparision... and I spending my time talking to you. Go learn something, than you can go to the foruns, kid.

Neo@ Umm, it is a teaser trailer, not an actual feature trailer. A teaser trailer shouldn't show much and definitely this one shows more than other teaser trailers have shown for various films. I find it ironic you seem angry over a teaser trailer. ;-)
DieSwartSlak
DieSwartSlak - 4/20/2011, 12:48 AM
I don't know what everyone's problem is. It's not like anyone actually liked the Arnold movies. And he is right. It's based on the books, which were actually quite good, in relation to the movies, which were actually quite ridiculous. And by the way, the only reason he is saying these things is because fanboys of the movie (possibly one) are attacking him... I think he is going to be brilliant. But that's just me.
wildstar13
wildstar13 - 4/20/2011, 1:20 AM
Donner only directed first Superman film before he got fired. Other Superman films were directed by Richard Lester and sidney Furie. 3 and 4 were terrible but first Superman movie is classic.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 4/20/2011, 2:04 AM
Ranger14 Yeah, teaser trailers are not full trailers. You're very smart. However, teaser trailers do display content. The Conan 3D teaser is mostly a voice-over and smoke. There's not a single shot of actual film footage. Or, I hope that wasn't actual film footage lol.

"I find it ironic you seem angry over a teaser trailer."-Ranger14

That statement makes no sense.

@ LordHuck - Wow guy now I know your full of shit nor any idea of the movie genere. Yes everyone has there opinions of movies and favorites.
But you obviously don't have a clue what your typing about. If you were a real fan of any CBM flick you would have know Donner never made Superman 4 & 5 and got screwed over by his producers in Superman 2. They hired another director to add and finish Superman 2 the theatrical run, don't believe watch Superman Donner's Cut way better.

As for you so called "Swords and Sorcery" back during that era a whole bunch a movies came out Arnie's above all was the best there was during that time.
Check out:
Beastmaster - good popcorn flick
Deathstalker
Excalibur - granted not bararian but same genera
Dragonslayer
Legend
Krull
Hercules - Lou Ferrigno one
Clash of The Titans - original

Compare Arnie's Conan with these flicks and say it was uttter shit I dare you. And trust me there was a shit load of Sowrds and Sorcery then like good and bad flims running amuck. You just haven't seen them yet.
And comparing movies with today standards and special F/Xs of yester year. Get off your high horse if it wasn't for most of these as you call it bad movies they wouldn't be re-making or re-booting most of these movies.
Granted were always willing to watch new advanced sword and sorcery with new tech but you can't beat story line for fancy icying.
It's like if they remade Casablanca or Gone with the Wind they will never be as great as the original. They will always be remebered as the great classics.
And to me Arnie's Conan will always be a great classic.
Momoa will have to wait and see if his ever becomes a classic if not forgotten under the 5 dollar bin logo.

@ LordHuck- you are so full of shite. what age are you?
you dont seem to know your arse from your elbow when it comes to superman movies. Richard donner had nothing to do with superman III and IV and was replaced by richard lester when he refused to finish the second film (having shot around 70% of footage during superman the movie's production) if pierre spengler returned as producer. Lester re shot some footage and added new scenes inc the eifel tower scene and the showdown in metropolis wit zod. He also re shot and added in footage for the climactic battle in the fortress of solitude, including the infamous cellofane "s". So there you go. If you need educating in any other aspects of life dont hesitate to contact me. you really are stupid u little funck!!!!!
