Omnilab Media and The Jim Henson Company are teaming to produce the sequel to 1982's original "Dark Crystal" film called "Power of the Dark Crystal." It will be directed by the Spierig Brothers ("Daybreakers," "Undead") and is written by Craig Pearce ("Moulin Rouge!," "Strictly Ballroom").

The original film features a Crystal which maintains equilibrium in a mythical kingdom. When the Crystal is broken, the evil Skeksis take over, killing off the good-guy Gelflings and enslaving everyone else. Jen and Kira, the surviving Gelflings, join forces to "heal" the precious Dark Crystal and restore order to their world.

A year after the film's release, in 1983, Marvel Comics printed a comic book adaptation of the movie.

The story of the sequel will be set centuries later when the world has once again fallen into darkness. A mysterious girl, who is made of fire, teams with a Gelfling outcast to steal a shard of the Crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet.

It will be shot in stereoscopic 3D and include elements of live action and traditional puppetry combined with visual and special effects.

Brian Froud will once again serve as conceptual designer of the film while the CGI elements will be handled by Iloura ("Where the Wild Things Are," "The Pacific").

Filming kicks off later this year for release in 2011.

Great movie, but scary for kids. Remember those giant beatles? Remember how that Skeksis was stripped? Remember those muppets stared at the crystal until their eyes popped out? Definitely not a kids movie.
It's a dark movie, like The Secret of NIMH.

It boggles my mind when I see the cover of a Secret of NIMH DVD in a store. It looks like a day at the beach. But then the kids take it home and find out Mrs. Frisby gets it in the end.

@HelaGood I understand, but I thought kids had short attention spans, or maybe that's just with today's kids.
