Henry Cavill Says His Upcoming HIGHLANDER Reboot At Lionsgate Dives Deeper Into The Lore

Henry Cavill, former Superman and Witcher star, will headline the upcoming Highlander revival for Lionsgate, which will be helmed by John Wick's Chad Stahelski.

There can only be one!

With Henry Cavill starring in a remake of the beloved 1986 movie starring Christopher Lambert as the legendary swordsman Connor MacLeod, Lionsgate has great hopes for the Highlander franchise.

Three theatrical sequels, a popular TV series starring Adrian Paul, an animated children's cartoon, and a TV movie that acted as a bridge between Lambert's films and Paul's TV series were all inspired by 1986 movie.

Speaking cautiously, Cavill revealed that he is a huge admirer of the original film and TV series and that he is excited to delve into the franchise's lore during his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote his next role in the spy-comedy thriller Argylle.

Said Cavill, "I’m going to have to answer that very carefully. I was, am, a Highlander fan. They were great fun movies. Obviously, I watched them when I was a lot younger, and since rewatched. But also the TV show. I really enjoyed the lore behind it. That sense of a tragic warrior, with more of a story to tell than just a cool guy with a cool sword doing cool things. And this goes even deeper into that."

Cavill was hesitant to divulge any material before Lionsgate was ready to do so because it is unknown if he will portray Connor, the main character in the TV series Duncan MacLeod, or a completely new clan MacLeod member.

Earlier in 2023, Stahelski teased, "I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline ‘there can only be one’, you can’t just kill everybody the first time."

He went on to state, "Our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that. But we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property."

"We're trying to do a bit of a prequel setup to The Gathering. So, we have room to grow the property. We have ideas for days about how to make the coolest characters and to make that an epic TV show. I just think that's a rich, rich mythology."

Highlander follows a fictional story that asserts that immortals exist, hidden within normal society. They must hunt and kill other immortals by beheading them in a contest known as The Gathering, which will see the last-standing immortal gain ultimate power.

While the origins of the contest is never explicitly explained, the franchise generally takes the stance that immortals have existed since the dawn of time and that the contest between them must only abide by three hard rules:

  1. combat on Holy Ground is forbidden
  2. combat must be one on one
  3.  in the end, there can only be one.

Cavill recently left his role as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's The Witcher and was also informed by Warner Bros. Discovery that he would not be returning as Superman after the decision was made to reboot the DC Cinematic Universe.

He could definitely use a victory, and fans of the actor are hoping that Stahleski's action background combined with Cavill's sword abilities gleaned from his time as Geralt will result in a successful production.

@Feralwookiee - Cavill and Stahelski signed on fairly recently. I think it's definitely moving forward unless one of them drops out.

@MarkJulian - This has been in developmental hell for over 17 years and Cavill signed on in 2022! 😳

I put this one in the same category with The Crow reboot: I'll believe it when I see it.

@bobevanz - I prefer the TV show to the movies, personally.

@bobevanz - The first one is a helluva lot better than the sequels.

Will need a damn good actor as the villain to help carry this

This could be really cool if they can get the lore right. One of the big problems with the films is how little sense they made at times. The shows tried to make it work but struggled as well.

I wish him luck for doing Highlander, but nothing will change after what WB Discovery did to him as Superman

@cyclopstb - Every movie with his Superman underperformed. How many chances does one guy can reasonably get?

The idea of Highlander has always been cooler than any of the movies or shows. I can see this being a really cool franchise under the correct team.

The original Highlander is one of my personal all-time favorite movies. Maybe even the favorite. What makes it great is the atmosphere, visual style, soundtrack (not just the Queen songs, but the original score by Michael Kamen), charismatic actors and some of the smaller emotional moments (like the "Who Wants to Live Forever" montage).

I have zero faith in this remake. Putting aside that Highlander has a terrible track-record as a franchise (although, the third movie and the direct-to-dvd anime spin-off were watchable), they got a director who can film cool action, but not much else, and a lead star whose acting range starts and ends with "can hold a grumpy face, while performing stunts". I'm sure they will license some of the Queen songs for nostalgia points, but I somehow doubt the soundtrack as a whole will be anything to write home about either.

And they have already talked about how they can't tell a complete story, since that would make sequels impossible,so they are even falling to the classic Hollywood pitfall of thinking about a potential franchise more than making a best possible movie.

This is one of the few properties that I think needs a reboot.

Highlander as a movie hasn't aged well, it's a very dated movie all around and doesn't hold up imo. With the right team behind this I think a Highlander reboot could be something great.

So two of the main queries that I have are one: he cannot use a broadsword except for at the beginning. He has got to use the katana that he gets from Ramirez. Two: who is going to play the Kurgan? I thought about this for a long time and the only one I can see that can play the kind of savage that can pull it off convincingly in my mind would be Jason Momoa. Time will tell.
